Puerto Rico - Thousands Evacuated after oil fire
October 25, 2009
-  About 2,000 people were evacuated after explosion and fire at the Caribbean Petroleum Corp fuel-storage site west of San Juan.
A few were slightly injured by the blast, which broke windows, tore doors off their hinges and shook the ground.
But authorities are now concerned about those downwind of the fire, with breezes pushing toxic smoke toward more populated neighborhoods.
Invisible gases such as carbon monoxide and sulfur add to the danger.

Obama declared an emergency in Puerto Rico, ordered Federal aid for the area struck by explosions near San Juan.
A large stadium has been prepared to accommodate 30,000 people if necessary.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.  15 fuel tanks caught fire, and 5 were still burning Saturday.

Puerto Rico bankrupt beset by vulture funds
July 29, 2015
-  A group of hedge funds that hold a large proportion of Puerto Rico’s debt have demanded that its government fires teachers, collects more taxes and reforms labor laws, as the US territory contemplates default.
The demand was written by 3 economists linked to the IMF.
The 34 hedge funds was commissioned by the Ad Hoc Group of Puerto Rico.

These vulture funds specialize in buying “distressed debt” – finances owed by borrowers who have no capacity to pay – for pennies on the dollar, and then attempting to extract at least some of the money.
Puerto Rico debt was declared unpayable.

      Puerto Rico defaults

August 3, 2015
-  Puerto Rico's government can not make a $58 million bond payment due.
They are renegotiating its debts.  It is a default no matter how they try to disguise it.  Hedge funds hold roughly one-third of Puerto Rico's debt. But experts have said they don't expect Puerto Rico's problems to have a spillover effect on the broader municipal market.

Misery deepens for those in Puerto Rico who cant escape economic crisis
Most tables are empty at Walter Martin's coffee shop in San Juan.
He's turned off the air conditioning to lower his power bill and cut staff hours and raised prices. But people have cut spending to the basics or flee to Florida for jobs.

A $58 million bond payment went unpaid. If defaults continue, Puerto Rico will face numerous lawsuits and increasingly limited access to markets.

      Puerto Rico for Trump
Mar 6, 2016
-  There is an Open Primary in Puerto Rico today worth 23 Delegates.  If Trump wins this which he should, then he should be able to erase most if not all the Delegates that Cruz gained last night.
Trump should win Mississippi, Michigan and Hawaii on Tuesday expanding his Delegate lead even further along.

Puerto Rico defaults
May 2, 2016
-  Puerto Rico won't make $370 million in debt payments.  Puerto Rico Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla announced that Puerto Rico's government will not make nearly $370 million in bond payments due after a failure to restructure or find a political solution to the U.S. territory's spiraling public debt crisis.

Garcia issued an executive order suspending payments on debt owed by the island's Government Development Bank, a default that will likely prompt lawsuits from creditors.  The governor said Puerto Rico can't pay the bonds without cutting essential services.
Nearly all the bonds are held by U.S. hedge funds and mutual funds.

Puerto Rico bankruptcy
May 4, 2017
-  Puerto Rico sought bankruptcy relief in federal court, the first time in history that an American state or territory had taken the extraordinary measure.  Government workers will forgo pension money, public health and infrastructure projects will go wanting, and professionals move to the mainland.

Puerto Rico is unable to provide its citizens effective services because of its debt.  Many American states face the same strains, including rising pension costs, crumbling infrastructure.

The next step is for the Supreme Court — specifically Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. — to designate a bankruptcy judge to handle the case.
