Michael Janitch
Extremely rare large M6.1 earthquake strikes Central Australia.
It has been many years since Australia has been struck by any noteworthy earthquake activity.  The last noteworthy earthquake was a M5.8 in 2013 approximately 140 miles (220km) to the Southeast.  A quick review of the earthquake epicenter shows open outback desert, and mountains to the South.

Australia earthquake strongest in 19 years
A magnitude 5.9 shallow earthquake has hit Australia some 460 kilometers southwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. The earthquake may have been felt as far as 507 kilometers from its epicenter. The quake is one of the strongest to hit mainland Australia since August 1997.
