6.2-magnitude earthquake hits southern Iran
May 11, 2013  A strong earthquake of 6.2 magnitude hit southern Iran this morning, the US Geological Survey said, with local media reporting of damaged villages and several injuries.
The epicentre of the quake was measured at 85 kilometres southeast of the southern town of Minab at 0208 GMT (0738 IST), the USGS said in a statement. It was at a depth of 36.44 km.
Head of Iran’s Red Crescent rescue corps Mahmoud Mozafar told the Fars news agency that at least 11 people had been injured in five villages which were “severely” hit by the quake.

The Mehr news agency, quoted him as saying that “several houses were levelled” based on preliminary reports. The reports said that rescue teams were dispatched to the affected area.
Iran’s Seismological Centre has registered a series of aftershocks, measuring between 4.1 and 5.2.

Iran sits astride several major fault lines and is prone to frequent earthquakes, some of which have been devastating. Last month, the biggest earthquake to hit the country in 50 years, measuring 7.8, killed a woman and injured more than a dozen other people in the southeast.

At least 40 people were killed across the border in Pakistan where hundreds of mud homes were levelled. A double earthquake, one measuring 6.2 and the other 6.0, struck northwestern Iran last August, killing more than 300 people and injuring 3,000.
In December 2003, a massive quake struck the southern city of Bam. It killed 26,271 people — about a quarter of the population — and destroyed the city’s ancient mud-built citadel.

Earthquake in Iran near nuclear plant kills 7
11/28/13

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 struck a town Thursday in southern Iran, killing seven people while causing no damage at the country's only nuclear power plant, state television reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor struck some 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) northeast of Borazjan. It hit some 60 kilometers (38 miles) north of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which is near the port city of the same name.

The website for state television carried a statement from the plant's operators saying it sustained no damage in the quake.

Bushehr province Gov. Fereidoun Hasanvand told state television that 45 people were injured.

Many people fled their homes during the earthquake, fearful the buildings would crash down on them, local media reported. Those living in neighboring provinces also felt the quake.

In April, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake killed at least 37 people and injured hundreds in a town near Bushehr. The nuclear plant wasn't damaged then.

Iran is located in a zone of tectonic compression where the Arabian plate is moving into the Eurasian plate, leaving more than 90 percent of the country crisscrossed by seismic fault lines.

Nine quakes that hit Iran in the last decades were more than magnitude 6, including a 2003 temblor that killed at least 26,000 people in the city of Bam. Scientists say more fault lines likely will be discovered in the country and more major quakes are only a matter of time.
