He is risen!
Aug 13, 2016
KTAR  -  Sheriff’s post costs county $41,000.  An eastern Tennessee sheriff’s Facebook post celebrating Christ's resurrection has made a group of atheists $15,000 richer.  Bradley County reached a settlement with American Atheists over Sheriff Eric Watson’s post on the department’s Facebook.

The American Atheists said in a news release that Bradley County will pay $15,000 in damages and $26,000 in legal fees. The group also says the sheriff’s office has agreed to not promote any religious belief.  Watson denied violating the plaintiffs’ rights. He says the settlement was a business decision made by the county.

Tennessee police officer killed in shooting
8/25/16

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — A suspect is in custody after a Maryville police officer was shot and killed Thursday afternoon answering a domestic violence call, authorities say.

The officer was pronounced dead at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Police didn't release his name, saying some of his family members were out of town and couldn't be reached.

The shooting occurred at around 4 p.m., Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said.

Officers had been called to the home earlier in the day but left without making an arrest, the chief said. The Maryville officer and a Blount County Sheriff's Office deputy, both members of the 5th Judicial District Drug Task Force, responded to the second call.

As the officers stepped out of their vehicle, a man came out the home shooting, Crisp said.

The Maryville officer was shot but returned fire, Crisp said. The man gave up after shooting the officer, the chief said.

The chief didn't say how many shots were fired or what kind of gun was used.

Zack Wooldridge, who lives nearby, said he heard the shooting.

"It was definitely more than one shot — multiple gunshots," he said.

Knoxville police escorted the ambulance carrying the officer on the drive to the hospital along Alcoa Highway.

Wildfires force evacuation of downtown Gatlinburg
One of Tennessee’s most popular tourist destinations is being evacuated due to wildfires. Downtown Gatlinburg and numerous area neighborhoods, including the southern part of Pigeon Forge, are under a mandatory evacuation.

A fire in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has grown to about 500 acres because of strong winds.  TEMA is asking Sevier County residents to stay off mobile devices unless it is an emergency.

Gatlinburg fires: Death toll rises to 7
11/30/16
http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/30/us/gatlinburg-fires/index.html

Gatlinburg, Tennessee (CNN)The death toll from raging wildfires fires in Sevier County, Tennessee, climbed to seven after authorities recovered three more bodies at a residence, officials said Wednesday.

Authorities are working to identify all the victims and will notify their families as soon as possible, Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters said.

He said he thinks the three latest victims were adults.

"All of us are praying for those families and are very distressed at the loss of life in this situation," Waters said.

Several others are said to be missing after the blazes scorched roughly 15,000 acres in a resort-heavy area of eastern Tennessee, which showered residents with embers and forced tourists to evacuate from their accommodations. More than 700 buildings were either damaged or destroyed in Sevier County and in the Gatlinburg city limits, Waters said.

The fires spread with little warning Monday from the Great Smoky Mountains into inhabited areas in and near the resort towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Waters said about 53 people were injured, and many of them have been released from the hospital.

James Wood's mother is among those missing.

Wood said his mother was telling him on the phone the wildfire that had roared into Gatlinburg had ignited her home.

Then he lost the connection. He hasn't heard from his mom, Alice Hagler, since Monday night.

"We had been talking for several hours on and off," Wood told CNN affiliate WATE on Tuesday night. He had been living with his mother at her Gatlinburg house for the last five months but wasn't home that night.

"She called me at 8:30 (p.m.) and said the house was on fire. I told her to get out immediately. We got disconnected and I have not been able to get in touch with her since," said Wood.

Hagler's relatives say they hope she might be taking shelter with someone and just hasn't been able to make contact. It's a hope echoed by several other families who say their loved ones in the Gatlinburg area are missing.

"Our search and rescue teams are going out house by house," Waters told CNN on Wednesday. "There's a few areas that we were unable to get to on Monday night because of the swift nature of the firestorm ... and we're finishing those up today.

Death toll 13 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee fires
Dec 2, 2016  -  Dollywood employee finds burned Bible page after wildfires
.
The day after wildfires tore through Gatlinburg, damaging or destroying more than 700 structures, killing at least 10 people and displacing thousands, Isaac McCord was picking up debris from the Dollywood park grounds.

He caught a glimpse of a piece of paper lying in a puddle of water.  It was a Bible verse which perfectly reflected the tragic natural disaster that had thrust Gatlinburg and Sevier County into the national spotlight.

Joel 1:19-20
O Lord to thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field. The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.  How the beasts groaned and roared for help.
