8.1  Major earthquake SW of Sumatra, Indonesia
Mar 2, 2016
 -  Tsunami Warning!  USGS originally put the magnitude at 8.2 then lowered to 7.9.
A powerful and shallow earthquake of magnitude 7.9 struck off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.  There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. However, shallower earthquakes are more likely to cause damage.

In 2004, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck off Sumatra, resulting in a tsunami. A total of 230,000 people were killed across a dozen countries, including Thailand.

This quake follows dozens of deep earthquakes which struck Fiji, Indonesia, and the Philippines.  Luckily, no wave was generated from this event.

Broken Tsunami Warning System
Mar 4, 2016
-  Scientists installed buoy systems after 2004 that could warn people of a tsunami and hopefully save thousands of lives.  When a magnitude 7.8 quake shook Indonesia this week, tsunami warnings were spread. The quake had struck 500 miles west of Padang. Warnings for places like Coco Island, parts of Australia, and Christmas Island went out shortly after. Sirens rang in some coastal areas that were threatened, but oddly not in others. The tsunami warning apparantly sounded 2 hours after the tsunami - which was just a small wave.
All 22 buoys installed in the area hadnt even been operational.

Earthquake strikes off Indonesia's Sumatra, sending tremors as far as Singapore

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake off the coast off the Indonesian island of Sumatra early Thursday sent tremors as far as the neighboring country of Singapore.

The U.S. Geological Survey, which reported the earthquake at 6:56 p.m. ET, calculated that the quake occurred 56.5 miles west of Sungaipenuh on Sumatra, and 329.9 miles southwest of Singapore.

On December 26, 2004 a magnitude 9.3 earthquake off Sumatra set off tsunamis on the coasts of Indonesia, Sr Lanka, India, Thailand and 10 other countries, killing an estimated 230,000 people. The so-called Boxing Day tsunami was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.

Reuters reported on Thursday that there were no immediate reports of damage or injury in Indonesia, while BMKG Indonesia, the country's agency for meteorology, climatology and geophysics, said that there was no tsunami threat.

Early risers in Singapore took to social media on Thursday to say that they had felt tremors from latest quake.
