Panic hits Taiwan after 5.9 tremor rattles mainland
February 27, 2012 – TAIWAN - A shallow 5.9-magnitude earthquake sent people fleeing onto the streets in Taiwan’s second-largest city of Kaohsiung and led to temporary halting of rail services. No casualties were reported yesterday. The quake struck 57 kilometers east of the southern city at 10.34am at a depth of just four kilometers, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The Hong Kong Observatory measured the quake at a magnitude of six, while Taiwan’s Seismology Centre put it at 6.1. The National Fire Agency said there were no casualties or major material damage. “A few Kaohsiung residents sought safety in the streets for a short while, but it wasn’t many,” a police officer said. A spokesman for the center said it is relatively rare for a quake of such magnitude to hit the Kaohsiung area. “While the quake was strong, it didn’t last long,” Chen Jung-yu said. “Even in some towns near the epicenter, buildings swayed for no more than seven seconds. That explained why it did not inflict damages.” A high-speed railway linking Kaohsiung with Taipei in the north resumed about 90 minutes after the quake prompted services to be suspended. The greater metropolitan area of Kaohsiung has a population of nearly three million. Taiwan is regularly hit by quakes as it lies near the junction of two tectonic plates. –The Standard

TAIPEI, Taiwan - A powerful earthquake has struck off northeastern Taiwan, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau says the quake registered at magnitude 6.5. It says the tremor was felt throughout the island.
The earthquake struck Sunday morning at sea, about 42 miles (70 kilometres) east of the Taiwanese county of Ilan.
Ilan is about 90 miles (150 kilometres) southeast of the capital, Taipei.
Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage.
However, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.

58 inches of rain in Taiwan
August 2, 2012 Tropical Storm Saola dumped 5 feet of rain across northern Taiwan that flooded farmland.
Saola weakened from a typhoon to a tropical storm but its slow movement and continuing heavy rains raised flooding in areas that have absorbed more than 58 inches of rain.
It has caused five deaths and left two people missing in Taiwan after killing 26 people in the Philippines.
Dozens of flights were canceled at Taipei’s main international airport, where heavy winds destroyed two jetways, and rail transport throughout the island was disrupted.
Saola was forecast to hit China’s east coast Friday morning.

Strong earthquake kills one, injures 19 in Taiwan
27 Mar 2013 A strong earthquake killed one person and injured 19 others in Taiwan today as violent shock waves damaged buildings and triggered a blaze, emergency officials said.
The US Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.0 and said it struck at 10:03 am local time, 48 kilometres east of Nantou county in central Taiwan at a depth of 20.7 kilometres.
Taiwan's central weather bureau put the magnitude at 6.1, saying it was the largest quake this year and was felt across the island. Five aftershocks measured from 3.7-4.3 in magnitude occurred in two hours after the main tremor, it said.
