Santorini: history’s most dreaded volcano awakes and is rapidly inflating warns geologist
March 14, 2012
 -  The British Broadcasting Company named it the world’s best island in 2011. Santorini is a tourist magnet, famous for its breathtaking, cliff side views and sunsets. It’s also a volcanic island that has been relatively calm since its last eruption in 1950. Until now. The Santorini caldera is awake again and rapidly deforming at levels never seen before. Georgia Tech Associate Professor Andrew Newman has studied Santorini since setting up more than 20 GPS stations on the island in 2006. “After decades of little activity, a series of earthquakes and deformation began within the Santorini caldera in January of 2011,” said Newman, whose research is published by Geophysical Research Letters. “Since then, our instruments on the northern part of the island have moved laterally between five and nine centimeters. The volcano’s magma chamber is filling, and we are keeping a close eye on its activity.” Newman, a geophysicist in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, cannot be certain whether an eruption is imminent since observations of such activity on these types of volcanoes are limited. In fact, similar calderas around the globe have shown comparable activity without erupting. However, Newman says the chamber has expanded by 14 million cubic meters since last January. That means enough magma has been pumped into the chamber to fill a sphere three football fields across. Should Santorini erupt, Newman says it will likely be comparable to what the island has seen in the last 450 years. “That could be dangerous,” notes Newman. “If the caldera erupts underwater, it could cause local tsunamis and affect boat traffic, including cruise ships, in the caldera. Earthquakes could damage homes and produce landslides along the cliffs.” –E Science News

Earthquake swarms could indicate eruption near Nisyros, Greece
5 Dec 2012
A seismic swarm of 2000 microearthquakes near the island of Nisyros since 24 November could indicate a start of a or coming of a volcanic eruption near Nisyros.
The quakes are located between the area of Simi Island (Greece) and the Bozburun peninsula of SW Turkey: click here for a map and list of quakes.
Information is still scanty, but seismic signals from this possible eruption are very similar to those recorded from current volcanic eruptions.
If an eruption is taking place, it would form a new submarine volcano near Nisyros.
No proof has yet been found to prove that an eruption may be taking place. Some sources think the swarm may be tectonic (as the Aegean sea is very seismically active). The VolcanoDiscovery alert will be kept at Green until further evidence is found.

Strong 6.0  EarthQuake Shakes Kurdistan  (Turkey)
Dozens dead from earthquake in Turkey
March 8,  2010
A strong 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey, killing 57 people and knocking down
houses in several villages.  Minarets of mosques fell - GOOD!  This quake is just north of Iraq.
It was followed by over 30 aftershocks, the strongest measuring 5.5.  The government said around 100 people were
injured in the quake, which occurred at 4:32 a.m. and caught many people in their sleep.

The village of Okcular is totally flattened.  Occular relates to the eye, and Turkey has been in the eye of a self-created storm.
One Okcular resident was woken by the jolt.  The temblor also knocked down barns, killing farm animals.
Turkey's Red Crescent organization sent tents and blankets to the region.
Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies on top of the North Anatolian fault.
In 1999, two powerful earthquakes struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

Some injuries and damages were reported as far as Jordan. Hundreds have fled their homes in neighboring Turkey.
The under-sea quake caused an immediate injury in Greece, according to local police, as cited by the AP. Further injuries were reported by Greece's neighbors as panic-stricken residents fled homes.

There are reports of people feeling tremors all the way in Turkey, Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories. Initial reports by the USGS reported a 6.4 magnitude, while the Institute of Geophysics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki put the strength at 6.3. The epicenter was estimated to be between Samothraki and Lemnos. Local police in the latter city report a part of the airport's ceiling has collapsed, which caused the one injury - a British female tourist.

"It lasted very long and it was very intense. We haven't got the full picture of the damage caused yet," the city's mayor, Antonis Chatzidiamantis, told Mega TV.

Local media report that the quake was felt in many major parts of Greece, both in the south and the north, in Athens and Thessaloniki. Aftershocks reportedly hit 6.7 in Turkey's Istanbul, Izmir and Canakkale, as hundreds in the western parts fled their homes, fearing structural collapses. A video has been uploaded by Turkish media, depicting the panic.
Some 20 people were hospitalized.
