5.4-magnitude earthquake shakes Las Vegas, other parts of Nevada
5/22/15

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook Las Vegas and surrounding areas Friday morning. The quake, which hit at 11:47 a.m., was centered about 24 miles south-southwest of Caliente, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The earthquake might have caused minor freeway damage in Las Vegas. The ramp from southbound U.S. Route 95 to southbound Interstate 15 was closed due to damage about 12:20 p.m., the Nevada Department of Transportation said in a tweet.

The damage had not been officially linked to the earthquake, but the Nevada Highway Patrol said transportation officials were inspecting the ramp. It was not clear how long it would remain closed. Meanwhile, officers were checking for possible damage at other major freeway interchanges, NHP Trooper Loy Hixson said.

The Nevada Department of Transportation won’t be undertaking a widespread inspection of the state’s bridges as a result of the earthquake because most bridges are designed and engineered to withstand small quakes. But a ramp at the Spaghetti Bowl is being checked.

“We are currently inspecting for any potential damage following the recent earthquake in Caliente, including the U.S. (Highway) 95 southbound ramp to I-15 southbound that is currently closed due to possible structural damage,” said Tony Illia, a spokesman for the department.

“All of our bridge structures are designed to withstand rigorous wind and earthquake loading,” Illia said. “Nevada lies within an active seismic zone, which is something that we take into account during the project design and engineering phase.”

Illia said Nevada has some of the best-rated bridges in the country, according to a recent report by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association. Only 1.8 percent of Nevada bridges are classified as structurally deficient, which is the lowest in the country. The national average is 6 percent.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office had no immediate reports of any damage in or around Caliente.

A couple of items fell off the shelves of a grocery store, but it didn’t cause any serious damage to the old building, Great Basin Foods manager Alyson Hammond said.

Though the temblor was felt across Southern Nevada and as far away as Irvine, Calif., “we barely felt a thing here,” said Deputy Dathan Lewis at the sheriff’s office in Pioche, about 20 miles north of Caliente.

At Priest Elementary School, near Craig Road and Simmons Street in North Las Vegas, former Review-Journal reporter Francis McCabe said the shaking seemed to go on for about 15-30 seconds and prompted a few people to venture outside the building.

The USGS reported two more quakes, a 3.8 at 12:05 p.m. and a 3.0 at 12:19 p.m.

People across the Las Vegas area reported feeling the first earthquake, including in Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City. People in three other states — Utah, Arizona and California — also reported on the USGS website that they felt it.

Old dormant volcanoes earthquakes in Nevada
May 27, 2015 -  Pressure is building in the Southwest United States
.
Over the past week a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck a dormant volcanic butte near Las Vegas Nevada.
May 26 had an earthquake swarm there.  Several long dormant volcanic buttes in the area of the epicenter.

The rocks atop these small buttes indicate an eruptive past.
The location of the larger 5.4M earthquake appears to be 2 old undersea volcanoes less than a mile away.

These dormant volcanic buttes can be seen across the landscape.
They are showing movement after several other dormant volcanoes saw activity along the West coast over the past week (including Mount Hood, Glacier Peak, Mammoth Mountain, Mono Lake, + Salton Sea).

Three different 3.0M+ earthquakes have struck in the past hour since originally posting this at 940pm CDT May 26, 2015

California, Nevada Quake swarm
May 27, 2015
-  Quake swarm over the past 24 hours at multiple dormant volcanoes in California, and Nevada.
Northern California seismic activity very close to Mount Lassen volcano, with a M3.0 earthquake striking next to a chain of smaller nearby volcanic buttes.

Further South in California, just across the border in Baja Mexico (Gulf of California), another series of dormant buttes showed seismic activity in the same few hours time.
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthq...0#scientific_origin:ci_ci37388000

Just like the volcanoes in Northern California, these smaller buttes are part of a greater volcanic complex.  There is an old super-volcano located in Baja Mexico.

There were earthquakes at the dormant volcanoes in both California and near Las Vegas, Nevada.
This seismic unrest is related to greater movement in the region, and is a sign of something to watch as a gauge for larger earthquake unrest to possibly come in the near term.

NEVADA, 3.4 earthquake near Las Vegas
June 12, 2015
-  scientist Michael Janitch
http://dutchsinse.com/6122015-ear...nt-butte-volcanoes-near-epicenter

California and Nevada dormant volcanoes showed seismic activity over the past 48 hours including a M3.4 in Goldfield, NV.  A swarm of earthquakes at The Geysers, California, and near Clear Lake Volcano, CA.  On June 10 Michael forecast activity along the edge of the craton (portion of a continental plate), and along the West coast of the United States.

More earthquakes along the U.S. West coast at multiple dormant volcanoes.
New tremors Southeast Nevada near Las Vegas with a magnitude
This location in Nevada is not the only dormant volcano to show movement on the West coast over the past 2-3 days.

3.0 earthquake volcanic Nevada
June 20, 2015
-  by Michael Janitch -  Another rare earthquake has struck Southern Nevada near Las Vegas, and the nearby dormant volcanic buttes.  After seeing the central craton show displacement June 18, a warning was issued to watch the Southwest.  This Nevada volcanic quake comes after days with no Southwest USA earthquake activity above 3.0.  Now June 19 another rare Nevada earthquake struck near the same location which was hit by a M5.4 nearly one month ago on May 22, 2015.
