South Korea stages more military drills
13 December 2010 South Korea has begun another week-long series of live-fire military exercises along most of its coastline.
However, the drills will avoid the disputed western sea-border, where North Korea shelled an island last month, killing four South Koreans.
North Korea said that attack was in direct response to South Korean military exercises there. It says drills by the South are a provocation.
There have been intense international diplomatic efforts to calm the crisis.

Last week, China's top diplomat met North Korean leader Kim Jong-il in Pyongyang, with Chinese state media reporting a "consensus" had been reached.
The US has been putting pressure on China - the North's main ally - to intervene in the crisis.
Top US military official Adm Mike Mullen has accused China of "enabling" North Korea's "reckless behaviour".

China has hit back, saying military threats cannot resolve tensions on the Korean peninsula.
In a hardening of policy, South Korea has threatened to mount air strikes on the North if it carries out further attacks.

China, which supplies food and fuel to North Korea, has so far refused to condemn the attack on Yeonpyeong, the first attack of its kind on South Korean civilians since the Korean War ended in a ceasefire in 1953.

Both Japan and South Korea have carried out joint military exercises with the US in the past few weeks.
China has criticised those exercises as an attempt at US containment in an area Beijing sees as its own responsibility.
North Korea has been defending its shelling of Yeonpyeong as a response to extensive live-firing from the South.

Fishermen missing in Antarctic as South Korea ship sinks
22 feared dead
13 December 2010
17 fishermen are missing in icy waters following the sinking of a South Korean vessel in the Southern Ocean.
At least five of the 42-man crew died and 20 were rescued after the deep-sea trawler went down about 2,000km (1,250 miles) south of New Zealand.
Rescuers have scaled back the search, saying it was unlikely that any of those missing would survive for long.
The crew included nationals from South Korea, China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Russia.

South Korea's foreign ministry said the 614-tonne ship, the Number One In Sung, sank at around 0430 South Korean time on Monday (1930 GMT on Sunday).
Twenty sailors were rescued by another fishing boat operating nearby, the South Korean foreign ministry said in a statement.
New Zealand rescuers said it was not clear why the boat sank. Conditions were calm and no SOS was sent.
Survival times in the water in the area would be about 10 minutes without life-jackets or immersion suits, rescuers said after scaling back the search.

"It (is) becoming increasingly unlikely further survivors (will) be found," rescue controller Dave Wilson told AFP news agency.
Ross Henderson, a spokesperson for Maritime New Zealand, earlier said all vessels in the remote area had been told to go to the site to help search for survivors after the incident was reported.

South Korea to hold firing drills despite NKorea threat
Dec 18, 2010
South Korean troops geared up Saturday for artillery drills on a border island shelled by North Korea last month despite Pyongyang's threat to retaliate again, as Russia and China expressed concerns over rising tensions on the divided peninsula.
The North warned Friday that it would strike even harder than before if the South went ahead with its planned drills. Four people died last month in the North's attack on Yeonpyeong Island near the tense sea border.

The U.S. supports South Korea, saying the country has a right to conduct such a military exercise. However, Russia's Foreign Ministry expressed its "extreme concern" Friday over the drills and urged South Korea to cancel them to prevent a further escalation of tensions.
The Russian ministry issued a separate statement later Friday urging North Korea to demonstrate maximum restraint and refrain from taking actions that could lead to a repeat of last month's artillery exchange with the South.

China, the North's key ally, said it is firmly against any acts that could worsen already-high tensions on the Korean peninsula. "In regard to what could lead to worsening the situation or any escalation of acts of sabotage of regional peace and stability, China is firmly and unambiguously opposed," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a statement Saturday.
China's Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun also warned in a statement that the situation on the Korean peninsula is "extremely precarious."

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said Saturday that marines would go ahead with the drills as scheduled and that the military was ready to respond to any possible provocation.
"We have a right to conduct our own military drills," a Joint Chiefs of Staff officer said.

The North's threat and the Chinese and Russian concerns will not affect the timing of the exercise, said the officer, who spoke anonymously, citing department rules.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Kim Young-sun said the drills are defensive in nature and are not aimed at stoking regional tensions.
The artillery drills were not expected to be held over the weekend because of bad weather and will be conducted either Monday or Tuesday, the Joint Chiefs of Staff officer said.

Dec 2010 UNITED NATIONS - The UN Security Council will probably convene an emergency session on Saturday on the escalating tension between North and South Korea, council diplomats said.
Diplomats said the meeting was tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m., although it could change.
The meeting was called at the request of Russia.

Wow...a VERY busy day indeed with the world governments. Congress trying to ram through numerous draconian legislations
(DREAM Act died, next up "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repeal lifted, and then START), and now this?
Next week could be a very interesting week!

The poster on a message board says
"I can tell you now that SK has put their F-15s on alert, to the point of crews in cockpits with live ammo.
There was an embargo on the news until minutes ago. A couple of websites seem to have it now.
Whether this is in relation to the drills starting or whether this is to head off any NK trouble they may think happens first I don't know."

"I am told that the batting order is that SK will agree the timing with the US. That will then be given to Russia and China.
The timing will then be given to the public, with those left on the island being offered shelter."

Seems to have insider info.
Sounds like its gonna go down.

Russia seriously concerned over Korea tensions
18 December 2010
Russia says it is seriously concerned that tensions between North and South Korea will escalate further.
Pyongyang is threatening to retaliate if the South goes ahead with planned military exercises on an island near the two countries' disputed sea border.
Last month four people were killed when the North attacked the island during similar exercises.

The UN Security Council is preparing to discuss the situation at an emergency meeting, scheduled at Russia's request.
Russian ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin said his country was "seriously concerned about possible further escalation of tensions on the Korean peninsula".
"We believe that the Security Council must send a restraining signal... and help launch diplomatic activity with a view to resolving all issues of dispute between the two Korean sides by political and diplomatic means," he said.

South Korea army to hold largest ever live-fire drill
SEOUL Dec 22, 2010
The South Korean army said it will hold its largest-ever live-fire drill near the military border with the North on Thursday in a show of force in the wake of Pyongyang's attack on one of its islands last month.
The drill, involving artillery, fighter jets and the largest number of personnel in a peace-time exercise, comes after the South's live-fire artillery exercise on Monday on the island near the tensely guarded sea border and is likely to infuriate Pyongyang.
It will take place on the South Korean mainland.
Tension on the peninsula had begun to ease on Wednesday after suggestions the North might admit U.N. nuclear monitors and South Korea's finance minister said the local economy was weathering the standoff.

I would beware of any "insider info" posts on GLP - not saying this particular one is disinfo, but for the large post, the big majority of them are trolls wanting to stir up everyone's emotions there.

For the most part, I go to this MB because alot of news stories of interest get posted there that I don't see elsewhere, but just be discerning over these "insider info" posts.

New South Korea exercises
December 22,  2010
This could be the retaliation their people demand.  My first reaction was - ARE THEY CRAZY!?[/color]
South Korea has said it will hold new large-scale military drills involving ground and air live fire on Thursday.
Artillery, jets and about 800 soldiers will take part, the government said, alongside separate naval exercises that began on Wednesday.

Tension has been high since North Korea shelled the South's Yeonpyeong island last month, killing four South Koreans.
Drills by the South on Monday near Yeonpyeong sparked Northern threats of retaliation that did not materialise.
An army spokesman said Thursday's drill would be held at Pocheon, 20km (12 miles) south of the border - about 50km from central Seoul.
Exercises have been held at Pocheon before, but this would be on an unprecedented scale, the spokesman said.

"The scale of mechanised assets taking place is enormous. When we would normally have 6 K-9 mechanised artillery, we'll have 36.
"We'll have the F-15 jets firing. We'll have choppers. You can say most of the mechanised assets taking part will be firing live ammunition," the spokesman said.
"We will retaliate thoroughly if the North commits another provocative act like the shelling of Yeonpyeong," First Armoured Battalion commander Choo Eun-sik told Yonhap news agency.
"Through this exercise [at Pocheon], we will demonstrate our solid military preparedness," he said.

The BBC's Kevin Kim in Seoul says this is the largest winter live-fire exercise ever conducted on land here.
Separately, a "routine" four-day naval firing exercise has begun off the east coast of South Korea, involving six warships and helicopters.

North Korea threatens nuclear 'holy war' with South
December 23,  2010
North Korea is ready for a "sacred war of justice" using a nuclear deterrent, its armed forces minister has said.
Kim Yong-chun accused South Korea of making preparations for war by holding live-fire exercises near the border.
The drills are one of the largest in South Korea's history, involving tanks, helicopters and fighter planes.
South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has promised immediate retaliation to any further Northern attack.

The BBC's John Sudworth says people on the Korean peninsula are used to fiery rhetoric from Pyongyang, but as the tension escalates, the danger is that one side will feel forced to act on its threats.
'Military provocation'

The South Korean army acknowledged that the drill was aimed to display its firepower.
Although the South has conducted 47 military drills this year, this is the largest winter live-fire exercise ever conducted on land.
The North earlier branded Seoul's exercises "warmongering" but until now had not threatened the South with any retaliation.

South Korean Naval ship sinks, torpedo suspected
March 29, 2010  update
They are no longer saying the ship was sunk by North Korea.
However ... I wonder

South Korean Naval ship sinks, torpedo suspected
March 26, 2010
-  North Korea 'torpedoes and sinks' South Korean navy ship with 104 sailors on board.
South Korean navy ship sunk in the Yellow Sea near Baengnyeong island off the west coast.
It may have been hit by a North Korean torpedo and several sailors were killed.  It is believed 59 sailors have been rescued.

A South Korean warship later fired at an unidentified vessel toward the north, indicating a possible attack, and South Korea presidential Blue House was holding an emergency security meeting.

The ship appears to have begun sinking after an explosion at the rear of the ship.
In apparent retaliation, the South Korean navy shot at an unidentified ship in the direction of North Korea.
One report said the target turned out to be a flock of birds.

The South Korean vessel alleged that the North Korean vessel had crossed the disputed sea border, North Korea denied.

A man from North Korea recently escaped.  I am sure NK didnt like that at all.

South Korea shuts down nuclear reactor
April 13, 2011
South Korea oldest nuclear reactor has gone offline due to an electrical malfunction, amid growing controversy over the extension of its life.
The Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) said the Gori-1 reactor in northeastern South Korea was turned off after experiencing problems with electricity supplied from outside the plant.

Korea at a turning point
January 2, 2012
There is in many ways only ONE KOREA, not two.  There have been unification efforts.
The crazed ruler died in December 2011 - will his son be better - or worse?

The Korean peninsula is at a turning point and there are opportunities for change, said South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.
He said Seoul would respond strongly if provoked by North Korea, with whom it remains technically at war, but his biggest goal is stability.
Lee Myung-bak said peace is his priority and that a window of opportunity had opened for better ties with the North.
