Zechariah 4 is the Old Testament prophecy of the Two Witnesses of Revelation 11. When you “take the words apart” it reveals their identity, which is further enhanced/revealed in Revelation 11.
Most people start backwards, with Revelation 11, trying to identify the Two Witnesses, virtually or completely ignoring Zech 4. When you begin with Zech 4, it starts you on the right path to the correct interpretation.
The Lord has never “recycled” His prophets, but uses contemporary individuals. He would not leave so important a prophecy as the Two Witnesses without definite indications of their identity.
There are several times in Scripture where the Lord has revealed by name a person who is the fulfillment of an important prophecy so there will be no doubt as to the identity. The same is true with the important prophecy of the identity of the Mark of the Beast. When one starts at the back end of a prophecy it leads to speculation and erroneous interpretations. The interpretation of the Mark of the Beast also begins in the Old Testament.
Who are the 2 witnesses?

The Two Witnesses are not...What is the Biblical proof the 2W cannot be the literal Enoch, Elijah or Moses?
All 3 of the above named are in heaven. They have received their heavenly, immortal bodies, which they received at translation or resurrection, and are not subject to death, (1 Cor. 15:50-54)
“Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.” 1 Cor. 15:50.
These three who have received their immortal bodies cannot die. Yet, Revelation 11:7,8 clearly states the 2W die, are killed by Satan himself—the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit—and their dead bodies lie in the street and are seen by the whole world at the same time (on TV), their bodies corrupting for 3 ½ days (72+ hours).
[Note: Christ had to be incarnated into a body of flesh and blood (Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith,… a body hast thou prepared me: Heb. 10:5), taking upon Himself sinful flesh, in order to be able to die, but He did not stay in the grave long enough to be corrupted (Acts 2:27).]
Christ identified John the Baptist as the “Elijah” of His first Advent and introduced the defining concept of great, greater and greater (greatest).
“9But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” Matt. 11: 9-11
After seeing the vision of Moses and Elijah talking with Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matt. 17:3), the disciples ask, “Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come?” Vs. 10. Christ’s answer introduces the concept of “has come”, “is come”, and “shall come”, corresponding to His previous description of great, greater and greatest. Has come is great; is come is greater; shall come is greatest.
11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. 12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed…. 13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist. (Matt. 17:11-13)
Biblical names represent character and may be used several times. The name Eli-jah is a compound name meaning God-Jehovah, or a prophet whose God is Jehovah. Thus the name can refer to John the Baptist, or another true prophet.
Prototype: Elijah #1, Elijah the Tishbite; a great prophet; “has come.”
1st Advent: “Elijah” #2, John the Baptist; no greater prophet; “is come,” in the spirit and power of Elijah (the Tishbite).
2nd Advent: “Elijah” #3 ________; the least*, but greater than JB; “shall come.”
Logically, if #3 is greater than #2, and #2 is greater than #1, then #3 cannot be either #2 or #1.
So, how does Scripture identify #3, so there can be no mistake?[color=black]
One of the 2W name clue in Zech 4The identification by name of the “Two Witnesses” of Revelation 11 begins in Zechariah 4. To identify the 2W from Scripture we can first line up the clues, then let the Bible (KJV) define the terms. The answers to the full picture-puzzle will eventually come from Genesis, Exodus, Psalms, Micah, Malachi, Christ’s words in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, as well as Revelation.
Both chapters begin with a “wake-up” call. Zech. 4:1, “The angel…waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep.” This corresponds to Rev. 11:1, “Rise!” Get up! Wake up! Boom! Alarm clock! Sleepers wake! The prophecy in both chapters begins with and represents a loud cry, a wake-up call to the sleeping virgins/church: Behold! The Bridegroom cometh; trim your doctrinal lamps and prepare to meet Him.
The importance of the prophecy is emphasized 6 times in this one chapter. The elements of a prophecy of this importance are going to be well-identified in Scripture, so there is no mistake, no justification for speculation. The clues given are anchor points to other end-time prophecy.

James and John (and their Jewish Mama) asked for these two positions, but are told they have been assigned to others. Mark 10:40; Matt. 20:20-28.
[Note that at the vision of the Transfiguration, when Moses and Elijah were seen talking with Christ, nothing is said in either Matthew or Mark about them standing on His right side or His left side. The request of James and John is also recorded in only these two gospels. This seems to be a significant omission, easily overlooked. Luke adds, they “appeared in glory”—their glorified, heavenly bodies. Luke 9:31]

A specific clue has been given early in Zechariah for the first name of one of the 2W.
The Mark of the Beast and the Two WitnessesWith increasing frequency, whether out of ignorance or design, there is more discussion, more sermons, and even elaborate studies promoting the Mark of the Beast. Since it is an issue that determines eternal life or eternal death as well as temporal life or death we should be concerned that we understand the true issue. The promise is certain: anyone who determines to do the will of God, whatever the cost, will know the true teaching/doctrine. John 7:17.
For those whose trust is in God, the real issue will be made abundantly clear before the door of salvation is shut. God will call His true followers to come out and away from the confusing wine of spiritual Babylon. This is the work and message of the Two Witnesses (of Zechariah 4 and Revelation 11), who empty the golden oil out of themselves, who oppose the Antichrist, who are to “restore all things” (Matt. 17:11), including the faith once delivered to the saints. The vast majority, those who have not received a love of (the) truth, will follow delusive doctrines of devils.
“If any man worship”; the Mark of the Beast is an issue of worship. (Rev. 13: 8, 12, 15; Rev. 14:7, 9, 11) The issue is a choice, decided in the forehead. Worship cannot be separated from obedience. (Deu. 11:16; 1 Ki. 9:6) To worship God and receive His Seal—the Father’s name and character in the forehead—is to refuse to worship the beast or to receive the Mark. To refuse the Mark is to be shut out of society; one cannot buy or sell, effectively receiving a temporal death sentence. To choose to receive the Mark is to be shut out of Eternal Life.
The worship issue has been clearly defined in Rev. 13 and 14. The answer to whether one is worshiping the beast or the God of Creation is just as easy to know. After discussing who receives the Mark vs. the Seal of God, Christ says, “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Rev. 14:12. And again at the very end of Revelation, “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.” Rev. 22:14.
There has been no 10% discount. What is written on the original tables of the Law, kept in the Ark of His Testament in heaven, is the same Law God wrote with His finger on the tables of stone given to Moses. (Rev. 11:19; Heb. 8:5) Is there an asterisk beside any one of the 10 to indicate it was temporary or optional? “If any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book…” Rev. 22:19, 20.
Only one Commandment God has said is His Sign; only one carries His Seal, giving His name and His authority: YHVH, Creator of heaven and earth. Only one commandment is given with the specific sentence of death for its violation. (Ex. 31:13-17.) There is only one day God has said is His holy day. (Isa. 58:13, 14.) God declared His holy appointed day was set apart for holy convocation and worship (Lev. 23:2,3)—not only on this earth, but also in the earth made new. Isa. 66:22, 23.
The man of sin (the lawless one) has set up a rival day of worship. The official sign that points the believer’s way to the heavenly kingdom has been turned backwards. He who thinks to change times and laws has substituted the profane for the Holy. When his law is enforced, for want of food and clothing, men will join the world in accepting the sign of worship of the beast (in the forehead) and will accept his number in their hand.
The issue behind the Mark/sign of the Beast should not be confused with the numbering method used to implement and enforce it—the #666 numbering system. Though the issues of the Mark of the Beast and the Seal of God have been in contest since Eden, the ability of man to number every person on earth, and enforce permission to buy or sell by use of that number, has not been in place until these end times with the invention of the computer, with large enough capacity to track every person and transaction on the globe, the scanable bar code and the implantable chip. Not until one decides (the forehead) to worship the beast AND receive his mark (action of the hand) does the implanted or embedded chip become a salvation issue. Rev. 14:9.
The issue behind the Mark of the Beast that will be made plain by the final “Elijah-type” of the Two Witnesses is the same as Elijah the Tishbite declared on Mount Carmel: if God be God, follow Him, but if Baal, follow him. “Worship Him that made heaven and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” Rev. 14:7b
The issue and evidence of compliance will be as clear for every Christian as it was in the days of Nebuchadnezzar’s command to worship his image or be thrown into the burning fiery furnace. Daniel 3.
If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know the true doctrine. (from John 7:17) But if one receives not the love of the truth, he will believe instead the strong delusion and be denied eternal life. This warning is from the longest passage, in 2 Thess. 2, describing the coming and attributes of the Antichrist. The Beast has several faces (heads). We need to look behind the masks where Satan’s seat is to see who is really the controlling puppet-master in this issue.
Interpreters of the prophecy of the Two Witnesses (2W) usually begin and end in Revelation 11, but this is really the back door of the prophecy. Starting at the back end of the prophecy has led to speculation and myth-understanding. Mistakes in identity of the 2W would not have been made if the beginning of the prophecy had been recognized and taken into account first.
Zechariah 4 contains four key points that start us on the path of correct interpretation and identification: 1) Importance of correctly identifying the symbols is stressed 7 times, 2) The name of the most identifiable one of the 2W is given twice in a symbol; 3) One aspect of their ministry is represented by the symbol of emptying the golden oil out of themselves, and 4) A defining characteristic of the most important of the Two Witnesses is given.
How to Avoid an Identity Crisis
The need to identify the symbols correctly in the prophecy of Zechariah 4 is emphasized 7 times in this one short chapter! No other prophecy in all of Scripture is emphasized in this way, this many times; the identity of the 2W is actually the focus of this chapter. The defining elements of a prophecy of this importance are going to be identified in Scripture, so there is no mistake, no justification for speculation. The Two Name Clues are Given Twice
Both Zechariah 4 and Revelation 11 begin with a “wake-up call” to those who are sleeping, “Behold the Bridegroom cometh; Go ye out to meet Him.” “Rise and measure,” for “The hour of His judgment is come.”
After waking Zechariah from sleep, the angel “said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right (H#3225) side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof”. …“Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof?” Zech. 4:2,3, 11.
The angel summarizes the identity of the symbols in verse 14: “These are the two anointed ones that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.” Cross-referencing the 2 olive trees and 2 candlesticks of Zech. 4, they are identified as “My Two Witnesses” and “two prophets” standing before the God of the earth in Revelation 11.
Knowing the prophecy of Zechariah 4 and believing Christ to be the Messiah, James and John asked Christ for these two positions, “But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.” Mark 10:40; Matt. 20:20-28. The significance of the designated right hand and left hand is seen in other Scriptures, such as Gen. 48: 13,14 when Jacob blessed the two sons of Joseph; in Deut. 33:2: “From His right hand went a fiery law for them”; and in the prophetic scripture of Dan. 12:7, lifting up the right hand and the left hand signals the beginning of a time period.
Two Olive Trees
The ‘two olive trees’ indicate the 2W are both from the literal seed of Abraham. Jeremiah 11:16; Romans 11. This will be a surprise to most, but is a facet of the promise “unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.” Gal. 3:8, Gen. 22:18.
One of the 2W is designated as the prophet of the right hand (H#3225) side of the bowl, standing by the God of the whole earth; the other is on the left hand side.
H#3225, from H#3231, is transliterated: yamiyn
‘First mention,’ is an important exegetical principle demonstrated by Jacob when he named the ‘son of the right hand’ in Gen. 35:18 and prophesied that in the very end of time this son’s namesake would “ravin as a wolf.” Gen. 49:1, 27. Jacob “wittingly’ and prophetically showed the significance of the right hand vs. the left hand when he blessed the two sons of Joseph. (Gen. 48:13, 14)
“And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died ) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin (H#1144). Gen. 35:18.”
H#1144, from H#1121= ben, meaning son; and H#3225 from H#3231= yamiyn (see above); together the name is Benyamiyn, or Benjamin, meaning "son of the right hand."
A specific clue naming one of the Two Witnesses has been given in the 3rd and 11th verses of Zechariah 4. But Benjamin is a fairly common name even today, so there has to be some defining characteristic that will be a specific sign of the true “son of the right hand,” the correct Benjamin who is God’s “right hand man.” And there is.
In verse 10 the angel warns, Do not despise “the day of small things (H#6996), for they shall rejoice, [“many shall rejoice at his birth”] and shall see the plummet (plumb line) in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven;” Zech. 4:10a.; (Luke 1:14). [The plummet is another identifying clue discussed in another study.]
Day of small things, H#6996 = young, small, insignificant, unimportant, least.
The quality of his ‘least-ness’ is specifically confirmed by Christ in Matt. 11:11, and its parallel passage in Luke 7:24-28. “Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater (*) than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Matt. 11:11”
(*)—a greater what? The subject noun is left out, but the word ‘prophet’ is supplied in the parallel passage in Luke 7:28. He is called “he that is least” in both Matthew and Luke, referring to a specific “he.”
He that is least, Greek #3398 = small, little; transliterated micros; this is the word from which we get the word micro.

The LORD called him ‘the least’ in Zechariah 4 and Matthew 11, and Luke 7, but greater than John the Baptist who came in the spirit and power of Elijah. In Luke 9:48, Christ defined His use of the word ‘least,’ referring to a child. Great, greater, greatest: Elijah the Tishbite was a great OT prophet; there was no greater prophet than John B, but he that is least is the greater prophet—greater than John B and therefore greater than Elijah the Tishbite, so he cannot be either John the Baptist or Elijah the Tishbite.
Zacharias’s prophecy has a dual application: “And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. Luke 1:17.” “And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,… “And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; Luke 1:67, 76.”
Well, well, what do we have here, a child prophet! A ‘least’ prophet named Benjamin who is a greater prophet than John B.! Christ used the word least, referring to children. Luke 9:48. “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.” Psa. 8:2; and Matt. 21:16. The prophecy of Zacharias met only partial fulfillment in John B because he was an adult before his shewing unto Israel.
Is it just a coincidence, or a prophetic divine appointment, that Zechariah (H2148) in the OT and author of this prophecy is the same name as Zacharias in the NT (G2197, of Hebrew origin H2148), the father of John the Baptist, who gave a dual prophecy of the last two who would come “in the spirit and power of Elijah,” identifying one as a child prophet?
Several times in Scripture the LORD, Who has told the end from the beginning, has ‘sign-ified’ by name or characteristic a person who is the fulfillment of an important prophecy or promise so there will be no doubt as to their identity. Examples are the miraculous births of Isaac, Samuel, John and Christ: “A virgin shall conceive…(Isa. 7:14, Matt. 1:23 ) “Thou shalt call his name Jesus…” John was also a miraculous birth. (Luke 1:7, 18 ) “Thou shalt call his name John…[he shall] come in the spirit and power of Elias.” (Luke 1:13, 17) “If ye will receive it, this is Elias which was for to come.” Matt. 11:14 The disciples and the remnant of the nation of Israel at that time were looking for the re-appearance of Elijah the Tishbite, but…
The Elias of the first Advent was named John, not Elijah! What does this mean for our interpretation of the “Elijah” who is yet to come, who will prepare the way for Christ’s Second Advent? His name is “son of the right hand.” He will sit on the right hand of Christ. He who wishes to have ears that hear should “listen up.” The Lord has never “re-cycled” His prophets, but uses individuals contemporary to the time in which they are called to prophesy. Matt. 17: 11-13. This is the little end-time surprise the God of the whole earth “has up His sleeve” that will catch the attention of the whole world in a very short period of time. “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 1 Cor. 1:27.”
This is the little reed like a rod in the hand of Moses [Ex. 4:2] that will identify the “Moses-type” of the 2W and will be a test that measures the temple, the altar and them that worship therein. How will this be a test? “If ye will receive it” the answer is found in Luke 9:46-48.
Satan can come up with a child "prophet" and even name him Benjamin, but there are other unique signs that will be impossible for Satan to counterfeit. You will recognize these when you see them.
