Police hunting a gunman suspected of killing 7 people in southern France are laying siege to a flat in Toulouse. The man, named as Mohammed Merah, 24, a Frenchman of Algerian origin, has said he belongs to al-Qaeda and acted to "avenge Palestinian children".
Police are negotiating with the man, who is still said to be armed but says he may give himself up this afternoon.
Two police officers were injured in exchanges of fire during the raid and the man's brother has been arrested.
The brother was detained in another part of Toulouse and a second brother has attended a police station, French media say.
Interior Minister Claude Gueant, who is at the siege scene, says the man has a Kalashnikov, a mini-Uzi 9mm machine pistol and several handguns.
He earlier threw one gun, a Colt 45, from a window in exchange for a phone.

Three children and their teacher who were killed this week during the shooting attack on their Jewish school in Toulouse, France, were buried in Jerusalem Wednesday.
Jonathan Sandler, 30, a rabbi and teacher at Ozar Hatorah Jewish school, his two sons Gabriel, 3, and Arieh, 6, and Miriam Monsonego, 7, the daughter of the school's principal, were buried at Givat Shaul's Har Hamenuchot cemetery in Jerusalem Wednesday morning, surrounded by thousands of mourners.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe, who accompanied the victims and their families on the flight to Israel, spoke at the somber ceremony. "France will do everything to ensure nothing like this unbelievable tragedy ever happens again," Juppe said, the Jerusalem Post reported. "France will not tolerate terror."
As the funeral was under way, elite French counter terrorism police were surrounding a residential building in northern Toulouse where the suspected perpetrator of the killings, Mohammed Merah, was barricaded. Merah is described as a 23-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent who has traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan, served time for non-terrorism related offenses in French prison, and has reportedly professed allegiance to al-Qaida.

Police quiz Merah proud brother
March 25, 2012 - A brother of Islamist gunman Mohamed Merah has denied helping him mount his deadly attacks in Toulouse and Montauban, a French police source said.
Abdelkader Merah is being questioned at domestic intelligence agency (DCRI) headquarters in Paris, where he was brought along with his partner.
Mohamed Merah admitted killing seven people in execution-style gun attacks before his death in a police siege.
Abdelkader reportedly told police after the attacks he was "proud" of him.
The men's mother was released without charge on Friday evening.
Investigators are trying to establish if Merah, a 23-year-old French citizen of Algerian descent, acted alone.
Crucial questions include how Merah, a petty criminal, was able to amass an arsenal of weapons and rent a car without any clear source of income.
He reportedly told police during the siege he had bought weapons for 20,000 euros (£16,700; $24,400) using money taken through break-ins and hold-ups.
Merah, who described himself as an al-Qaeda member, carried out three attacks, killing three soldiers before shooting dead three children and a teacher at a Jewish school.
He recorded the shootings on a video camera strapped to his body.
Remembrance marches were being held on Saturday for two of the paratroopers killed by Merah.
