Russia, China block UN action on Syria
Western and Arab countries responded with outrage on Sunday after Russia and China vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution that would have urged Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to give up power.
The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said she was "disgusted" by the vote, which came a day after activists say Syrian forces bombarded the city of Homs, killing more than 200 people in the worst night of bloodshed of the 11-month uprising.
"Any further bloodshed that flows will be on their hands," ambassador Susan Rice said after the Russian-Chinese veto.
Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague said in a statement that the approach by Moscow and Beijing "lets the Syrian people down, and will only encourage President Assad's brutal regime to increase the killing".
Why China, Russia wont condemn Syrian regime
As international leaders express outrage over mass killings in Syria -- and lament the inability to pass a U.N. Security Council resolution denouncing the Syrian regime -- questions linger about the two countries behind the impasse.
On Saturday, China and Russia vetoed a draft resolution that would have demanded Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stop the killing and answer calls aimed at finding a Syrian-led solution to the 11-month crisis.
Analysts say both China and Russia have their reasons to maintain good relations with Syria.
Russia is one of Syria's biggest arms suppliers. And China ranked as Syria's third-largest importer in 2010.
Damascus is the traditional terminus node of the ancient Silk Road. China sees Syria as an important trading hub.
Russia vetoes anti-Assad UN motion
The West and Russia had a major showdown Saturday Feb. 5 over the Arab League resolution calling on Bashar Assad to step down.
It was put to the vote and defeated by Russian and China vetoes.
Its ALL phony, its ALL a sham, pretend!

China says it was forced to veto UN measure on Syria
February 06, 2012
China said Monday it was forced to veto a United Nations vote on Syria because it was called before differences in the proposal were bridged, but denied playing spoiler and said it wants to see an end to violence there.
China and Russia have drawn the wrath of the United States, Europe and much of the Arab world for the weekend veto, which they say blocked a U.N. attempt to end nearly 11 months of bloodshed and raises fears that the violence will escalate.
China says the resolution put undue emphasis on pressuring the Syrian government and prejudged the result of any dialogue between the parties in Syria.
