QUAKE HITS VIET NAM DAM

QUAKE HITS VIET NAM DAM
September 6, 2012  Quakes hit hydropower plant area in Quang Nam
A series of tremors, along with underground explosions that were heard from above and caused walls to crack, occurred yesterday in the area of the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant in Quang Nam Province’s Bac Tra My District. Experts at the plant are analyzing data collected from earthquake observation stations in the area but have yet to announce how powerful the quake was on the Richter scale, said Tran Van Hai, head of the Management Board of Hydropower Project 3. The incident happened from 7 to 9 pm Monday at the Bac Tra My Town and several communes nearby, causing thousands of locals to rush out of their houses in panic after they heard loud blasts and found the ground shaken, houses’ walls cracked and things inside the houses falling. Ho Van Loi, chairman of the Tra Doc commune People’s Committee said his house’s floor was shaken five times during last night, with the most powerful seismic intensity occurring at 9 pm. Such quakes have taken place continuously in the past five days in Bac Tra My, but the one last night has been the strongest since the hydropower plant began storing water in its reservoir, Dang Phong, chairman of the District People’s Committee, said. “Residents are very worried about their safety. We will report the situation at the meeting scheduled on September 4 between district authorities and the Ministry of Construction to discuss measures to prevent leakage at the plant’s dam,” Phong said. As previously reported, residents in the downstream area of the hydropower plant have been living in fear after cracks and water leakage were found in the dam of the plant, whose reservoir could contain 730 million cubic meters of water and is among the largest in central Vietnam.

I see no recording of this anywhere else.  They may have felt the Philippine and Indonesian quakes.  Both VERY STRONG.

Song Tranh dam left undamaged by quake
A recent earthquake that hit Tra My District in central Quang Nam Province did not have any impact on the Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant, Nguyen Van Hai, director of the hydropower plant management board, affirmed yesterday.
According to the Institute of Geophysics, the 4.2 Richter earthquake shook the region on Monday at 8pm and the seismic focus was at the depth of 7.3km.

Vietnam’s largest hydropower dam allegedly causes more earthquakes
September 04, 2012
Local residents in the central province of Quang Nam were unable to sleep Monday night as earthquakes caused by the notorious Song Tranh 2 hydropower dam rocked the area once again.
There were 4 quakes in total between 9 and 10:30 pm, locals reported.
They said each quake lasted for more than two minutes, causing furniture to fall, which worried residents too much to remain indoors.
Dang Phong, chairman of Bac Tra My District, said the strongest of the quakes, which measured 4.2 on the Richter Scale, was the strongest so far among those which have been caused by the country’s largest dam.
Scientists said water from the reservoir is being absorbed into earthquake faults in the area and that is what is causing the seismic activity and explosions, which can be easily heard as they occur just below the earth's surface.

Strongest-ever earthquake hits Quang Nam(Vietnam)

10/23/12

An earthquake, the strongest since 1957, occurred last night in Quang Nam Province’s Bac Tra My District, where the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant is located, panicking thousands of local residents.

A series of tremors measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale broke out in the district at 9:42 pm Monday and lasted for about three seconds, said Le Van Tuan, chief of the district People’s Committee’s Secretariat.

Thousands of locals rushed out of their houses in panic after they heard loud blasts and felt the ground shaking, houses’ walls cracking, and things inside the houses falling, Tuan said.
“Many items on a table in my house fell down to the floor and my children cried and screamed when hearing explosions that sounded like the sounds of bombings,” he said.

This quake could be felt by people living in districts nearby such as Nam Tra My, Tien Phuoc, Phuoc Son and Nong Son, he added.

Vu Duc Toan, deputy head of the Hydropower Management Board No. 3, said that the earthquake accelerator installed at the hydropower plant area indicated a ground acceleration of 98 cm/s2. This data has been reported to the Global Physics Institute.

The quake’s statistics are being handled by the Institute and the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, Toan said.

Last night Dr Nguyen Hong Phuong, deputy director of the center, confirmed that the quake was 4.6 degrees and its epicenter was 7 km below ground.

This is the strongest quake to hit the area since 1957, the center said.

The second strongest quake in the area so far occurred on September 3, measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale.

As previously reported, the first earthquake observation station in the district was put into operation on October 19. More than 20 quakes have occurred in the region in the past several months.

This is the first among five planned stations to be built in the district to monitor such quakes, which experts say have been induced by the plant’s reservoir, authorities said.

The station will record all seismic developments of any reservoir-induced earthquakes, irrespective of how minor they are, in the area, said Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, head of the Global Physics Institute.
