Polish president among 132 dead in jet crash in Russia
10 April 2010 Death toll is 97, not 130 as first reported
About 130 people die in crash of plane carrying Poland president Lech Kaczynski and his wife.
The entire top military brass were on the plane. The Polish military services are decapitated.
Tupolev Tu-154 plane goes down en route to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, when the Soviets killed thousands of Poles.
Families of those killed at Katyn were also on board the plane.
The plane reportedly hits trees in thick fog on its approach to a Russian airport, and crashed in Smolensk region of Russia, then caught fire about 1.3 miles from the airport.
Several other government figures, including the army chief of staff, were also thought to have been on board.
Kaczynski's wife Maria, Central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek and the chief of Poland's military Franciszek Gagor were among those on board.
In the COMMENTS here, one man said this crash is SUSPICIOUS.
I think so too!
I have a bad feeling this was caused intentionally, not an accident.
Watch Russia move in FAST and take Poland.

Polish president killed in plane crashPolish president killed in plane crash
April 10, 2010 Polish President Lech Kaczynski was killed early Saturday along with his wife, several top military officials, and the head of the national bank when their plane crashed at a western Russian airport, officials said.
"There are no survivors," said Sergey Antufyev, the governor of Smolensk, where the plane was trying to land when it crashed.
A spokesman for Poland's Foreign Ministry, Piotr Paszkowski, said earlier that it was probable that everyone on board was killed.
Information varied on how many people were on board the plane. The Polish Foreign Ministry and Defense Ministry said 89 people died in the crash. The Russian Investigation Committee said there were 132 people on the plane.
Parliament Speaker Bronislaw Komorowski took over as acting president and declared it "a time for national mourning."
The president, 60, had been traveling with the Polish delegation to Russia for the 70th anniversary of the massacre of Polish prisoners of war in the village of Katyn. Some 20,000 Polish officers were executed there during World War II.
The Polish military plane originated in Warsaw, the Polish Defense Ministry said. It was approaching the airport at Smolensk -- just a few miles east of Katyn -- and probably hit some trees at the end of the runway, Paszkowski said.
The Investigation Committee of the Russian prosecutor's office said the plane, a Tupolev-154, was trying to land in heavy fog.
Kaczynski's Law and Justice Party released a list of some of those it said were killed in the crash. They included Aleksander Szczyglo, the head of the National Security Office; Jerzy Szmajdzinski, the deputy parliament speaker; Andrzej Kremer, the deputy foreign minister; and Gen. Franciszek Gagor, the army chief of staff, according to the party.
"The entire top military brass, including the chief of defense and all the services, were on the plane," said Tomas Valasek, of the Center for European Reform. "If that is true, then you're looking at a situation, in effect, of the decapitation of the military services."
Pictures from the scene showed parts of the airplane charred and strewn through a wooded area. Some pieces, including one of the wheel wells, were upside down.
The crash happened around 10:50 a.m. (2:50 a.m. ET) on the outskirts of the town of Pechorsk, just outside of Smolensk, the Investigation Committee said.
"This is a time of great national tragedy," Komorowski told reporters. "At this time there are no political differences, left or right. This is a time of national mourning."
Kaczynski had been president since December 2005 after he defeated rival Donald Tusk in the second round of voting. Tusk is currently prime minister.
Crowds gathered at the presidential palace in Warsaw to lay flowers and light candles for the president, whose death raises questions for Poland's government.
"Everything has changed today," said Jan Mikruta, a reporter for TV Polsat.
Tusk and Polish Cabinet ministers were holding a special meeting Saturday morning to discuss the situation, said a spokeswoman for the Polish Parliament, who declined to be named because she was not authorized to speak publicly.
Elections must now be held within 60 days, said Dariusz Rosati, Poland's former foreign minister.
"There is going to be a huge gap in public life in Poland," said resident Magdalena Hendrysiak. "The most important people are dead."
At the same time, Hendrysiak said, the president's death may have a unifying effect.
"I think it will be one of those situations that no one will care about their political preferences," she told CNN. "I think we're going to end up as pretty united in the face of such a tragedy."
Valasek pointed out, however, that the Polish president is the head of state, not head of government -- meaning essential services will continue to run.
"The role of the Polish president is not quite ceremonial ... he has some very real powers, but at the end of the day, the day-to-day running of the government is in the hands of the prime minister and the (cabinet) ministers," Valasek said. "Continuity is assured in ways that would not necessarily be assured in the case of the death of the U.S. president."
Condolences poured in from around the world Saturday, including from British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who was campaigning in Scotland.
Brown praised the contributions Kaczynski had made to Polish independence.
"This is a horrible tragedy," said Philip Crowley, the U.S. assistant secretary for public affairs. "We extend to the people of Poland our deepest condolences."
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he learned of Kaczynski's death with "great emotion and a deep sadness" and expressed his sympathy to the families of the president and other victims.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai also expressed his condolences, as did the chairman of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
"I offer my deepest condolences to the Polish people and to the families of those killed in this tragic accident. Our hearts go out to you in this difficult time," said OSCE Chairman Kaunat Saudabayev, who is also the secretary of state and foreign minister of Kazakhstan.
Valasek said the crash is a tragic coincidence, since the Polish officials were on their way to commemorate the deaths of top Polish officials at Katyn 70 years ago.
"The very fact that he was on his way to (commemorate) the massacre suggested that Polish-Russian relations, which of course had been very poor over the past 20 years, were on the way towards improvement," Valasek said. "A shared tragedy of this sort could give a boost to further improvement in Polish-Russian relations, which ... were on the mend, and this tragedy might accelerate that trend."
Intentional Plane Crash?I was thinking that Poland was one of the countries that they were going to set up the missile defense shield in and that Russia was very opposed to it. Maybe this is their revenge and a way to stop these plans from continuing. Now I bet Russia has in their sites on putting the old Soviet Union back together.

April 19 UPDATE - THERE WERE NOT 4 attempts - only ONE.
THIS WAS MURDER - ASSASSINATION!
UPDATED 10th April 2010, evening
Pilot error blamed as witnesses report three or four attempts to land in thick fog
Army chief and national bank supremo also killed in disaster
PM calls emergency Cabinet meeting as shocked crowds gather
Polish president Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria have been killed after their plane crashed on approach to Smolensk airport in western Russia.
There were conflicting reports today of the number of people on board the flight. Russian news agencies reported at least 88 people died in the crash near Smolensk airport in western Russia, citing the Russian Emergencies Ministry. They reported 132 people were aboard the Tupolev Tu-154.
But Polish officials said 88 people were on board when the plane crashed. Sky News reported 96 dead.
Pilot error has been blamed for the tragedy after it emerged he turned down the opportunity to land at an alternative runway in thick fog. Witnesses said the pilot made three or four attempts to land before crashing into woodland nearby.
According to reports, the pilot accelerated as the plane came in to land and at that point lost contact with air traffic control.
As news of the tragedy spread, Prime Minister Donald Tusk called an extraordinary meeting of his Cabinet and the national flag was lowered to half-staff at the presidential palace, where people gathered to lay flowers and light candles.
Black ribbons appeared in some windows in the Polish capital.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has been put in charge of a commission investigating the crash, the Kremlin said.
The governor of the Smolensk region, where the crash took place about 11am (0700 GMT), said no one survived.
'The Polish presidential plane did not make it to the runway while landing. Tentative findings indicate that it hit the treetops and fell apart," Sergei Anufriev said on state news channel Rossiya-24. "Nobody has survived the disaster.'
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he had ordered a two-minute silence at noon (1000GMT) Sunday.
'The contemporary world has not seen such a tragedy,' he said, offering his "deepest sympathy" to the president's family.
Tusk noted that condolences were pouring in from around the world and noted that "the first came from (Russian) Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev."
Also among the victims was Anna Walentynowicz, whose firing in August 1980 from the Lenin Shipyards in Gdansk sparked a workers' strike that spurred the eventual creation of the Solidarity freedom movement. She went on to be a prominent member.
The crash occurred about 1.5 km from Smolensk airport in foggy conditions.
State news channel Rossiya-24 showed footage from the crash site, with pieces of the plane scattered widely amid leafless trees and small fires burning in woods shrouded with fog. A tail fin with the Polish red and white colours stuck up from the debris.
Poland's president is commander-in-chief of its armed forces but the position's domestic duties are chiefly symbolic.
The president and his wife were on their way to attend a World War Two memorial service. Kaczynski's wife, Maria, was an economist. They had a daughter, Marta, and two granddaughters.
A Polish government official said the head of the Polish army and the head of the presidential administration were also on board the plane, along with the president's wife and families of other senior officials.
The Army chief of staff, Gen. Franciszek Gagor, National Bank President Slawomir Skrzypek and Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer were on the passenger list.
'The plane caught fire after the crash. Teams began attempting to pull out passengers from the badly damaged airplane,' said a Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman in Warsaw.
Poland's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Piotr Paszkowski, said there were 89 people on the passenger list but one person had not shown up.
'We still cannot fully understand the scope of this tragedy and what it means for us in the future. Nothing like this has ever happened in Poland,' Paszkowski said. 'We can assume with great certainty that all persons on board have been killed.'
The Queen led tributes today to the president and his wife in a message of condolence where she described her "sorrow" and sent her "deepest sympathy" to the government and the people of Poland.
The monarch's message to the Polish Speaker Bronislaw Komorowski read: 'It is with the deepest sorrow that I have learnt of the death of President Lech Kaczynski and First Lady Madame Kaczynska.
'On this sad occasion I recall President Kaczynski's long and distinguished public service and his role in the Solidarity movement.
'The deaths of many other of Poland's leading figures, including former President in Exile Kaczorowski, only serve to deepen this tragedy.
'I send my deepest sympathy to you and to the whole Polish nation.'
The Prince of Wales - who went to Poland on a royal visit last month - also sent an official message of condolence to Warsaw today.
In a statement, Clarence House said: 'The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall are shocked and deeply upset by the tragic death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, Madame Kaczynski and many others at Smolensk airport this morning.
'As guests of the President and his wife only a few weeks ago, their Royal Highnesses experienced at first hand their generous hospitality during what was a very memorable and enjoyable visit to Poland.
'The Prince and Duchess's thoughts and prayers are with the President's family, the loved ones of those killed, and all Polish people on this tragic day.'
Prime Minister Gordon Brown paid tribute to Kaczynski while on the campaign trail in his home constituency of Kirkcaldy.
'I think the whole world will be saddened and in sorrow as a result of the tragic death in a plane crash of President Kaczynski and his wife Maria and the party that were with them,' he said.
'We know the difficulties that Poland has gone through, the sacrifices that he himself made as part of the Solidarity movement.
'We know the contribution he made to the independence and the freedom of Poland.
'I think at a time like this we also remember a family in mourning and large numbers of people who died and a whole country that will be shocked and saddened by what has happened.
'I have met President Kaczynski on a few occasions, I have talked with him recently.
'I think every leader around the world will be sending their sympathies to the people of Poland.'
Tory leader David Cameron expressed his sadness at the news, saying it was a "very black day for Poland".
Scores of senior figures from the Polish government and military are also believed to have died in the crash near the city of Smolensk in Russia this morning.
'I knew President Kaczynski personally,' Mr Cameron told reporters on the campaign trail.
'He was a very brave Polish patriot who stood up for freedom.
'He suffered hugely under communism and always stood up for his beliefs, and for his great faith in his country.
'It's a huge loss. It's a very black day for Poland indeed, and we must be thinking of all those who have suffered.'
The president and his wife were on their way to a memorial service for the victims of the Katyn massacre which, in 1940, saw thousands of Polish prisoners of war murdered (primarily military officers), intellectuals, policemen, and other public servants by the Soviet NKVD.
Polish-Russian relations had been improving of late after being poisoned for decades over the Katyn massacre.
Russia never has formally apologized for the murders of some 22,000 Polish officers, but Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's decision to attend a memorial ceremony earlier this week in the forest near Katyn was seen as a gesture of goodwill toward reconciliation.
The presidential Tu-154 was at least 20 years old. Polish officials have long discussed replacing the planes that carry the country's leaders but said they lacked the funds.
According to the Aviation Safety Network, there have been 66 crashes involving Tu-154s, including six in the past five years. The Russian carrier Aeroflot recently withdrew its Tu-154 fleet from service.
Kaczynski, 60, became president in December 2005 after defeating Tusk in that year's presidential vote.
The nationalist conservative was the twin brother of Poland's opposition leader, former Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
Kaczynski had said he would seek a second term in presidential elections this fall. He was expected to face an uphill struggle against Parliament speaker Bronislaw Komorowski, the candidate of Tusk's governing Civic Platform party.
According to the constitution, Komorowski would take over presidential duties.
Piotr Winczorek, law professor and constitutional expert, said: 'The speaker of the parliament takes over presidential responsibilities. In fact, Bronislaw Komorowski should already take the office.
'The speaker has two weeks to announce new presidential election and they have to take place within two months from the announcement. There is no room for manoeuvre here.
'The constitution says the central bank governor is named by the president and approved by the parliament. The parliament is incomplete at the moment and should be filled before the central bank governor is named.'
Jacek Wasilewski, professor at SWPS (Higher School of Social Psychology), added: 'The political consequences will be long term and possibly will change the entire future landscape of Polish politics.
'Of course Law and Justice has taken the greatest blow from this event, but it does not make Civic Platform's life any easier. It is hard to be opposed to someone who suffered such a great loss.
'I don't think the political calendar will change much as it pretty much set by the Polish law. I cannot imagine postponement or cancellation of the Presidential and local elections.'
Poland, a nation of 38 million people, is by far the largest of the 10 formerly communist countries that have joined the European Union in recent years.
Last year, Poland was the only EU nation to avoid recession and posted economic growth of 1.7 percent.
It has become a firm U.S. ally in the region since the fall of communism - a stance that crosses party lines.
The country sent troops to the U.S.-led war in Iraq and recently boosted its contingent in Afghanistan to some 2,600 soldiers.
U.S. Patriot missiles are expected to be deployed in Poland this year. That was a Polish condition for a 2008 deal - backed by both Kaczynski and Tusk - to host long-range missile defence interceptors.
The deal, which was struck by the Bush administration, angered Russia and was later reconfigured under President Barack Obama's administration.
Under the Obama plan, Poland would host a different type of missile defence interceptors as part of a more mobile system and at a later date, probably not until 2018.
Kaczynski is the first serving Polish leader to die since exiled World War II-era leader Gen. Wladyslaw Sikorski in a plane crash off Gibraltar in 1943.
U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said on Saturday: 'This is a horrible tragedy for Poland and we extend to the people of Poland our deepest condolences.'
Neighbouring Germany's foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, said he was "shocked and full of sadness" at Kaczynski's death.
'All the German people are mourning with our Polish neighbours,' Westerwelle said during a visit to South Africa.

Russia begins probe into Polish president's deathRussia begins probe into Polish president's death
Russia says Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will personally head the investigation into an aeroplane crash that killed Poland's president.
A total of 96 people were on board the plane that crashed near the western Russian city of Smolensk, all of whom are believed to be dead.
Polish president Lech Kaczynski was on board the Russian-built Tupolev 154 jet when it went down in heavy fog near a military airport.
Russian authorities have already said they suspect pilot error in the crash, near Smolensk, in Western Russia.
There are reports the jet made several attempted landings before the crash.
Also on board were leading members of Poland's political elite, including the army chief of staff and the governor of the central bank.
Poland's acting head of state has declared a week of mourning.
"We are united - there is no [political] left or right - we are united in national mourning," said Bronislaw Komorowski, Poland's parliamentary speaker who took charge of presidential duties after Mr Kaczynski's death.
Authorities have found one of the flight recorders of the plane, news agencies reported.
"One of the flight recorders has been found at the scene of the crash,"
the Interfax news agency quoted a regional government source as saying.
The RIA-Novosti news agency reported that a dirt-covered orange device shown in television footage at the crash scene
was a flight recorder from the Tu-154 jet.
Such recorders are often called "black boxes" and are used to reconstruct the chain of events that led to a crash.
Kaczynski battled communismKaczynski battled communism
Poland President Lech Kaczynski was a battler.
He was a fervent Catholic who battled communism during the Cold War and matured into a staunchly conservative politician.
April 11, 2010 - By Jeffrey Fleishman
Kaczynski and his identical twin, Jaroslaw, rose to the top of Polish politics in 2005 when their Law and Justice Party swept to power. With Lech as president and his brother as prime minister, the snowy-haired siblings with boyish faces led their country to the right.
Despite Poland's membership in the European Union, Lech Kaczynski was adamant that Warsaw not become entangled in continental politics and bureaucracy. His close alliance with the United States agitated European leaders, especially during the George W. Bush administration, which was deeply unpopular in much of Europe.
The Cold War left a deep imprint on Kaczynski, who until his death at 60 remained suspicious of Moscow's ambitions in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. He supported democracy movements in Ukraine and Georgia, and believed that expanding the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to former republics of the Soviet Union and its onetime satellites was a crucial deterrent to any Russian aggression.
At home, Kaczynski, who was mayor of Warsaw before becoming president, sought to expose former communists and cleanse what he and his brother regarded as pervasive liberalism. He took a hard line against homosexuality and often assailed salacious magazines and TV shows.
His critics regarded him as a politically dangerous mix of Polish nationalism and religious conservatism. But for many Poles, remembering his courageous stand with Solidarity leader Lech Walesa and others in the movement that challenged Poland's communist regime, Kaczynski was a touchstone of the post-World War II era.
Supporters believed his policies were what a proud yet insecure Poland needed to emerge as a strong political voice between Western Europe and Warsaw's onetime master. But Kaczynski was expected to have to fight hard for reelection this year.
Born June 18, 1949, in Warsaw, the Kaczynski twins came to public attention in the 1960s as mischievous boys in the allegorical film "The Two Who Stole the Moon."
Their family history was replete with stories of Polish bravery.
Their father was a fighter with the Polish resistance during World War II; their mother nursed wounded soldiers.
In the 1970s, the brothers joined the anti-communist underground and later Walesa's Solidarity movement. Kaczynski was not a charismatic speaker, but his steely disdain for the communist era and populist sound bites won over much of the country.
"We must turn the state around to face its citizens," he said during his campaign for the presidency. "The scale of the repair will be so great that Poland will become a new republic."
His brother stepped down as prime minister in 2007 but remains chairman of the Law and Justice Party.
Kaczynski's wife, Maria, an economist, died with him in the crash.
The couple is survived by their daughter.

Poland no longer needs IMF credit line
MARCH 29 2010 The central bank said it could instead provide the IMF with a loan to “help other countries overcome the effects of the global crisis.“
Poland's economy is stable and no longer needs its 21.8-billion dollar (16.2-billion euro) credit line from the International Monetary Fund, the Polish central bank said on Monday.
"The situation with the Polish economy and the financial system is sufficiently good ... that it is not necessary to ask the IMF for a further extension of the flexible credit line," the bank said in a statement.
The central bank said it could instead provide the IMF with a loan to "help other countries overcome the effects of the global crisis."
The finance ministry, however, insisted it still wanted to have a reserve at hand if the economy ran into fresh headwinds.
"We are expecting a good deal of shocks in the coming months.
There is still a necessity to ensure that Poland has a supplementary reserve," Deputy Finance Minister Dominik Radziwill said.
The credit line for Poland was approved in May 2009 and extended for six months in November 2009.
It was intended to reassure investors and allow Poland to access credit easily if it needed it, which ultimately it did not.
The announcement came during a visit to Warsaw by the head of the IMF, Dominique Strauss-Kahn.
Poland was the only member of the 27-nation European Union to have experienced growth in 2009 and the IMF this month forecast that its economy will expand by 2.75 percent this year and by 3.25 percent in 2011.
Poland is a former communist-ruled country that joined the EU in 2004.
The IMF introduced the new system of flexible credit lines in 2009 as a safeguard against external shocks during the global economic crisis. Poland and Mexico both secured credit lines under this scheme whilst other countries needed loan arrangements.

April 19 UPDATE - THERE WERE NOT 4 attempts - only ONE.
THIS WAS MURDER - ASSASSINATION!
13th April 2010
The Russian government prevented the Polish president's plane from landing four times to divert him from a ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, according to an MP.
Artur Gorski said the Russians 'came up with some dubious reasons' that the aircraft couldn't land because they feared President Leck Kaczynski's presence would overshadow a similar event hosted by the Russian prime minister a few days before.
And their alleged plan ended in disaster when the Polish pilots made one final and disastrous attempt to land, killing Mr Kaczynski, his wife, and 94 others on board the plane.
One version of events says that the plane approached the airport four times, because every time the Russians refused it permission to land - they wanted to send the plane with the president to an airport in Moscow or Minsk,' Mr Gorski claimed in an interview published in the newspaper Nasz Dziennik.
'They came up with some dubious reasons: that there was fog over the airport, and that the navigation system didn't work as it was under renovation, and that airport had a short landing strip.'
The claims were made as shocking new details emerged of the final minutes of the flight before it crashed into a Russian forest on Saturday morning.
One of the Russian air traffic controllers involved in the tragedy said he believes the Polish air force pilot Arkadiusz Protasiuk, 36, was under severe pressure 'to land at any cost' so that the president would not miss the commemoration of the death of 22,000 Poles slaughtered by Stalin.
But he claims there were also serious language problems between the control tower at the military airport near Smolensk and the crew as the aircraft began its descent, and final approach, 'without our permission'.
The crew failed to report to the ground their altitude readings, said Colonel Anatoly Muraviev, a former pilot.
He believes the captain 'was desperate to land because of the high ranking passengers he was carrying. It killed both the crew and the passengers.'
It was known that Mr Kaczynski once fired a flight crew when they refused to land at Tbilisi - and flew to another airport, he said.
'Now try to imagine yourself in chief pilot's shoes. Fear, false shame, thinking that going to another airport is a disgrace - all this led to the fact that the crew died and killed all the others. I am a former pilot myself, I understand all this very well.'
The tapes of the conversations with the flight crew have not been released - so it is unclear if there is specific evidence of an order to the captain from either the president or the military top brass on board.
Polish investigators said they will probe whether there were 'any suggestions made to the pilots' from other people aboard the plane.
Colonel Muraviev claimed there were a number of specific causes of the crash - 'weather conditions, maybe a mistake of the pilot who did not watch his altitude, and also the pilot's wish to land at any cost'.
He said the controllers and flight crew stumbled in Russian and broken English to understand each other in the final decisive seconds of the flight.
Col Muraviev claimed that the fog 'was worsening' as the Polish president's plane came into land. One flight had landed earlier but another had been redirected to Moscow.
Of Kaczynski's flight, he said: 'At first it was descending OK, according to the rules, no problems. Soon our air traffic controllers began to worry. The head of our group three times ordered the pilots to stop this attempt to land, and try one more time, while also preparing to fly to another airport because of bad visibility.
'The crew did not listen to him. So the traffic control warned them about bad visibility and the necessity to fly to another airport.
'The crew did not obey, so the controllers had only one thing to do - to carry on leading in the plane and see what happens. There was only one attempt to land and the plane crashed.'
Because it was a civilian flight, they did not have the authority to order them to another airport, he said.
He said 'mainly we spoke Russian to the crew, partly bad English. Understanding was hard.'
The Polish pilots 'began to land without our permission' and 'did not report to us with their altitude data', he added.
Another controller Pavel Plyusnin confirmed the understanding was '50-50' as the plane approached its tragic end.
'It was hard to guess here if the pilot understood us properly,' said Col Muraviev. 'The language barrier did not help of course. I think it could have affected the result of this flight along with other circumstances.'
The Polish air force yesterday defended father-of-two Captain Protasiuk, saying he 'often flew with the president and other VIPs'.
A spokesman said it was 'ruled out' that the president could have forced the pilot to land at Smolensk.
The body of Poland's first lady Maria Kaczynska was identified yesterday by her wedding ring - with her husband's name inscribed on the inside - and the colour of her finger nails. Many of the bodies are so badly mangled they will require DNA matching.
Air crash's high impact on Polish politicsAir crash's high impact on Polish politics
Wednesday, 14 April 2010 - BBC
The plane crash which killed the Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, and dozens of senior public figures will have a major impact on Poland's political scene.
The most obvious result is that it triggers early presidential elections, which must be held before the end of June.
They were scheduled to take place in October - and although Mr Kaczynski had not publicly announced he would run for a second term, it was widely assumed he would.
The former president's twin, Jaroslaw - himself a former prime minister - leads the country's main opposition party, Law and Justice, and Lech was its natural candidate despite the fact that opinion polls consistently showed he would lose.
The plane crash did not only kill the president, it touched all the main political parties - but it had the largest impact on the Law and Justice political camp.
It has not caused a power vacuum, however. In Poland executive power lies with the government. Under the constitution, the 57-year-old Speaker of the lower house of parliament, Bronislaw Komorowski, is now acting president and it is his task to announce the date of the elections.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski stands next to the empty seats of parliamentarians killed in the plane crsh
Jaroslaw Kaczynski has not said if he will run in his brother's place
Those elections may be influenced by the unprecedented scale of the disaster. The profoundly shocking manner in which it occurred has heightened Poles' sense of grieving, and caused a national outpouring of sympathy for the victims and their families.
Jacek Zakowski, a leading columnist for Polityka magazine, is not so sure, however, that this sympathy will translate into votes for the opposition party.
"I think what people are expressing right now is deep sorrow concerning not only the president and his wife but for the entire tragedy. Every Pole can find someone on that plane he likes. To try to convert this into political gain would be a risky game and could provoke people's anger," he says.
It is not clear whom Law and Justice will appoint as its presidential candidate, although at least one of its MPs has said Jaroslaw should run on a platform of continuing his brother's work in office.
Deep in grief, 60-year-old Jaroslaw Kaczynski has not made any public comments about his party's plans.
Whomever the party chooses will come up against Mr Komorowski, who is the governing party, Civic Platform's candidate.
Mourners outside Poland's Presidential Palace
The tragedy has united the nation in mourning
That means Mr Komorowski has the delicate task of leading the nation through the period of national mourning and announcing the date for elections he hopes to win.
According to many polls published before the tragedy Mr Komorowski, who has been endorsed by Lech Walesa, Poland's legendary anti-communist activist and former leader of the Solidarity movement, was likely to be the winner of the elections.
A former defence minister, Mr Komorowski, is the son of a count and is distantly related to Princess Mathilde of Belgium.
A father of five, he met his wife, Anna, through the Scouting movement. During the communist era he was an opposition activist, publishing an underground magazine, and he was interned when the authorities introduced martial law in 1981.
For most analysts Mr Komorowski remains the favourite to cement his position as president.
Both the Law and Justice Party and the main left-wing party, the SLD, lost their candidates to the tragedy.
It will be a short campaign and one influenced, at least initially, by the solemn mood in the nation, which has provoked political unity unseen since the death of the Polish Pope, John Paul II, five years ago.
However, the first cracks have already appeared over the family's decision to bury Mr Kaczynski and his wife in Poland's national shrine, Wawel Cathedral in Krakow.
Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of Krakow on Tuesday night, some holding banners saying the late president should not be buried alongside the nation's kings, saints, national heroes such as Tadeusz Kosciuszko and the father of Poland's modern independence, Marshall Jozef Pilsudski, and the Polish bard, Adam Mickiewicz.
Gazeta Wyborcza, called the family's decision "hasty and emotional", adding the natural location for the couple's burial would be in Warsaw alongside previous presidents in either the city's cathedral or Powazki cemetery.
Some commentators believe the decision could backfire on Jaroslaw Kaczynski if he does decide to run for president.
Device spurs questions in Polish crashDevice spurs questions in Polish crash
April 14, 2010
The Polish jet that crashed short of a runway in fog, killing that nation's president and other top leaders,
was equipped with a safety device that warns pilots when they get too close to the ground, the device's manufacturer said Tuesday.
The existence of the device deepens the mystery of why the jet struck woods and exploded as pilots attempted to land Saturday at a Russian military airport, aviation safety experts said.
If the safety device was working properly, it would be the first such crash of an aircraft equipped with the system since its introduction in the late 1990s.
The Russian-built Tupolev TU-154 had been equipped with a Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS) made by Universal Avionics Systems of Tucson, said company spokesman John Hamby.
He said the company could not discuss the investigation into the crash or other details.
TAWS devices contain computerized maps of the world and issue warnings whenever aircraft come too close to mountain tops, radio towers or any other obstruction.
Accidents in which a functioning airplane flew into the ground had been the leading cause of deaths around the world.
The devices, required on commercial aircraft since 2005, have virtually wiped out such crashes. If a jet gets too low, the TAWS issues a whooping siren and a recorded voice demands pilots "pull up."
The fact that the jet had a TAWS device "opens more questions than it answers," said John Cox, a safety consultant and former accident investigator.
"I really would like to know what was going on in that flight deck because no matter what kind of pressure other pilots have been under or what kind of weather they encountered, no pilot has ignored a TAWS warning.
What is so different about this plane that it would break that chain?" Cox said.
Bill Voss, president of the non-profit Flight Safety Foundation, said that the crash may highlight a weakness in the TAWS.
Maps of the U.S. and other developed nations are highly accurate, but gaps exist in the maps for countries such as Russia and in the developing world, Voss said.
President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, Maria Kaczynska, and other prominent Poles were on their way to Smolensk in western Russia, where they were to attend a memorial service for thousands of Polish soldiers who were executed 70 years ago. All 96 people aboard the jet died.
There is no evidence that engine failure brought down the plane, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said.
The airport was shrouded in fog and controllers advised the pilots to divert, according to Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.
The Speech the Polish President Never GaveThe Speech the Polish President Never Gave
Prepared for Delivery April 10, 2010
Dear Representatives of the Katyn families!
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen!
In April 1940 more that 21 thousand of Polish prisoners from NKVD cages and prisons were murdered. That genocide crime was committed of Stalin's will, by order of the supreme authorities of the Soviet Union.
The alliance of the Third Reich and the USSR, Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact and the aggression against Poland on September 17, 1939 found its astonishing culmination in the Katyn massacre.
Not only in the forests of Katyn but also in Twer, Kharkov and other known and still unknown tragic places the citizens of II Rzeczpospolita (the Second Polish republic) were killed. These were people who were creating the foundations of our statehood, who were relentless in the service to our Motherland.
At the same time the families of the killed and the thousands of pre-war borderland citizens were deported to the depth of the Soviet Union where their silent sufferings were marking the way of Polish Eastern Golgotha.
Katyn was the most tragic station on this way. Polish officers, clergymen, civil servants, policemen, border guard and prison service officials were exterminated without legal proceedings and court sentences.
They became the victims of the war that had not been announced.
They were murdered with the humiliation of the rights and conventions of the civilized world.
Their dignity as the soldiers, Poles and human beings was trampled.
Death caves were supposed to hide the bodies and the truth about the genocide forever.
The world was never supposed to learn.(in Polish text) The families of the victims were unvested of rights for public mourning, sorrow and dignified commemoration of the closest.
The soil had covered the traces of the crime and the lie was supposed to erase it from peoples' memory.
The hiding of the truth about Katyn - the effect of the decision of those who led to the crime, became one of the communist policy fundamentals in the after-war Poland: it became the founding lie of PRL (Polish People's Republic).
That was the time when for the memory and the truth about Katyn one could pay a very high price. Nevertheless, the families of the murdered and other brave people were true to that memory, they were defending it and were passing it to the next generations of Polish people. They carried it through the times of the communist governments and confided to the fellow-citizens of free and independent Poland. That is why we owe respect and gratitude to all of them and especially to Katyn Families. On behalf of the Republic of Poland I am offering thanks to you as by defending the memory of your closest you have saved so important dimension of our Polish consciousness and identity.
Katyn became the painful wound of Polish history, it also has been poisoning relations between Poles and Russians for long decades. Let us make the Katyn would to finally heal and scar over. We are already on this way. We, the Polish people do appreciate the activities of the Russians during the last years. We have to follow the way that brings our peoples closer to each other. We cannot stop or turn back.
All the circumstances regarding the Katyn crime must be fully investigated and clarified. It is important that guiltlessness of the victims becomes legally confirmed and all the documents regarding the crime are disclosed, so that the lie about Katyn disappears forever from the public sphere. We demand for these steps primarily in memory of the victims and for the respect of the sufferings of their families. We also demand for these activities in the name of common values that must create the foundations of trust and partnership between the neighboring peoples in the whole Europe.
Let us together pay homage to the murdered and let us pray for them. Praise to the heroes! Honour to their memory!
Note how the plume avoids nearly all of the nations occupied by Hitler or Stalin and how the ash reaching Moscow first (the green line)
sits between 20,000 and 35,000 feet — very likely the height at which the Polish jet was cruising before it crashed.
Iceland is an island that emerged from the sea. In scripture, the sea is symbolic of worldly chaos.
The volcanoes there (like those in Hawaii) seldom throw off ash tending, much more often, to spew less-viscous flowing lava.
Ash in scripture is a symbol (according to Conner) of “complete destruction, desolation, mourning and sorrow”.
IS THERE ANY ASSOCIATION BETWEEN "KATYN" AND "KATLA" VOLCANO?

In the meantime, there are reminders of who owns the land and everything on it.
For example, it seems unlikely that a giant ash plume from the Icelandic volcano would curl down over
Moscow like a finger just days after that country’s leadership was implicated in the murder of half the Polish government.

Russian Move Against US in Poland Kills President, Most of Government
April 10, 2010 By Sorcha Faal
First reports on the tragic death of Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, top general, head of their central bank,
and many more top officials in a plane crash in Smolensk, Russia are said by FSB sources reporting to
Prime Minister Putin to have been a “successful decapitation” of that Nation’s leadership putting into power the
speaker of Poland's parliament and a former defense minister Bronislaw Komorowski who unlike Kaczynski has been a long time ally of Moscow.
President Medvedev has set up a commission headed by Prime Minister Putin to investigate this incident and ordered
Russian Minister of Extraordinary Situations Sergey Shoigu to personally supervise all investigative forces on the scene of this catastrophic crash.
Kaczynski and those government officials accompanying him had been in Russia to commemorate the
World War II Katyn Massacre of over 22,000 Polish prisoners of war by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's secret police in 1940.
Putin had also attended this ceremony with his Polish counterpart but failed in his remarks to offer an
apology to Poland or to label this most atrocious of actions a war crime.
As to the crash itself reports are showing that it occurred at 10:50AM local time in Smolensk, which is some 400 kilometers west of Moscow,
where Kaczynski’s plane was attempting to land in thick fog at an airport not equipped with the special anti-fog radar common in the West and was caused by what Russian authorities are calling
“a mistake by the crew during landing maneuvers” and killed all 96 passengers and crew on board.
Most important to note about the loss of Poland’s pro-US government in this “decapitation” move is Moscow’s successful outmaneuvering the Americans once again,
and as we had previously reported on in our April 8th report titled “Russia Moves Against US In Kyrgyzstan, Thailand As World War III Nears”
and with today’s event adds Poland to Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan as previously US backed Nations rolled back into Russia’s orbit.
Potentially catastrophic to American war aims in these latest Russian Great Game moves is the loss of their main air force supply base in
Kyrgyzstan as the new pro-Kremlin leadership in this most vital of Central Asian Nations has begun actions to
eject the United States from their country causing the US military to cancel all flights into their Manus airbase located their.
The last pro-American government established to “contain” Russia that is left standing is Georgia, but from new reports coming from there may not last much longer against Moscow’s onslaught against Obama, and as we can read as reported by Russia’s RIA Novosti News Service:
“Georgian opposition leaders warned the authorities on Thursday that the country could see a Kyrgyz scenario if opposition activists continue to be arrested.
Earlier in the day, police detained eight protesters for blocking a road in the capital, Tbilisi.
The warning came from Zurab Nogaideli, former prime minister and current leader of the For a Fair Georgia public movement; and Koba Davitashvili, the leader of the People's Party.
“A revolution took place in Kyrgyzstan following the arrest of political [opposition] leaders. If [President Mikheil] Saakashvili or [Interior Minister Vano] Merabishvili dare touch any representative of the opposition again, this will be followed by what happened in Kyrgyzstan, and it will be the end of their rule,” Davitashvili said.”
With all of those Nations previously backing the United States moves against Russia now having fallen, or being prepared to fall, the Great Game moves by these major powers to capture and control the vital oil and gas fields of Central Asia, and their associated pipelines to the West, now appears to be Moscow’s to lose.
And it should not go unnoticed that barely 24 hours prior to the killing of Poland’s President that Medvedev launched what is going to be the longest sub-sea pipeline in the world linking the vast oil and gas wealth controlled by Russia to Germany which had been specifically designed to cut-out the now dead Polish government who had dared to back the US against a very dangerous Russian bear.
To what Obama’s response will be against the Russian’s it is not in our knowing, other than to note his past actions which have been described by French President Sarkozy as being those of a “lunatic/madman” and as we had previously reported on and include:
In Turkey where Obama in failing to stop, like all American Presidents before him, his Congress from passing a law blaming that critical Eurasian Nation for the 1915 Armenian genocide left Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan no choice but to recall his ambassador to the US.
In Kyrgyzstan where Obama failed to stop a revolution against the American installed President thus allowing Russian Prime Minister Putin to achieve his goal of revolutionary change for that critical Central Asian Nation and putting in jeopardy the United States war in Afghanistan as the new Kyrgyz government prepares to throw the Americans out of their country thus depriving them of their main air supply route to their already undersupplied troops battling the Afghan Taliban.
In India where by Obama’s failing to support the Indians fight against Pakistani backed Muslim terrorists has caused the second most powerful Asian Nation to turn towards Iran rebuffing all Western attempts to isolate them and instead of their participating in Obama’s Global Nuclear Summit have, instead, agreed to attend the Iranians.
In Pakistan where just this week Obama gave this vital American ally a “public slap on the wrist” by denying to them the same nuclear deal he had previously given to India thus insuring the Pakistani military will cease their support for American troops in Afghanistan battling the Taliban.
In Afghanistan where Obama has engaged in a public war with his ally President Karzai who because so enraged he threatened this past week to change his allegiance from the Americans to the Taliban.
In Israel where Obama has so demoralized and demonized their once most reliable ally that Prime Minister Netanyahu has just announced he will not attend Obama’s Global Nuclear Summit because of his fears that the American President will not keep Egypt and Turkey under control thus threatening the Israelis nuclear supremacy over their Middle Eastern enemies who have sworn to destroy them.
In Brazil where Obama has ordered his Defense Secretary Robert Gates to sign an historic defense agreement with this South American nuclear power whose President, Lula da Silva, has praised Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, slammed Israel, and has announced his intentions to visit Iran next month.
So today where London’s Guardian Newspaper had previously noted that Putin’s Great Game moves had put the US on a their “back feet”,
the killing of Poland’s President and most of their government must have surely pushed them over completely.

Is This How Russians Staged Polish Regime Change? Is This How Russians Staged Polish Regime Change?
April 22, 2010 From an informed reader:
I have read all the evidence available on the net, and a lot seems to contradict, so will solve it.
There were several reasons Russia wanted a regime change in Poland, and the trip was intentionally delayed by Putin -
this information is all on the net. Putin landed about a week before for all the formal ceremonies, and Smolensk is a military airport;
not at all civilian, and the plan was hatched. In fact there was special radar equipment installed for his arrival for a safe landing.
The pilots approaching Smolensk contrary to media reports diverted their landing elsewhere based on the reports given to them
by the tower and probably landed at another military airport in Belarus. Then the old KGB arrested all, and none of these people
will ever see the light on day. It is called the plane-switch, whereby, an identical plane was ordered from somewhere
with four in the cockpit, according to union laws of flight in Russia, to deliver a passenger to Smolensk.
Now, remember that Putin was there about a week before, and his comrades in the tower were given orders to fudge a landing
and cause an intentional crash for the patsies flying in on a very fixed schedule; plan a clean up team to make things look good;
kill anyone in sight; and the black boxes would be fixed to say this or that; propaganda would abound to confuse; and you will all be rewarded.
Henry there is no other explanation, but when my theory is put in place it makes sense.
This would account for why there were no ambulances. The plane was empty except for possibly the pilots who may have been killed.
The same kind of airport "reception" may have greeted the passengers on the 9-11 planes.
How Satanists Say "We're Sorry"
By Henry Makow, Ph.D.
In April 1940, the Soviet NKVD massacred the cream of Poland's nationalist and Christian intelligentsia in the Katyn Forest and elsewhere.
They were slaughtered because they wouldn't agree to join the Communists in fronting a future occupation of Poland.
Seventy years later, on April 10, 2010, the heirs of the NKVD, who still run Russia, probably finished the job.
They probably engineered a plane crash which killed the Polish President, the heads of the army and navy,
the secret service and much of the patriotic wing of the Polish government.
Thus they neatly eliminated one more obstacle to Satanic world government which is descending on the planet like a dreaded darkness.
This is how Satanists say, "We're sorry!"
By repeating the outrage, again and again, until they are finally stopped.
The grounds for suspicion are numerous.
1. The plane was Russian and had recently been "refurbished" in Russia.
One blogger, a pilot, wrote,
"Circumstances, however, point to a major accident or intentional blocking of the control system.
Such a blockade may be intentionally installed so that it launched at a release from the chassis or flaps on the line immediately before landing."
2. As in the Pentagon attack, where there was no wreckage, there were no bodies to be found. Here is the YouTube.
If the plane was at tree height, there would have been survivors. There would have been bodies. There would been luggage.
As with the 9-11 passengers, it is possible the occupants were taken off the plane somewhere else, held or murdered.
On Saturday, Russian authorities said all bodies had been found.
On Monday the story had changed.
A Polish observer wrote: "Given the unlikelihood of Poland's top political and military leaders flying on the same plan, the execution or kidnapping of some of them in Poland cannot be ruled out. To explain their deaths to the general public, their names could have been added to the passenger list. According to media, only 14 bodies could be identified in Moscow with the rest being too badly burned."
A Polish friend wrote to me:"There is no sign of even one body or blood, the Polish cameraman thought that the plane was empty and when he was walking and recording it, he just noticed in shock that the plane was Polish but still didn't know it was President's plane.
"The plane was very low, at the level of trees but they could recognize only 14 bodies, the rest was shattered into pieces or burnt and needed DNA testing.
"They never called any ambulances, no doctors, only one fire engine and immediately they stated that nobody survived.
In this video there is nobody searching for bodies, nobody looking if any people needed help, just fire engine and quite quickly coffins were sent.
They said first that all the bodies were found and then next day, that only 14 could be recognized and they were still searching for bodies.
There is lie after lie. Most of the people on the plane were the president's supporters and belonged to his party, being in strong opposition to prime minister who wasn't there.
The cameraman was caught and pushed away from the place, he said later on TV that there was no chance there could be over 80 bodies ( which was cut off later from TV interview), he hasn't seen even one."
3. The entourage was supposed to travel by train. Suddenly the plans were changed and the generals were induced to join the group.
4. Eye witnesses heard explosions. A bomb? Another said the fog appeared just before the landing and quickly dispersed afterward. The Russians claimed the pilot didn't speak Russian which turned out to be a lie. The New York Times peddled the story that the President made the pilot land against his better judgment. This is the same New York Times that hid Stalin's mass murders from the American people.
My Polish friend writes: "Others say clearly about hearing the noise like from a bomb exploding and then silence.Besides, if there are awful conditions the plane is not allowed to land and the airport is closed for landing.
"It seems, that they were just normally trying to land with no worries and problems and suddenly something happened with the plane that lead all of them to death.
"The most valuable, christian and patriotic head of Poland has been wiped out with one blow, now the way is free, nobody will interrupt big brother any more."
I don't know how the Satanists pulled off 9-11 but I know the official story is not true. The same applies here. Accidents like this don't happen by accident. In one stroke, the globalist Masons, who are behind Putin as well as Obama, removed a thorn in their side.
Yes the Poles are in Afghanistan, but they had been steering an independent course on the Euro and the EU, and they rejected the swine flu vaccine and hysteria. Kaczynski was regarded as skeptical of the European Union while he fought to defend Poland's sovereignty against Brussels and to protect its traditional, conservative values. In 2008, he argued against ratifying the union's Lisbon Treaty for fear its prohibition of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation would become Polish law.
By virtue of its Catholic heritage, Poland is one of the last bastions of civilization in Europe. This will make the struggle of the Polish people, and all those resisting satanic and globalist enslavement, all the more difficult.

Countries that boycotted the funeral:
Germany (a couple hours drive from Poland)
America Barry Soetoro aka Barak Obama went golfing instead. IDIOT
Contrary to disinformation reports, Poland was far enough away from Iceland's volcanic explosion to still have their skies perfectly clear the days surrounding the funeral.
Poland financial government was not going along with IMF and Central Bankers plans, so entire head of Polish gov't assassinated!
Poland was the only country in Europe not to go along with Central Bankers plans,
so Poland was the only country in Europe that is NOT even in a recession, let alone a depression!
Poland refused to increase their currency exchange rate against the Euro, thus continuing to help their country export goods and services.
The message is clear
Poland refused to go along with the New World Order plans to crash everyone's economy in order to usher in the
"solution" a New World Government and New World Currency and New World Dictator.
Polish gov't was assassinated as a result of their lack of cooperation.
- Pilot spoke fluent Russian, so no language barrier at all
- Plane had a collision warning device that would have notified pilot of approaching trees
- Cockpit recorders indicate there was only 1 attempt to land the plane, not 4
- Control Tower instructions led pilot away from landing strip
- Video immediately following crash picked up gun shots by Russian military who were first to reach crash scene (killing anyone remaining alive)
- Moscow confiscated all photos and videos of crash scene made by reporters
- No bodies or any personal belongings at the crash site
- All evidence went to Moscow ........for "cleansing"
Poland is now leader-less.
No doubt, more suitable leaders will be installed, those willing to bow and obey the Central Bankers and Power Elites.
Poland will be absorbed into Euroland and the new world order, with heavy debt and economic decline soon to follow.

NATO code compromise
May 13, 2010 Bill Gertz INSIDE the RING
The recent crash of a Polish military transport that killed most of Warsaw's senior civilian and military leaders was not only a human catastrophe for a key U.S. ally.
NATO sources said that, in addition to the loss of nearly 100 pro-U.S. Polish leaders, the crash provided Moscow with a windfall of secrets.
The crash killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski in western Russia on April 10 and decapitated Poland's military, killing two service chiefs, key military aides and several national security officials,
many of whom were carrying computers and pocket memory sticks that contained sensitive NATO data.
Perhaps the most significant compromise, according to a NATO intelligence source, is that the Russians are suspected of obtaining ultrasecret codes used by NATO militaries for secure satellite communications.
The compromise of the codes is considered what electronic spies call a "break" for Moscow code-breakers. New NATO codes almost certainly were issued to allied militaries immediately after the crash.
But if the Russian electronic intelligence service, known as the Federal Agency of Government Communications and Information, was able to recover and use the communication key code from the wreckage,
electronic spies will be able to decode months' or perhaps years' worth of scrambled communications that are routinely gathered electronically for just such an occasion.
The coded communications, if decrypted, would reveal some of NATO's most intimate secrets, such as plans for defenses and even the identities of agents or allied eavesdropping sources.
Other Polish and NATO secrets also were believed to be aboard the jet, and so far Russia's government is refusing to cooperate fully with
Poland's government in providing details on the cause of the crash, or even to turn over the Polish jet's black boxes.
Additionally, Poland's interim government has not pressed the Russians for answers to questions about the crash,
such as why Russian aviation authorities, without any investigation, ruled that pilot error caused the crash minutes after the jet crashed short of the runway in fog at Russia's Smolensk airport.
Polish security and aviation authorities also were denied access to the crash site.
There is nothing hidden, secret, that will not be revealed, disclosed,
and there is nothing concealed that will not become known and come to light, come into the open.

WHY? Poland was the ONE holdout against the EU.
Non-crew in cockpit in Polish president's plane crash
The wreckage of the Polish presidential plane The plane crashed on its way to a commemoration of the Katyn massacre
Non-crew members were present in the cockpit of a plane that crashed killing the Polish president and more than 90 others, an investigation has found.
One of the non-crew members has been identified, though he or she was not named by officials.
The plane crashed as it tried to land in western Russia on 10 April, killing President Lech Kaczynski and dozens of senior Poles.
The investigation confirmed crew were repeatedly warned about poor weather.
An air traffic control official "warned twice that visibility was 400m (1,312ft) and that were there were no conditions for landing",
said Alexei Morozov, head of the technical commission examining the crash, releasing the preliminary findings of the investigation.
The Tupolev-154 presidential plane was in full working order when it crashed, Mr Morozov said, according to a report by Itar-Tass.
He said systems at the Smolensk airport where the plane was trying to land were also operating normally.
'Cabin door open'
The investigation, which was carried out by the inter-state air committee for the former Soviet Union, ruled out any terrorist attack, explosion, or fire on board the aircraft.
The engines were working up till the moment the plane collided with the ground
The plane was flying Mr Kaczynski and the other passengers to an event commemorating the 1940 Katyn massacre of more than 20,000 Poles by Soviet forces.
Shortly after the crash, there was speculation that passengers may have put pressure on the crew to land in Smolensk, though Polish officials said at the time that there was no evidence to substantiate such claims.
On Wednesday, the head of the inter-state air committee, Tatyana Anodina, said the investigation had established "in the cockpit there were individuals who were not members of the crew".
"The voice of one of them has been identified exactly, the voice of the other, or the others, will require additional information from the Polish side," she said.
The investigation found that the pilot's cabin door was open as the plane tried to land and the voices of the crew were hard to identify, Itar-Tass reported.
Ms Anodina stressed that the crew had received "timely information about weather conditions and alternate airfields", and that there had been no equipment failure.
"The engines were working up till the moment the plane collided with the ground," she said.
She added that she was confident that investigators would establish the causes of the crash as quickly as possible.
Results would be made available to authorities in Russia and Poland, and to the public, she said.
Passengers in cockpitPassengers in cockpit
May 19, 2010 Officials investigating the plane crash that killed Poland's president and 95 others last month say the crew did not have regular training and that passengers were in the cockpit before the crash.
There was no conclusion given about the cause of the crash on approach to the Russian city of Smolensk.
Polish investigation envoy Edmund Klich said it was unclear whether the non-crew voices heard in recordings influenced the crew to land despite warnings of bad conditions and poor visibility.
At a Wednesday news conference reporting preliminary investigation results, Russian Interstate Aviation Committee official Alexei Morozov said
the crew was formed only a few days before the flight and had not had regular training on how to handle special flight situations.

Watching the world’s leaders stumble their way through the economic crisis, it often feels as if political success and economic understanding are mutually exclusive.
Even the Chinese, who over the past generation have engineered a dramatic turnaround from their Maoist economic nightmare, show a remarkable willingness to pursue a monetary policy
(a currency peg to the U.S. dollar) that yields no benefit to their citizens.
Amid this morass of economic quackery, it is refreshing to see a clear ray of sanity emanating from one country: Poland.
Last summer, I was invited to speak at the Economic Forum in Krynica, a resort town in Southern Poland.
I was amazed at the level of economic activity and civic spirit that was on display throughout the country.
I also was fairly surprised that my economic views, which are routinely ridiculed at home, have much wider support among the Polish economic officials who presented at the conference.
This common sense understanding was showcased in an opinion piece published this week in the Financial Times by Polish Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski.
Contrary to the public flogging of the free market currently underway in Washington, under the auspices of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission,
Rostowski explains how governments caused the Crash of 2008 by removing the necessary element of fear from the markets.
He states that this was symptomatic of the “deep Keynesian project,” in which governments over the last half century have looked to smooth the economic cycle through periodic floods of monetary expansion and government spending. I couldn’t have said it better myself.
A product of the Solidarity movement that opposed the Polish Communist Party in the 1980’s, Mr. Rostowski, like many of his colleagues in the current Polish Administration, is intimately familiar with the hazards of central economic planning. He has seen this movie before, and he knows how it ends.
Instead, Poland has enacted economic policies that are informed by a belief in Austrian School (read: free market) economics. After the downfall of the Communists in 1989, Rostowski was part of a group that called for “shock therapy”: the rapid privatization of state-owned enterprises and the dismantling of price and currency controls.
In 2007, the center-libertarian Civic Platform party was put in power, with Rostowski as Finance Minister. Along with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, he has continued the process of transforming Poland into a laissez-faire paradise. Not accidentally, Poland is the only EU member state that showed positive GDP growth in 2009, at 1.7%. [fig for 3Q:09; Poland Central Statistical Office; 2009/11] Also, its public debt, at roughly 50% of GDP [Reuters; 2009/07/28], compares favorably with its neighbors — and with the United States.
A top priority of their administration was reduction of the income tax. The previous system, with three-tiers of 19%, 30%, and 40%, has been reduced to two tiers: 18% and 32%. [Haaba; 2008/01/15] In addition, the system’s minimal use of deductions and credits makes it radically simpler than the U.S. income tax.
In the meantime, Civic Platform is continuing its move toward privatization. Recently, Poland held an IPO for its state-owned power utility, Polska Grupa Energetyczna. According to a news report, “The sale brought in $2.1bn, pricing at the top end of the bankers’ guidance range, and becoming Europe’s largest IPO of the year.” The government has used these revenues to fund its budget and keep taxes in check. More importantly, it has returned capital to the marketplace to be used in the most efficient manner.
Civic Platform also understands that regulation hurts small business disproportionately by raising barriers of entry. Fortunately for Poland, a multi-year program of deregulation has been a boon for small businesses, and has given the country the most entrepreneurs of any state in Europe. This may explain the country’s resilience in the face of the global economic crisis.
Poland’s current growth is also fueled by an influx of foreign investment. To encourage such inflows, Rostowski has laid out a specific plan to adopt the euro as the country’s currency by 2015. While I have never been crazy about the euro concept, as opposed to a gold standard, the effort indicates to foreign investors a desire to control inflation. Assuming the block is able to stick together, the European Central Bank is considered a reliable enforcer of strict monetary policy. Poland’s zloty rapidly devalued after it was allowed to float, and though the rate of inflation is declining, it remains high. Eurozone membership will impose external discipline on the Polish government, even if Civic Platform loses power.
Anecdotally, I can attest that these people are hungry for free markets. My visit to Krynica was a breath of fresh air, and a startling reminder of how far America has strayed. If the Polish people can hold onto the traumatic lessons of communism, and continue undeterred down their current path, then this battleground of the 20th century may be the paragon of the 21st.
Polish presidential election Polish presidential election
Sunday, 4 July 2010
Results are expected to be released on Monday.
The people of Poland are voting in a run-off election to determine the country's next president.
Observers say the final result between Bronislaw Komorowski and Jaroslaw Kaczynski could be close.
Mr Komorowski has been acting president since his predecessor, Mr Kaczynski's twin brother Lech, was killed in a plane crash as he travelled to Russia in April.
The election has been dominated by the crash. Poland's first couple and 94 other people died when their plane came down in Smolensk on 10 April as they flew to attend a memorial ceremony for the World War II Katyn massacre.
The contests pits the business-oriented Bronislaw Komorowski from the ruling centrist Civic Platform against the conservative Jaroslaw Kaczynski of the main opposition Law and Justice party.
Komorowski won 41.5% in the first round and Mr Kaczynski 36.5%. Eight other candidates were eliminated.
Final opinion polls before Sunday's voting got under way suggested a close call, with floating voters certain to be pivotal.
Komorowski's support ranged from 45 to 54%, and Kaczynski's from 42 to 45%. Komorowski's supporters see him working well with Prime Minister Donald Tusk in trying to curb fiscal deficit.
Mr Komorowski, 58, said at his rally on Friday: "You have the choice between a politician who harbours resentment and grudges, and the future, with an optimistic vision of Poland."
Mr Kaczynski's supporters hope a victory for their candidate would curb cuts in public spending. He said on Friday:
"This election began with a tragedy. I hope it will end with a great success for Poland."
Mr Kaczynski, 61, served as prime minister but was voted out of office in 2007.
The BBC's Adam Easton in Warsaw says Mr Kaczynski has tried to present himself as a changed man, prepared to compromise with opponents, in the wake of his own personal loss.
The Polish president has a role in foreign affairs and the power to propose and veto legislation, although policy is set by the prime minister.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton avoided taking sides during her visit to Poland on Saturday.
"Whichever candidate is chosen, the United States will continue to be your friend and partner," she said.
Polling stations close at 2000 (1800 GMT).
Bronislaw Komorowski leads Polish presidential poll Bronislaw Komorowski leads Polish presidential poll
Monday, 5 July 2010
Komorowski has 53% - Jaroslaw Kaczynski 47% with 95% of votes counted.
Mr Kaczynski is the twin of former President Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash with 95 others in April.
Komorowski will be welcomed in Berlin and Brussels.
Bronislaw Komorowski, Poland's acting president, appears to be heading for victory in a close presidential election after hours of uncertainty.
I wish Kaczynski had won! Komorowski sounds like a Kommunist.
Bronislaw - Meaning Victor, Defending glory, Protector of glory
Komorowski - Polish - hut, cottager or tenant
Bronislaw Komorowski is Poland's new president. Will he allow Polant to again be a Russian tenant?
Komorowski sponsored a number of pro-European Union and economic reform, and was in conflict with Pres. Lech Kaczyński.
Komorowski is from the ruling Civic Platform party, while Mr Kaczynski represents the main opposition Law and Justice party.
The election has been dominated by a catastrophic plane crash.
Poland's first couple - along with other leading political and military figures died when their plane came down
in Smolensk on 10 April as they flew to attend a memorial ceremony for the World War II Katyn massacre.
Many voters who supported the left-wing candidate switched their allegiance to Komorowski.
Can Komorowski deliver stability?
I wish they asked - can he keep Poland free? No.
July 31, 2010 A friend in Poland I will call Patty told me some inside information about the plane crash.
I know she has contacts, she doesnt talk about them.
The people inside the plane besides the crew were the president and 90% of the others onboard were people belonging to the president's brother party.
Basically they were going there to give a show before elections to gain more votes by showing how patriotic they are. so they chose a historic site in Russia.
Military and political leaders were on plane.
Procedures were broken, you must not let so many high ranked military personnel in one plane.
It was an accident that could be avoided.
The pilots did NOT want to land.
The control tower did NOT give them permission to land because of weather conditions, they ordered them to go to another airfield.
The former president and a high ranked officer entered the cabin and ordered them to land anyway.
The pilots agreed to try to land once
Around 10 minutes before the crash after a chat with the airforce general in the cockpit, one of the pilots said something like "we're screwed but we have to try"
30 minutes before they crashed another plane with journalists onboard landed.
The pilot of the journalist plane warned the presidential pilots not to land.
During the try they hit a tree on a hill that they were flying over, the pilots were not able to gain attitude. They crashed in 6 seconds.
There was not a single body in one piece, just parts of bodies.
The plane crashed into the woods at 200 miles per hour, every tree branch is like a razor.
It took a long time to identify bodies because they were scattered all over the place.
The first lady's body was very hard to identify, she was identified by her wedding ring because her head was chopped off
Whoever says that russians might be behind it is wrong - actually they were very unhappy with all that.
The former president wouldnt have won the next elections anyway - so why would anybody want to kill him
When Patty told me this, I could tell she felt very badly for them.
There were a few good people who died on the plane. They died and nobody mentions them
The crew and maybe 3 or 4 of the politicians onboard were actually honest people, and you know what -
they dont talk about the stewardesses, the agents and security officers who died
After the crash a few russian soldiers found a wallet of one of the politicians, took the credit cards and cashed them
Poland shocked by tornadoes, one dead
July 15, 2012 - A freak wave of tornadoes ripped through northern Poland on Sunday, wrecking houses and swathes of forest and leaving one person dead and another 10 injured.
Tornadoes are not unknown here but the scope and power of Sunday's twisters was unusual and comes in a summer already marked by flash floods, hailstorms and gales.
Some 1,200 rescuers were working to remove fallen trees, unblock roads and restore utilities in the hardest hit Baltic region of Pomerania.
Trees were uprooted, buildings damaged and power lines downed, while some 550 hectares of woodlands in the Tuchola Forest area were flattened.
A caravan with a family of three inside was seen flying through the air in the village of Stara Rzeka and breaking into pieces upon landing, but its occupants suffered no serious injuries, news channel TVN24 reported.

'Abortion drone' to drop pregnancy-terminating pills on Polish town
An ‘abortion drone’ is set to fly to Poland this week to deliver pills that will allow women to safely terminate their pregnancies. Around 50,000 underground abortions are believed to take place in Poland each year due to the nation's strict restrictions.
The drone will be sent by Women on Waves, a Netherlands-based non-profit organization which provides medical abortion pills around the world.
Arriving at the Polish town of Slubice on Saturday, the drone aims to drop several packages of pills weighing under 5kg in total. The packets are to be received by women's groups, which will then distribute them to women who need them.
Dr. Rebecca Gomperts, founder and director of Women on Waves, says the drone mission will help women practically, while raising awareness about Europe's unequal abortion laws.
Nazi gold train found in Poland
August 20, 2015 - Two people in Poland say they may have found a Nazi train rumoured to be full of gold, gems and guns that disappeared in World War Two.
The train went missing near Ksiaz castle, Wroclaw as Soviet forces approached in 1945.
A law firm in Poland has been contacted by 2 men who have discovered the armoured train.
The men want 10% of the value of the train's contents.
The train was 150m long and may have up to 300 tonnes of gold on board.

Whats up in Poland?
Dec 18, 2015 - Poland changes leadership of NATO affiliate in night raid.
Officials of new Poland government, backed by troops, entered the office of a fledgling NATO counterintelligence center shortly after midnight to replace the head of the center with a person loyal to the new leadership.
The previous head, Col. Krzysztof Dusza, failed to act on a dismissal order last week. He said Dusza's license to access classified information was recently lifted and he could not continue in the post. Dusza said he had not received a dismissal document and believed he is still the head of the center.
The center is still being formed and is renting space from Polish military counterintelligence.
The new Law and Justice government has been replacing top staff at all of the nation's security services.
The incident sparked an angry reaction from the political opposition.
"I believe it has never happened in the history of NATO that a member state attacked a NATO outpost," said Tomasz Siemoniak, who was defense minister in Poland's previous centrist government. That proved to be an overstatement.
The Counter Intelligence Center of Excellence in Poland has not yet been accredited by NATO.
NATO centers of excellence are research centers, which are nationally or multi-nationally funded and staffed, and work alongside the alliance, but they are not NATO bodies.
The one in Warsaw is being jointly organized by Poland and Slovakia and is to be based in Krakow, in southern Poland.
Poland had been in political crisis since Law and Justice took power in mid-November 2015. The party is refusing to allow 3 judges chosen legally by the previous government onto the court.
Opposition to the way that the party is consolidating power brought out tens of thousands of protesters last weekend and more rallies across Poland are planned for Saturday.

Resignation of Generals rocks Poland
Mar 10, 2016 - Poland’s Constitutional Crisis Deepens. The government refuses to accept that the constitutional court even has the power to overturn reforms. Poland’s constitutional crisis deepened when the highest court rejected a series of changes to the way it operates.
The ruling conservative Law and Justice party immediately said it would not accept the court’s decision.
Andrzej Rzepliński, the president of the Constitutional Tribunal, said the changes interfered with the court’s independence and “violated the principles of a law-bound state.” He also criticized the haste with which the reforms were enacted during a late-night sitting of parliament in December, only weeks after Law and Justice won the election and returned to power.
Law and Justice’s attempt to stack the court does not stand on its own. In recent months, the party has purged political opponents from government agencies and state-run companies. Media outlets critical of the new government have been threatened by lawmakers.
This has set off alarm bells in Poland’s neighbors.
The EU launched an unprecedented probe into Poland’s judicial reforms in January.
The right is dismantling the Left's power structure - THAT is how to clean house!
Mar 13, 2016 - Over 50,000 people waving Polish and EU flags filled the streets of Warsaw.

"This moment is historic, because it changes the model in our part of Europe," Duda said at the launch of a joint exercise of Polish and American troops in Zagan, a town near the German border.
He was joined by Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, the US Army commander in Europe.
