Phoenix police are investigating the shooting death of a police officer early Wednesday.

The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. at a gas station-convenience store in west Phoenix.

Police responded to a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood call around 19th Avenue and Indian School Road when the officer was shot.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump said the unnamed officer died at St. Joseph's Hospital Wednesday morning.
Details about the officer are unknown, other than he was assigned to the Squaw Peak Precinct.

Officers are gathered at the hospital to show support.

Meanwhile, police have detained a man. He was transported to police headquarters in downtown Phoenix.

          ----------- UPDATE ------------

Phoenix police are investigating the shooting death of a police officer early Wednesday.

A Phoenix Police officer was shot and killed while searching for a man near Indian School Road and 19th Avenue early Wednesday morning.

The line-of-duty death marks the first in Phoenix since an officer was fatally wounded by a drunk driver in 2008.

The male officer, who was in his 20s, responded to a disturbance call in the 1900 block of west Fairmount Avenue about 1:30 a.m.

The officer and his female partner, both of whom have not been idenitified, searched for the suspect who parked a vehicle in a carport and covered it with a tarp, police said.

The male officer, who has not been identified, responded to a disturbance call in the 1900 block of west Fairmount Avenue about 1:30 a.m.

The officer and female partner searched for the suspect who parked a vehicle in a carport and covered it with a tarp, police said.

The vehicle is believed to be connected with a shots fired call in the Northwest Phoenix area, but has not been confirmed by police.

The officers went on opposite sides of the house. One of the officers found a man, who opened fire on the officer. That officer was struck.

Fellow officers did not wait for an ambulance and instead put the wounded officer in a police car and took him to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center.
He was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m.

Tactical teams and police dog found the suspected gunman hiding naked in a shed nearby the home, Crump said.
Officers fired rubber bullets to subdue the man.

He has been booked into police headquarters. The man has not been cooperative, police said.

Crump said officers in Central City Precinct were shocked by the news and prepared for a Memorial Day weekend of mourning.
The officer who was shot had two children, including a 2-week-old, according to the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association

"It makes the day so somber because they know what's coming up this weekend," Crump said.

Phoenix Public Safety Manager Jack Harris canceled a meeting in Washington, D.C., with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder about immigration issues and planned to return to the Valley Wednesday.
Central City Precinct has suffered several line of duty deaths in the past several years, according to the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association.

PLEA President Mark Spencer said the officer suffered heavy blood loss after the shooting from at least one gunshot wound.

Spencer said the suspect was a man in his early 30s from the Tucson area who had prior felony convictions.

"A car speeding down the street, there's nothing dangerous or serious about that, but the potential for violence never goes away," Spencer said. "There is no such thing as a routine traffic stop."

PHOENIX – The man who allegedly shot and killed a Phoenix police officer made his first court appearance Wednesday night.

Danny Ledezma Martinez, 30, is accused of killing 29-year-old Travis P. Murphy, who was searching for Martinez as he hid out in a Phoenix neighborhood.
Martinez sat with his head down while waiting to appear before the judge at his initial appearance Wednesday night.
The judged ruled that Martinez be held without bond. He is facing murder and weapons charges.

The shooting occurred when Murphy and another officer responded to a hit and run call, in the area of Fairmount and 19th avenues, around 1:30 a.m.

Sergeant Trent Crump with the Phoenix Police Department said officers had received a call that a Ford Mustang had slammed into a parked car -- and that
the driver was trying to cover, and possibly hide the Mustang, in a vacant carport a few doors down.

He said Murphy and another officer split up to search for the suspect.
When Murphy confronted Martinez in a nearby alley, Crump said Martinez shot him.

The owner of the car that Martinez is accused of hitting says she followed the commotion and witnessed part of the shooting.

"I heard the officer yell 'get down, get down, get down!', said the woman who did not want to be identified.
"Then, bam, bam, bam, bam (sound of gunshots) -- and, then I saw the officer fall."

Murphy, a four and half year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department -- assigned to the Squaw Peak Precinct -- was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Phoenix Law Enforcement Association President Mark Spencer said Murphy has a wife, a 2-year-old daughter and a 2-week-old son.

Rich Rodriguez, a neighbor, said he saw the Mustang back into the carport of an abandoned house and the suspect trying to cover it.
After police came, Rodriguez said he heard gunfire and saw an officer on the ground.

A search for the suspect was launched and homes in the area were evacuated.

Martinez, who Crump said is in the country legally, was reportedly found hiding in a shed in a backyard and was taken into custody.

A weapon was also recovered at the scene and a substantial amount of evidence has been recovered, according to police.

Police are also looking into whether Martinez was involved in a "shots fired" call that came in prior to the neighborhood hit and run.

Martinez sustained injuries from a K9 bite and a rubber bullet, according to Crump.

Wednesday afternoon, police walked Martinez, who was seen wearing a hospital gown with bandages on his upper arm, into the Fourth Avenue Jail.

Phoenix Public Safety Manager Jack Harris confirmed Martinez has an extensive record of violent crimes.

Harris said Martinez has been in and out of prison as far back as 1997 -- for charges including misconduct involving weapons, criminal damage, criminal trespassing and also for drug violations.

While in prison, Martinez also faced additional charges for smuggling contraband.

Crump said there are no outstanding suspects at this time, but anyone with information is urged to contact police.

Dallas policeman shot and killed

Dallas policeman shot and killed

June 21, 2010,  Monday

Lord as you comfort the friends, families, and colleagues,
please use this unfortunate tragedy for good as only You can,
in the Name of Yeshua, Jesus we pray.

LANCASTER, Texas - A police officer and two other men, including the son of Dallas' police chief, were killed in shootings at a suburban Dallas apartment complex, authorities said.

The officer was responding to a reported domestic disturbance around 6 p.m. at the apartment complex in Lancaster, just south of Dallas, when the call was upgraded to shots fired, police spokesman Sgt. Derek Clark said. When the officer arrived, an exchange of gunfire erupted and the officer was killed.

His name hasn't been released, but Lancaster Police Chief Keith Humphrey said late Sunday that he was a 37-year-old father of two and a five-year police veteran.

"We're heartbroken, and his family is devastated," Humphrey said. "(He was) one of the best people, one of the top officers in the department. Very caring, very giving, selfless, hard worker."

The officer was the department's first to be fatally shot in the line of duty, Humphrey said.

One of the other two men killed was David O'Neal Brown Jr., the adult son of Dallas' police chief, said Dallas Police Assistant Chief Charles Cato. He didn't specify whether Brown was killed before police arrived or during the officer-involved shooting.
The third victim hasn't been identified.

The Dallas Morning News reported that Brown, 27, was arrested on suspicion of selling marijuana in Waxahachie in 2003, but pleaded no contest and was convicted of a misdemeanor. In an interview earlier this year, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said he was proud of how his son, also a father, grew after the incident.

Two more suspects were detained and being questioned, Martos said. A seventh was being sought.

All three officers were from the Chandler Police Department. One was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, authorities said. One of the wounded officers was in critical condition at the same hospital while the other was in stable condition.

The names of the officers were being withheld until their families were notified, authorities said.

Martos told azcentral.com that the Chandler police undercover operation involved about a dozen officers, some of them members of the Chandler department's SWAT team, when shooting erupted inside the home.
Officials did not disclose details of the drug bust or what triggered the shootout.
