Laser concerns

Laser incidents worry aviation officials
December  9, 2010
-  FAA officials are worried about a steady increase of people pointing lasers at aircraft cockpits.
The intense light can temporarily blind pilots and has caused some to relinquish control of planes and helicopters to their co-pilots or abort landings.
Over the past six years, there has been a steady increase in reports from across the country of people pointing lasers at aircraft cockpits.
This year, there have been more than 2,200 incidents, up from fewer than 300 in 2005.
There hasn't been an air crash so far, but the incidents have aviation officials worried.

Dozens of people in the United States and around the world have been arrested for pointing lasers at aircraft cockpits, most often near airports during takeoffs and landings. Those are the most critical phases of flight, when pilots need to be their most alert. Interference with air navigation is a federal crime.

8-Wheeled Laser Truck for US Army
Oct. 8, 2012
To be used by DHS against Americans?
Boeing revealed plans this week to test its new toy developed for the Army, a High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator (HEL MD).
The laser, mounted to an 8-wheeled, 500-horsepower Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) would be able to shoot down threats at the speed of light with minimal collateral damage.
The weapon is a big break for the US military, which has been trying to develop laser weapons for years. Cooling and efficiency were problems, but so was getting the weapon down to a usable size. Modern warfare requires sophisticated weapons, including those using lasers and the electromagnetic spectrum.
This new model uses available electricity to create the 10-kilowatt, solid-state laser, meaning the troops using it would have ammo as long as their generator has power.
Boeing and the Army would like the project, currently in Phase II, to result in a true weapons-grade 100-kilowatt laser. It will use mirrors, high-speed optical sensors, and high-speed processors to detect and fire on unmanned aerial threats, rockets, artillery, and mortars. Forum Index -> America NEWS
