5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes near Bologna, Italy
5/19/12 - A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Bologna, Italy, on Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake, which initially registered at magnitude 6.3, was centered 22 miles north-northwest of Bologna in northern Italy at a relatively shallow depth of 6.3 miles, the USGS said.
The last major earthquake to hit Italy was a 6.3 magnitude quake in the central Italian city of L'Aquila in 2009, killing nearly 300 people.
In January, a 5.3-magnitude quake in northern Italy was felt in Genoa, Bologna, Turin and Italy's financial capital, Milan.

6.0 quake hits North Italy, 7 dead
May 20, 2012 210 miles NNW of ROME
A strong earthquake rocked a large swathe of northern Italy early on Sunday, killing at least three people and causing serious damage to the area's cultural heritage.
The 6.0 magnitude quake struck at 22:04 EDT (0204 GMT) while most people were sleeping, and thousands ran into the streets in their night clothes in panic.
The epicenter of the quake, the strongest to hit Italy in three years, was in the plains near Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of the Po River Valley, and the tremor was felt in nearby regions of Lombardy and Veneto.

Aftershocks continue in northern Italy from a powerful, shallow earthquake on Sunday. The death toll is at least seven.
5/20/12 Two of the dead suffered heart attacks.
Dozens are injured and up to 3000 people are not yet able to return to their homes.
There has been widespread damage to historic buildings from the magnitude 6.0 quake and the continuing strong aftershocks.
In the town of Finale Emilia, a section of San Carlo church collapsed. It contained a painting by 17th century artist Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, who was known as Il Guercino.
The earthquake occurred shortly after 4am. It was centred near Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of the Po river valley, at a depth of 10km.
The tremor was felt as far west as Liguria, bordering France.

Death toll rises after Italy quake
May 21, 2012 The death toll from a powerful earthquake in northern Italy has risen to six, as strong aftershocks forced the evacuation of thousands of people.
The epicentre of the 6.0-magnitude quake was in the province of Modena, but it was felt from Venice to Milan.
It has left thousands homeless and reduced historic buildings in cities including Bologna and Verona to rubble.
The quake hit in the early hours of Sunday (local time) as people were sleeping, sending terrified residents running into the street.
"I am 83 and I have never felt anything like this," Lina Gardenghi said in the town of Bondeno, near Ferrara.
The quake was followed by a series of jolting aftershocks, sparking the evacuation of 3,000 people.
At least two of the tremors reached magnitude-5.1, sowing fresh panic, further damaging already weakened buildings and causing more structures to collapse.
The tremors were more deadly than any since 2009, when the central city of L'Aquila was devastated.

Italy Earthquake Was Weird
5/22/12 The powerful shaking was a first for the region in centuries — and fairly surprising to seismologists.
strong and unusually shallow earthquake struck northern Italy over the weekend, fracturing pavement, sending torrents of brick and rubble raining down from buildings, and killing seven people. The powerful shaking was a first for the region in centuries — and fairly surprising to seismologists.
ANALYSIS: Cultural Treasures Crushed In Italy Quake
Data indicate the magnitude 6.0 quake, which struck just after 4 a.m. local time on Sunday (May 20), just north of Bologna, was a thrust quake — the type of earthquake caused when two tectonic plates smash together — yet it occurred at a depth of just 3 miles (5 kilometers).
"It is kind of surprising that it's that shallow, because it's pretty far from the plate boundary," said Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. "Normally we expect things to get deeper as they move northward," he told OurAmazingPlanet.
The quake hit about 470 miles (750 km) north of the plate boundary — the place where the two colliding plates meet — which runs along the sole of Italy's "boot."
It is here that the African plate is plowing slowly northward, crashing into the Eurasian plate.
Caruso explained that the shallower a quake, the more damage it can cause. "If a quake is 500 kilometers deep, and you're right on top of it, you're going to feel it a lot less strongly than if it's 5 kilometers deep," he said. "As the seismic energy moves through the ground some of it is dissipated."

More aftershocks hit Italy, thousands still homeless
28 May 2012 Rome. A force 4.0 tremor hit northern Italy on Sunday, one of the strongest of a series of aftershocks that have hit the area since it was struck by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake a week ago which killed seven people and made thousands homeless, Reuters reports.
The Civil Protection Authority said the quake hit an area near Modena at around 1820 GMT and checks for damage were being carried out.
Thousands of people are still accommodated in tents or other makeshift housing a week after the original earthquake, the most serious to hit Italy since the 2009 shock in L'Aquila which killed almost 300.
An almost continuous series of minor aftershocks has rattled the area over the past days, making it potentially unsafe for many people to return to their badly damaged homes.
Last Sunday's earthquake carved a swathe of destruction across the prosperous Emilia Romagna region, destroying or damaging hundreds of buildings including homes, factories and farms as well as historic churches and castles.
The government of Prime Minister Mario Monti has declared a state of emergency and pledged emergency funding of around 50 million euros.

Death toll rises to 15 in quake-struck Italy
5/29/12 A strong earthquake rocked northeastern Italy Tuesday, killing at least 15 people, just days after another quake in the same region wrought death and destruction.
Italy's Civil Protection Authority confirmed 15 people had perished and rescue forces were searching for four or five other people still missing after a series of strong quakes which caused widespread panic among residents.

Italy earthquakes will hit economy hard: business lobby
5/30/12 ROME (Reuters) - The strong earthquakes that hit the northern Italian region of Emilia Romagna in the past days will have prolonged economic effects that will worsen an already difficult situation, Italy's main business association said on Wednesday.
"The earthquakes in May, which had very serious effects on people's lives, will also have prolonged consequences for some of the most important industrial regions in Italy and for an area with strong manufacturing activity," business lobby Confindustria said in an economic report.
"This can only worsen an already very difficult situation," it said.
Emilia Romagna, one of Italy' richest and most productive regions, was hit by a deadly magnitude 5.8 earthquake and a series of aftershocks on Tuesday, just over a week after a force 6.0 tremor in the same region.
More than 20 people were killed in the two earthquakes which caused a swathe of destruction across the region.

6 tremors this morning, strongest recorded 2.6
(AGI) There has been a fall in the number of earthquake tremors recorded in areas across the provinces of Mantova, Modena and Ferrara, where two earthquakes on May 20 and 29 tore devastated churches and businesses, leaving a total of 19 people dead.
Between 07:00 and 13:00 today, Italy's institute for the monitoring of seismic activity (INGV) recorded 6 tremors, compared to several dozen over the same period of time in recent days. The magnitude of the tremors is also falling and in recent hours has not risen above 2.6 on the Richter Scale.

Italy earthquake death toll rises to 25
Jun 5, 2012 ROME - The number of people killed in two earthquakes that struck northern Italy in May rose to 25 on Tuesday, as aftershocks continued to spread fear among residents in the area.
The latest victim was a woman admitted to hospital after being injured in the second of two deadly tremors to strike the area in just over a week, health authorities in Bologna said.
A man, also seriously injured by the second tremor, remains in hospital and his life is in danger, the authorities said.
A 6.0 magnitude earthquake on May 20 was followed by a similar-size quake nine days later, destroying businesses and making thousands homeless.
The quake was the most deadly to strike Italy since 2009 when a tremor partially destroyed the central city of L'Aquila killing about 300 people.
The epicenter of the latest quake lies to the north of the city of Modena in what is one of the most productive regions of Italy.
Damages have been estimated at around 5 billion euros but could be higher as tremors continue to shake buildings in the area, preventing any resumption of reconstruction work.

Italy: Hospitals 'at seismic risk' in quake-prone territory
June 08, 2012 Around 15 percent of the country's hospitals were constructed before 1900, or which 74, or 9 percent, were built before 1800, according to data from the Italian Civil Protection agency, obtained by Adnkronos Health.
"The oldest hospitals are considered at seismic risk," said Giuseppe Paradiso, an engineer with Bari-based Gedi di Altamura construction firm. He said the type of cement used puts the structure at risk in the case of an earthquake because of "non-existing regulations."
"You built without thinking about the territory" he said.
Italy is one of the world's most seismic countries. A pair of earthquakes last month killed 25 people and caused around 5 billion euros in damage. More than 300 people perished when a quake struck the central Abruzzo region in April 2009.
"The older buildings were built with the seismic norms of the time. But today you need to make important changes to be in line with new regulations," said Daniela Pedrini, presient of the Italian Society of Health Architecture and Engineering.

Stromboli volcano (Italy): moderately strong activity
6/26/12 Our colleague Marc Szlegat just returned from a visit to Stromboli volcano whose activity has recently been increasing. Marc observed that there were 5 active glowing vents within the crater terrace. The most spectacular explosions took place from the eastern vent, the cone that had been building since 2009. They occurred roughly every 20 minutes, with sometime powerful explosions ejecting lava bombs up to 300 m height, many of which falling onto the Sciara del Fuoco.
Frequent eruptions also occurred from the western vent, with typical ejection heights of 50-100 m, and occasionally up to about 200 m. A third vent in the central crater and rarely a vent at the extreme western end of the crater erupted occasionally as well.

Experts convicted for failing to warn of Italy quake
10/22/12 In a verdict that sent shock waves through the scientific community, a court convicted seven experts of manslaughter yesterday for failing to adequately warn residents of the risk before a magnitude-6.3 earthquake struck central Italy in 2009, killing 308 people.
The defendants, all prominent scientists or geological and disaster experts, were sentenced to six years in prison.
Earthquake experts worldwide decried the trial as ridiculous, saying there was no way of knowing that a flurry of tremors would lead to a deadly quake.
"It's a sad day for science," said seismologist Susan Hough, of the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena, Calif. That fellow seismic experts in Italy were singled out in the case "hits you in the gut," she said.

Elderly man dies as quake hits south Italy
10/26/12 AN elderly man died from a heart attack and panic-stricken residents rushed into the streets fearing building collapses when a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck a southern Italian province.
The 84-year-old victim suffered heart failure when the quake struck the province of Cosenza early on Friday and was dead before emergency services could reach him.
No injuries have been reported but several buildings have been damaged. A local hospital was also evacuated and schools closed as a precautionary measure.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake, with a 5.3 magnitude at a depth of 3.8km, had its epicentre 6km southeast of Mormanno town in the Calabria region.
"Some plaster fell, a crack appeared in the stairway. We came down in a panic to the streets using our mobile phones for light," Mormanno bed-and-breakfast owner Giuseppina Capalbi told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Quake shakes central Italy
2/17/13 A 4.8-MAGNITUDE quake hit central Italy late Saturday, shaking apartment buildings in the centre of Rome and spooking citizens in the region of Abruzzo, struck by a killer quake in 2009.
The quake hit Frosinone, between the capital and the southern city of Naples, at a depth of 10.7 kilometres according to Italy's Geophysics Institute. No injuries or damage to buildings were reported.
The tremors sparked panicked calls in the Abruzzo region to the emergency services. The medieval town of L'Aquila was hit in 2009 by a 6.3-magnitude quake which killed 309 people, and ruined buildings still scar the landscape.
Inhabitants in villages in the national park in Abruzzo raced out of their houses in panic, according to Italian media reports.
Earlier on Saturday, three Italian builders and a technician were found guilty of multiple manslaughter after a dormitory they had restored and safety approved collapsed during the L'Aquila quake, killing eight students.
