Israels killed in helicopter crash in Romania

6 Israeli soldiers killed in military helicopter crash in Romania

July 26, 2010  debka

6 Israeli soldiers missing in military helicopter crash in Romania.
6 Israeli soldiers and one Romanian Air Force captain are missing, feared dead, in a crash of the Israeli Air Force CH-53 transport Yasur helicopter
during a joint Israel-Romanian-US military drill, Blue Sky 2010, in high mountains near the central Romanian town of Zarnesti northwest of Bucharest.
Radio contact with the helicopter was lost July 16 (date wrong). It was part of a two-helicopter flight taking party part in an exercise practicing low-altitude missions.

An Israeli Hercules transport took off Monday night to join the rescue operation.
A Romanian medical evacuation helicopter and two Israeli helicopters trying to reach the crash site were hampered for hours by the rugged, precipitous terrain.
They called in local mountaineers for aid.

Israeli and Romanian defense sources noted that on July 18, when the exercise began, a CH-53 made a crash landing after sensing a failure aboard.
Israel was revealed for the first time to be conducting joint air force exercises with NATO members Romania, Bulgaria and Greece.

Joint Israeli-Romanian aviation exercise takes tragic turn after helicopter crashes in mountainous terrain in central Romania
A military helicopter carrying six Israeli soldiers and one Romanian crashed Monday in mountainous terrain near Brasov, in central Romania.

According to local sources, 7 bodies had been recovered by rescue forces at the crash site by nighttime. The Israelis on board the chopper included four IDF pilots and two airborne mechanics.

According to Bucharest media reports, the Romanian Defense Ministry said the helicopter, a CH-53 Sikorsky, crashed during Blue Sky 2010 – an 11-day joint Romanian-Israeli aviation exercise.
The exercise began on July 18 and is set to conclude on July 29.

Earlier, Romanian Defense Ministry Spokesman Constantin Spanu said officials were scrambling to reach the crash site, located near the town of Zarnesti, some 75 miles northwest of Bucharest. The rescue mission included a medevac, as well as Israeli and Romanian ground troops, assisted by local police and medical personnel.

Joint IAF-Romania drill halted after helicopter crash

July  27, 2010

My report compiled July 27, Tuesday, from various web links.
The crash was likely Monday, July 26 - mis-reported date on some site.
I am writing this morning at dawn July 27.  Dates given online are July 16 and 18.
It appears the U.S.A. is also involved in these exercises.
I suspect these dates should be July 26 not 16.  This news is still breaking, details sparse.

July 26 -  An Israeli helicopter crashed Monday in the mountainous terrain of central Romania during a joint drill with the Romanian air force.
6 Israeli soldiers and one Romanian Air Force captain missing after a crash of the Israeli Air Force CH-53 transport helicopter during a joint Israel-Romanian-US military drill.
Local police said human remains and helicopter parts were scattered in the crash area.
I suspect Israeli news held back the information about deaths til families were notified.

Israeli Air Force suspended the joint exercise with the Romanian air force, participating soldiers return to Israel.

DETAILS

The CH-53 made a crash landing after sensing a failure aboard as the exercises began (July 18 ?)
The Israeli CH-53 helicopter was flying at low altitude and lost radio contact mid-afternoon July 26, Monday.
Radio contact with the helicopter was lost July 16 (26?) It was part of a two-helicopter flight taking party part in an exercise practicing low-altitude missions.

The IAF sent a C-130 Hercules transport plane to Romania carrying medical and search-and-rescue personnel, and Rabbinate who specialize in identifying bodies.

Romania rescue services landed their plane near the crash site early Tuesday, then hiked up to the site of the crash and waited for the Israeli team to join them.
They were delayed by hours due to poor weather and turbulent land conditions.

July 27  Tuesday morning Israeli rescue team reached the crash site with an Israeli Hercules transport chopper.
A Romanian medical evacuation helicopter and 2 Israeli helicopters trying to reach the crash site Monday were hampered for hours by the rugged, precipitous terrain.

Helicopter communications do not reveal any trouble before the crash.  Romanian rescue official says chopper burst into flames after hitting mountain.
The wreckage of the helicopter that crashed was found, and none of the 7 soldiers were aboard.
They appear to have survived the crash, Romanian officials said Tuesday.
Local police said human remains and helicopter parts were scattered in the area.

                       ---------------------------------------------------

Details of the crash remain unclear. Initial reports suggest that communication broke down between helicopters in a formation during a routine training exercise involving Israelis and Romanians, and the 2 choppers collided.

Romanian and Israeli troops were taking part in Blue Sky 2010, an 11-day joint aviation exercises where troops are trained to fly at low altitude in search, rescue and medical evacuation exercises.
Monday's drill was also aimed at acquainting IAF crews with long-range missions in unfamiliar terrain, though the crew of the second aircraft did not notice that their comrades had left the formation.

Romania replaced Turkey

Romania replaced Turkey

Air Force helicopter pilots were training in Romania Seeking alternatives to Turkey.
Training sessions far away from home are not unusual for Air Force members in general, and for helicopter pilots in particular.
Pilots arrived at the Romanian Air Force flight school.

The threats faced by Israel, the need to intercept weapons smuggled from terrorists states require the Air Force to maintain long-range operational capabilities.
Such operations are sometimes carried out on short notice far away from Israel, unfamiliar areas to pilots that are difficult to navigate.
Therefore aircraft training missions include search and rescue need training in that territory - as this chopper crash proves.

Up until 2009 most of this training was in Turkey.

Turkey has become jihadist, another terrorist nation, and cut ties with Israel and the west.
Turkey is in trouble with NATO.

Crashed chopper drilled Iran strikes

July 30, 2010   debka

The 6 airmen who died in a helicopter crash over the Romanian Mountains were flown home Friday, July 30, for burial with full military honors.

The Israeli Air Force had been drilling high-risk attacks on precipitous cliff caves similar to the mountain tunnels in which Iran has hidden nuclear facilities.
The crash occurred in the last stage of a joint Israeli-US-Romanian exercise for simulating an attack on Iran.

Thwarted by Moscow's refusal to sell them S-300 interceptor missiles, Iran has given up on adequate air and missile defense shields for its nuclear sites
and in the last couple of years has been blasting deep tunnels beneath mountain peaks more than 2,000 meters high for housing nuclear facilities.
There, they were thought by Tehran to be safe from air or missile attack.

The American and Israeli air forces have since been developing tactics for evading Iranian radar and flying at extremely low-altitudes
through narrow mountain passes so as to reach the tunnel entrances for attacks on the nuclear equipment undetected.
The drill in Romania took place at roughly the same altitude and in similar terrain that a US or Israeli air attack would expect to encounter in Iran.
For such strikes, special missiles would be used that are capable of flying the length of a tunnel, however twisty,
and detonating only when its warhead identifies and contacts its target.

The entire maneuver is extremely hazardous. The pilots must be exceptionally skilled, capable of split-second timing
in rising from low-altitudes to points opposite the high tunnel entrances without crashing into the surrounding mountain walls.

The Israeli helicopter is reported to have flown into a cloud patch hanging over its simulated target and crashed into a steep mountainside,
while the second helicopter flying in the formation avoided the cloud and continued without incident.
Israeli and American Air Force pilots are instructed, when encountering cloud cover of the target, to go around it.
At all times, they must have eye contact with their target.

The accident revealed to military observers that the Israeli Air Force is practicing long-distance flights not only by bombers,
but also heavy helicopters, would require in-flight refueling. These practice flights have been taking place in cooperation
with Greece and Bulgaria as well as Romania, whose distance from Israel of 1,600 kilometers approximates that of Iran.
American air bases in Romania and Bulgaria participate in the drills. The latest exercise with Romania, known as Blue Sky 2010,
followed up on the five-day US-Israeli Juniper Stallion 2010 war game held off the coast of southern Israel from June 6-10.

2 IDF choppers make emergency landing in Romania

August 3,  2010

A week after helicopter fatal crash in Romania that killed six Israeli soldiers, two IDF Sea Stallions request permission to land in field outside Bucharest due to malfunction. No injuries reported

A week after a deadly helicopter crash that left six IDF soldiers dead in Romania,
Two Israeli Air Force Sea Stallion choppers were forced to make an emergency landing Tuesday morning near the Romanian village of Arges, outside of Bucharest,.

The incident was reported in a statement issued by the Romanian Defense Ministry. In the statement, the Romanian Defense Ministry said the two pilots requested permission to land in the field due to a malfunction. The incident took place around 9 am and Romanian rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Romania's Defense Ministry later said "military' authorities have contacted the choppers' crews in order to help them fix the technical malfunctions and resume the flight."

The IDF did not immediately issue its own official statement.Meanwhile, Israel's embassy in Romania said that the two helicopters are expected to continue their training session.

An IDF source said a warning light went off in one of the helicopters, indicating the possibility of a malfunction that requires a check.
"Hence, in line with routine procedure, the chopper landed in order to look into the incident," the source said.
The second helicopter reportedly landed along with the first one "for safety reasons only."

The commander of the Romanian emergency investigation team, Colonel Ion Popa, said the police received an emergency call from several  village residents about the helicopters that landed in the field.
"I was told that the helicopters did not need our assistance. We sent investigators to the area," he said.
