Hurricane Amanda rapidly gained force far off of Mexico's Pacific coast on Sunday, growing into the strongest May hurricane on modern record for the Eastern Pacific, with sustained winds of up to 155 mph (250 kph).

MEXICO CITY Hurricane Amanda rapidly gained force far off of Mexico's Pacific coast on Sunday, growing into the strongest May hurricane on modern record for the Eastern Pacific, with sustained winds of up to 155 mph (250 kph).

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the main body of the category-4 hurricane poses little threat to land, however. It was centered about 770 miles (1,240 kilometers) south of the southern tip of Baja California and forecasters said it was likely to start weakening while staying well out to sea, at least through Friday.

Even so, Mexico's National Meterological Service said rains associated with Amanda were likely to drench much of western and central Mexico.

The previous May record for the region was held by Hurricane Adolph in 2001, which had sustained winds of up to 145 mph (230 kph). Earlier storms may have been stronger, but reliable records became possible with the start of the use of satellites in the mid-1960s.

The Eastern Pacific hurricane season officially starts on May 15. The Atlantic season starts on June 1.

Pacific Hurricane Amanda
May 26, 2014
Amanda is now the strongest May eastern Pacific hurricane on record with its strength close to that of a Category 5 hurricane.
Amanda's maximum sustained winds increased to near 155 mph and its central pressure dropped to 932 millibars by 11 a.m. PDT Sunday, meaning Amanda is a very powerful Category 4 hurricane.
That makes Amanda the strongest ever recorded hurricane in the eastern Pacific during the month of May.
Adolph from 2001 originally held that distinction. At the peak of Adolph's intensity, the central pressure bottomed out at 940 millibars and winds were nearly 145 mph.
Amanda is also the earliest Category 4 hurricane in the eastern Pacific, ahead of Hurricane Adolph in 2001, and the second earliest major eastern Pacific hurricane on record, behind Hurricane Bud in 2012.
Adolph reached Category 4 strength on May 28, 2001.
It is unusual, in terms of climatology, to have a minimal hurricane form in the eastern Pacific in May, let alone a strong Category 4 hurricane.
