GMO attack on seeds, Svalbard Global Seed Vault
Svalbard Global Seed Vault
Deep inside a mountain on a remote island in the Svalbard archipelago, halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, lies the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. It is a fail-safe, state-of-the-art seed storage facility, built to stand the test of time – and of natural or manmade disasters.
Permanent protection for the world’s food crops The purpose of the Vault is to store duplicates (‘back ups’) of all seed samples from the world’s crop collections. Permafrost and thick rock ensure that, even in the case of a power outage, the seed samples will remain frozen. The Vault can therefore be considered the ultimate insurance policy for the world’s food supply. It will secure, for centuries, millions of seeds representing every important crop variety available in the world today.
Scientists have long been alarmed by the loss of crop diversity and the vulnerability of the world’s seed collections. The idea of establishing a back-up seed facility in Svalbard dates back to the 1980s. However, it was only with the coming into force of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture in 2004, and with it an agreed international legal framework for conserving and accessing crop diversity, that the Vault became a practical possibility.
Managing the Vault The Seed Vault functions like a safety deposit box in a bank. The bank owns the building and the depositor owns the contents of his or her box. In the case of the Seed Vault, Norway owns the facility, and the depositing genebanks own the seeds they send to the Seed Vault; there is no transfer of ownership.
The Vault does not make material available to breeders, the way a conventional genebank would. Seeds are stored under what is known as “black box” arrangements, meaning that seed packages and boxes sent for storage will not be opened or sent to anyone except back to the original depositor in the event that they are required. The responsibility for testing material and for any subsequent regeneration and multiplication remains with the genebanks sending their seeds to Svalbard. No one has access to anyone else’s seeds.
The Vault is managed in partnership between the Trust, the Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen) and the Government of Norway. The management system for the Vault was designed with the goal of ensuring the longevity of the seeds, minimizing risk, and minimizing cost. There are no permanent staff on-site, though staff from NordGen travel regularly to Svalbard to monitor the facility and process new shipments when they arrive. Local officials also monitor the facility using electronic surveillance.
Funding of the Vault Construction of the Vault was funded entirely by the Norwegian government. Since no staff are needed permanently on-site, the annual operating costs are as low as around $300,000, and these costs are shared between the Trust and the Norwegian government. If thought of as an annual insurance premium for the world's food supply, this represents astonishing value.
The Trust is also assisting developing countries with preparing, packaging and transporting samples of unique accessions from their genebanks to the Arctic, and the Trust is financing the deposit of samples from the international collections of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
The Role of the Global Crop Diversity Trust The Trust sees the Svalbard Global Seed Vault as an essential element of a rational and secure global system for the conservation of crop diversity – after all, every good system needs a back-up.
The Trust supports the conservation of crop diversity in genebanks worldwide. As an extra layer of security, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault stores a backup of these valuable seed collections.
The Trust is committed to supporting the ongoing operational costs of the Vault, and is assisting developing countries with preparing, packaging and transporting samples of unique accessions from their genebanks to the Arctic.

A seed bank to save the world
· Project aims to protect global food supplies
· Three million samples to be housed in giant vault
The new Svalbard International Seed Vault will serve as a repository for crucial seeds in the event of a global catastrophe.
Carved into the permafrost and rock of the remote Svalbard peninsula, it will eventually house 3m seed samples from every country in the world.
"This facility will provide a practical means to re-establish crops obliterated by major disasters," said Cary Fowler, the executive secretary of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, which will manage the seed bank. "But crop diversity is imperiled not just by a cataclysmic event, such as a nuclear war, but also by natural disasters, accidents, mismanagement, and short-sighted budget cuts."
Agriculture relies on collections of crop species and their wild relatives. Seed banks are vital to the development of new crop varieties and, without them, agriculture would grind to a halt. Samples of the world's agricultural biodiversity, including crops such as wheat, apple and potato, are scattered across 1,400 seed banks around the world.
All these seed banks are at risk from local problems. Mr Fowler cited the example of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda as times when dozens of unique crops had been wiped out. At the same time, those countries' own seed banks had been destroyed, meaning the genes were lost for ever. "You can use the word extinction in this case," he said. "This would no longer occur once the [Svalbard] seed bank opened."
The Norwegian government and the Global Crop Diversity Trust have worked on the idea of building a global seed bank of last resort in the Arctic ice since 2004.
National Geographic Explores The Arctic Global Seed Vault
Take a look inside the global seed vault in this clip from National Geographic's upcoming 3-night special, "How The Earth Changed History".
The seed vault, built to protect the world's food supply in the event of a global crisis, is located on a remote Norwegian island in the Arctic Svalbard archipelago. It was built high enough to avoid rising sea levels, and deep enough into the mountain to be able to withstand a nuclear explosion. The vault is kept at a constant temperature of zero degrees to preserve its contents.

Famine coming to the USA
The time is coming when I will send famine on the land. People will be hungry, but not for bread.
They will be thirsty, but not for water. They will hunger and thirst for a MESSAGE FROM THE LORD.
I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken. People will look everywhere for A MESSAGE FROM THE LORD, but they WILL NOT find it.
WARNING Word from an Intercessor
January 25, 2010 Great & Terrible Famine coming to the US.
It will be devastating for those who have not tried to take care of putting up food & seed for themselves & their families.
Famine coming is spiritual as well as physical. Even as people begin to starve in the natural when they have no food to eat, they will do almost anything to feed themselves.
People will become ravenous for the Word of God spoken in Truth but many will be unable to find it because they count on others. The Lord is setting apart His remnant Bride & He will hide her from those who have professed to belong to Him but have not truly ever known Him at all. It will be apparent to everyone, most especially to them.
The time of miracles that Jesus spoke of will come - His servants will do mighty exploits in His Name & authority. Raising the dead will become commonplace as medicines will be available only to the ruling elite of the world. Jesus will be glorified in His remnant though she will not be that many when all has played out before His Second Coming. The two witnesses will remain hidden until the Lord calls them forth to do their work publically, although word of their comings & goings will be known for a season only amongst the people of the remnant.
Meanwhile, the world will have much less food, water, & goods of every kind. When the multitudes of disasters continue without respite, people will take sides, some will think they are safe with the government, others will rise up against them. Some will prevail, many more will be killed as in the former Soviet Union. The lies of the government or *those in power* will lie about where these people are - almost every adult without skills, killed. The children will be used mercilessly as slaves & workers by those who wield a little power. Many of these children will become Spirit Filled believers & will find ways to escape. The hidden remnant will find them & take them in as family.
It will become like the Holocaust, only multiplied beyond anything we could have imagined, especially as TRUE believers. It will become very much like that old movie with Charlton Heston that you have mentioned before, "Soylent Green". People who survive the great wrath of the Lord during the times we are entering will be eating "people"& will not know it. When they find out, many will not care. It will be every man for themselves so that they may live. Compassion will not live in the hearts of most. The remnant will be working all the while - doing the work of the Kingdom, in the midst of the wars, plagues, natural & manmade disasters. God will be with His people regardless of any circumstances.
We MUST continue to place our complete trust in Him or our own hearts will fail us as His remnant. We MUST be ready from this moment in time to run with the horses. Time has run out. It ran out quite a while ago. We MUST be disciplined to pray in whatever circumstance we find ourselves, so that we may extend the love of Jesus Christ to the ones to whom the Lord leads us. Lord,..help us - "Your strength is made perfect in our weakness."
The Organic Elite Surrenders To Monsanto
January 2011 In the wake of a 12-year battle to keep Monsanto's Genetically Engineered (GE) crops from contaminating the nation's 25,000 organic farms and ranches, America's organic consumers and producers are facing betrayal.
Whole Foods Market, Organic Valley, and Stonyfield Farm decided it's time to surrender to Monsanto. Top executives from these companies have publicly admitted that they no longer oppose the mass commercialization of GE crops, such as Monsanto's controversial Roundup Ready alfalfa, and are prepared to sit down and cut a deal for "coexistence" with Monsanto and USDA biotech cheerleader Tom Vilsack. In a cleverly worded, but profoundly misleading email sent to its customers last week, Whole Foods Market, while proclaiming their support for organics and "seed purity," gave the green light to USDA bureaucrats to approve the "conditional deregulation" of Monsanto's genetically engineered, herbicide-resistant alfalfa.
GMO is an attack on our seeds
Genetic engineering is an imperfect technology.
It is a cell invasion technology through which inter-specie barrier is transcended.
Jan-04-2012 India and Monsanto have a growing disparity of interests.
Once again, our seeds are under attack. Trans-national seeds companies like Monsanto, Syngenta and Bayer are pushing genetically modified [GM] seeds in India without proper biosafety assessment. It is now scientifically known that when GM seeds are sown and plants flower, non-GM plants are contaminated through cross-pollination, and all life forms are contaminated through horizontal transfer of genetic traits. The contamination is irreversible. Once our seeds are contaminated with GM organisms, the contamination is in perpetuity.
Genetic engineering of seeds
Genetic engineering [GE] technology allows patenting of seeds; it has no other purpose. Natural seeds are taken and their genes spliced by one of several methods. The altered genetic trait in a natural seed is then patented. These seeds neither increase yield nor enhance nutritive content of foods; nor do they increase yield by reducing crop losses due to pest attacks or helping plants withstand vagaries of weather. But patented seeds ensure huge profits for multinational corporations.
Genetic engineering is an imperfect technology. It is a cell invasion technology through which inter-specie barrier is transcended. Mother Nature has devised mechanisms that make a fish behave as fish and a potato behave as potato. GE technology transfers the selected traits of one specie [e.g., ability to withstand low temperature in a fish] to another [e.g., tomato] so that the engineered specie [tomato] withstands cold temperature.
But in the complex world of nature, such invasion of cell and gene manipulation can wreak havoc. For example, Bt cotton seed contains the genes of bacillus thuringiensis [Bt] that makes a cotton plant behave like pesticide because Bt kills certain pests [e.g. boll worm] that attack cotton plants. Exactly the same transformation takes place when a farmer uses Bt rice or Bt Okra or Bt Brinjal or Bt corn or Bt potato or Bt tomato, or any seed containing the genes of Bacillus thuringiensis bacterium: the plant itself behaves like a pesticide.
Monsanto Plans Massive Biotech Experiment in the U.S.
March 15, 2012 The US government has signed off on a large-scale experiment involving genetically modified crops, which will lead to biotech big shot Monsanto introducing an engineered corn seed across America from South Dakota to Texas.
Monsanto was given the go-ahead to test out a man-made corn variant that they claim can thrive in dry, unfavorable conditions. With much of the American south and southwest experiencing abnormally arid conditions, the freak-seed could revitalize a chunk of the nation’s agriculture. More likely, however, is that a success will mean revitalization in terms of Monsanto’s profits and not much more.
The government has agreed to let Monsanto test out the biotech crop on farms owned by the company from the state of South Dakota down through Texas to see if the seed stands to be commercially viable; if so, it is expected to be made available for purchase in 2013. With America’s small-time agriculturists in danger — and already largely threatened by industry giant Monsanto — a success for the seed could see yet more farmers finding themselves unable to compete and forced to throw in the towel.
European Commission to criminalize nearly all seeds and plants not registered with government
May 2013 (NaturalNews) A new law proposed by the European Commission would make it illegal to "grow, reproduce or trade" any vegetable seeds that have not been "tested, approved and accepted" by a new EU bureaucracy named the "EU Plant Variety Agency."
It's called the Plant Reproductive Material Law, and it attempts to put the government in charge of virtually all plants and seeds. Home gardeners who grow their own plants from non-regulated seeds would be considered criminals under this law.
The draft text of the law, which has already been amended several times due to a huge backlash from gardeners, is viewable here.
"This law will immediately stop the professional development of vegetable varieties for home gardeners, organic growers, and small-scale market farmers," said Ben Gabel, vegetable breeder and director of The Real Seed Catalogue. "Home gardeners have really different needs - for example they grow by hand, not machine, and can't or don't want to use such powerful chemical sprays. There's no way to register the varieties suitable for home use as they don't meet the strict criteria of the Plant Variety Agency, which is only concerned about approving the sort of seed used by industrial farmers."
Virtually all plants, vegetable seeds and gardeners to eventually be registered by government All governments are, of course, infatuated with the idea of registering everybody and everything. Under Title IV of the proposed EU law:
Title IV Registration of varieties in national and Union registers
The varieties, in order to be made available on the market throughout the Union, shall be included in a national register or in the Union register via direct application procedure to the CVPO.
Gardeners must also pay fees to the EU bureaucracy for the registration of their seeds. From the proposed law text:
The competent authorities and the CPVO should charge fees for the processing of applications, the formal and technical examinations including audits, variety denomination, and the maintenance of the varieties for each year for the duration of
While this law may initially only be targeted at commercial gardeners, it sets a precedent to sooner or later go after home gardeners and require them to abide by the same insane regulations.
