Obama Admin Broke Law to Push Abortion in Kenya
Obama has been turning Kenya Africa from a mostly Christian nation into a Muslim dominated one.
One way to do that is to finance the Muslims.
$18 million in taxpayer funds provide funding for a group pushing legalized abortion in Kenya - Obamafia broke the law.
Obama grantee openly pushed to expand abortion in Kenya despite a long-standing, annually renewed law that prohibits U.S. tax dollars from being used to lobby for or against abortion in other countries.
Obama official stonewalled investigators and refused to cooperate with the GAO in its investigation of the activities.
Obama basically hired surrogates to do its dirty work of abortion promotion in Kenya. He ignored the abortion prohibition with the end result being a new Kenyan constitution that vastly expands access to abortion in Kenya, courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer.
Several other countries will be amending or creating new constitutions, and this U.S. tax-payer funded effort to change Kenya’s pro-life laws raises red flags as to how U.S. monies may be used to impose legalized abortion on other countries through their constitutions.

Explosions kill 5, wounds 75 at Kenya
June 13, 2010 Sunday NAIROBI, Kenya
Two explosions ripped through a park in Nairobi's capital during a packed political rally late Sunday, killing five people and wounding 75, officials said.
The rally was held to protest a draft constitution the country will vote on in August. The country's president and prime minister support it, but several prominent political leaders do not.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga said officials don't yet know the cause of the blasts, but that they wounded 75 people. Dr. Charles Kabetu of Kenya's national hospital said five people had died.
Kenyan churches blame govt for explosions at rally
June 13, 2010 A group of anti-abortion Kenyan churches and Christian groups on Monday blamed Kenya's government for involvement in two explosions that ripped through a packed rally protesting the country's proposed constitution.
The accusation over Sunday evening's attack could set a contentious tone between the groups supporting and opposing the draft constitution, which the country votes on in early August. The most divisive issue in the proposed constitution is on abortion, which the draft would allow to save the mother's life.
Kenya's president and prime minister support the new constitution, and U.S. Vice President Joe Biden urged Kenyans to embrace constitutional reform during a speech here last week. But prominent politicians and Kenya's church community want the draft defeated because of its allowances for abortion and a clause that would recognize informal courts used by Kenya's Islamic community.
A New Approach to Aid to Africa
July 23, 2011 Please pray for the Lord Jesus, King of kings, to be glorified in these initiatives.
Defend Africa MeetingThe Christian Voice July newsletter reported Prime Minister David Cameron’s boast to a party of homosexual activists at 10 Downing Street that he will be using aid to African nations to force them to legalise homosexual acts (aka sodomy).
No doubt pressure will be brought against the Caribbean islands as well. So we are holding a meeting at the Emmanuel Centre in Victoria, central London on the afternoon of Thursday 8th September in London, beginning at 2pm, to co-ordinate a defence of African morality against Cameron’s cultural imperialism. This meeting will be for Christian pastors and people, politicians, and all who wish to resist this neo-colonialism. It will have an eye on the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth at the end of October this year. Email me back if you are able to help co-ordinate this project and reach those who matter between now and the meeting.
A New Approach to Aid to Africa
Judy and I were in Kenya earlier this month, and a new approach to aid came to me. There are many education charities and health charities, but with 70% of Kenya’s population under 30, and unemployment standing at 20%, what about a charity which would train young people and – this is the crucial bit – guarantee them a job at the end of it, making consumer goods which are currently imported?
The July Christian Voice newsletter has articles on the creep of euthanasia, the anti-Christian Ekklesia company, George Soros, the attendance of Chancellor George Osborne MP at the secretive Bilderberg conference, and how David Cameron wants to use British aid to force African nations to legalise sodomy. We unmask New Statesman editor Mehdi Hasan as a Muslim extremist and carry an uplifting piece on the reformer George MacDonald. Lastly, there is an article from me on the benefits of delighting ourselves in the Lord.
Horn of Africa drought, A vision of hell
July 2011 Horn of Africa droughtAid agencies issue drought appeal
The UK's Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has launched an emergency appeal to help the more than 10 million people affected by severe drought in the Horn of Africa. BBC reports from the Dadaab refugee camp in eastern Kenya, where more than 1,000 people arrive each day seeking help.
At a makeshift cattle market in the middle of the refugee camp, herdsmen are trying to sell off what little livestock they have left.
But no-one wants to buy the cattle and goats on sale here, for the chances are that very soon they will be dead.
There is nowhere for them to graze: the pastures here are parched and arid, and it has barely rained for two years running.
"I'm selling my cattle at knock-down prices," said one man. "I'm practically giving them away."
Not far away, the landscape is littered with the carcasses of dead animals.
In this part of the world, livestock are everything: they represent a family's entire assets, capital, savings and income. When the animals die, it frequently means the humans do as well.
Extended drought is causing a severe food crisis in the Horn of Africa, which includes Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia. Weather conditions over the Pacific means the rains have failed for two seasons and are unlikely to return until September.
Food shortages are affecting up to 12 million people. The UN has not declared a famine but large areas of the region are now classified as in crisis or emergency, with malnutrition affecting up to 35-40% of children under five.
The humanitarian problem is made worse by ongoing conflicts, which means that until July militant groups had only allowed aid organisations limited access to large parts of southern Somalia and eastern Ethiopia.
Since the beginning of 2011, around 15,000 Somalis each month have fled into refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia looking for food and water. The refugee camp at Dadaab, in Kenya, has been overwhelmed by 370,000 people.
Farmers unable to meet their basic food costs are abandoning their herds. High cereal and fuel prices had already forced them to sell many animals before the drought and their smaller herds are now unprofitable or dying.
The refugee problem may have been preventable. However, violent conflict in the region has deterred international investment in long-term development programmes, which may have reduced the effects of the drought.
Development aid would focus on reducing deforestation, topsoil erosion and overgrazing and improving water conservation. New roads and infrastructure for markets would help farmers increase their profits.
The result of climate conditions, conflict and lack of investment is that 6.7 million people in Kenya and Ethiopia are currently existing on food rations, and relief agencies estimate 2.6 million in Somalia will need assistance a new emergency operation.
Across the sprawling mass of the Dadaab refugee camp - some 50 km sq (19 sq miles) - there are several graveyards now, full of small mounds of earth, where chronically malnourished Somali refugees have been buried.
Usually the graves are horribly small: infant mortality in this camp has risen threefold in the last few months, according to the United Nations.
Infants - children aged five and under - are especially vulnerable to malnutrition and all the illnesses and diseases which frequently accompany it, such as pneumonia and diarrhoea.
With more than 1,000 refugees arriving here every day, Dadaab is becoming overcrowded and insanitary. The camp director told me there could soon be half a million people here - more a city than a refugee camp.
Many of the new arrivals have walked for days or weeks to get here, desperate to escape not only from the drought in Somalia but also its endless civil war.
The children especially are malnourished and dehydrated when they finally get here. The tragic irony is that some of them will die within a day or so of their arrival.
Some mothers are letting the weakest children die, while they try to save the stronger ones Ms Andrey rushes around, handing out high-energy biscuits and checking which babies need to be taken to one of the camp's clinics.
Witch-doctors reveal extent of child sacrifice in Uganda
7 January 2010 Human sacrifice in Uganda, ritual killings of children may be common. One witch-doctor led us to his secret shrine and said he had clients who regularly captured children and brought their blood and body parts to be consumed by spirits. A former witch-doctor confessed to having murdered about 70 people, including his own son. The Ugandan government said human sacrifice is on the increase, directly linked to rising levels of development. They capture other people's children.

July 11, 2010 Blast killed one American, death toll changing, Somalia link
Two separate explosions rocked the Ugandan capital Kampala Sunday night, killing many people packed into bars to watch the World Cup final, police said.
"The information we have indicates 13 people have died here at the Ethiopian Village (restaurant) and many others are injured and
more than 10 people are reported to have died at the rugby club," Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura told reporters at the scene of one blast.
Police said there were many casualties at both blast sites.
The Ethiopian Village is located in the Kabalagala district of Kampala, a popular night-life spot which was heaving with soccer fans watching the World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands.
"The bombs went off in fully packed bars as people were watching the World Cup finals," police spokeswoman Judith Nabakooba said.
There was no immediate indication of who launched the attack.
Last year Somali al Shabaab terrorists threatened to attack the Ugandan capital. The country has troops in Somalia with an African Union peacekeeping force.

Obama sending combat troops to central Africa to aid fight against rebels
President Obama has deployed combat troops to central Africa to aid in the fight against the Lord's Resistance Army. In a letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner, Obama says 12 troops with "appropriate combat equipment" were deployed on October 12 and approximately 100 in total will be deployed including a second combat team and headquarters, communications and logistics personnel. The forces will provide information and advise and assist "select partner nation forces," Obama explains. The troops will not fight except in self-defense. The full letter is after the jump.
TEXT OF A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT TO THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE OF THE SENATE
October 14, 2011
Dear Mr. Speaker: (Dear Mr. President:)
For more than two decades, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has murdered, raped, and kidnapped tens of thousands of men, women, and children in central Africa. The LRA continues to commit atrocities across the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan that have a disproportionate impact on regional security. Since 2008, the United States has supported regional military efforts to pursue the LRA and protect local communities. Even with some limited U.S. assistance, however, regional military efforts have thus far been unsuccessful in removing LRA leader Joseph Kony or his top commanders from the battlefield. In the Lord's Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act of 2009, Public Law 111-172, enacted May 24, 2010, the Congress also expressed support for increased, comprehensive U.S. efforts to help mitigate and eliminate the threat posed by the LRA to civilians and regional stability.
In furtherance of the Congress's stated policy, I have authorized a small number of combat-equipped U.S. forces to deploy to central Africa to provide assistance to regional forces that are working toward the removal of Joseph Kony from the battlefield. I believe that deploying these U.S. Armed Forces furthers U.S. national security interests and foreign policy and will be a significant contribution toward counter-LRA efforts in central Africa.
On October 12, the initial team of U.S. military personnel with appropriate combat equipment deployed to Uganda. During the next month, additional forces will deploy, including a second combat-equipped team and associated headquarters, communications, and logistics personnel. The total number of U.S. military personnel deploying for this mission is approximately 100. These forces will act as advisors to partner forces that have the goal of removing from the battlefield Joseph Kony and other senior leadership of the LRA. Our forces will provide information, advice, and assistance to select partner nation forces. Subject to the approval of each respective host nation, elements of these U.S. forces will deploy into Uganda, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The support provided by U.S. forces will enhance regional efforts against the LRA. However, although the U.S. forces are combat-equipped, they will only be providing information, advice,
and assistance to partner nation forces, and they will not themselves engage LRA forces unless necessary for self-defense. All appropriate precautions have been taken to ensure the safety of U.S. military personnel during their deployment.
I have directed this deployment, which is in the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States, pursuant to my constitutional authority to conduct U.S. foreign relations and as Commander in Chief and Chief Executive. I am making this report as part of my efforts to keep the Congress fully informed, consistent with the War Powers Resolution (Public Law 93-148). I appreciate the support of the Congress in this action.
Sincerely, BARACK OBAMA
God help us!
Obama sending US military to Uganda Africa to kill the Christians there
Barak Obama was born in Kenya, Africa, right next door to Uganda
Arab Spring took Sudan just north of Uganda, this is a continuation
October 14, 2011 Obama is sending about 100 U.S. troops to central Africa to help local forces battle the Lord's Resistance Army,
a 'rebel' (they are the Christians!) group that the administration says has waged a campaign of murder, rape and kidnapping for more than two decades.
Obama said the troops will act as advisers in efforts to hunt down rebel leader Joseph Kony but will not engage in combat except in self-defense,
according to a letter to Congress that was obtained by Fox News.
The first troops arrived in Uganda on Wednesday. Ultimately, they will also deploy in South Sudan, the Central African Republic and Congo.
A senior administration official downplayed the notion that the armed troops could be drawn into a hostile, combat situation, saying the move was sparked by Congress passing a law year urging the administration to do something to crack down on the Lord's Resistance Army (Christians).
Long considered one of Africa's most brutal rebel groups, the Lord's Resistance Army began its attacks in Uganda more than 20 years ago but has been pushing westward.
The administration and human rights groups say its atrocities have left thousands dead and have put as many as 300,000 Africans to flight.
They have charged the group with seizing children to bolster its ranks of soldiers and sometimes forcing them to become sex slaves.
Kony is wanted by the International Criminal Court under a 2005 warrant for crimes against humanity in his native Uganda.
Obama's announcement came in low-key fashion -- a letter to the leader of the House, Speaker John Boehner, in which he said the deployment "furthers U.S. national security interests and foreign policy and will be a significant contribution toward counter-LRA efforts in central Africa."
The deployment drew support from Sen. James Inhofe, a Republican who has visited the region.
"I have witnessed firsthand the devastation caused by the LRA, and this will help end Kony's heinous acts that have created a human rights crisis in Africa," he said in a statement. "I have been fervently involved in trying to prevent further abductions and murders of Ugandan children, and today's action offers hope that the end of the LRA is in sight."
REALLY NEED TO BEWARE WHAT YOU BELIEVE.

US expands ‘shadow war’ in Africa with spy planes
June 2012 The U.S. military is expanding its intelligence-gathering operations across Africa, the Washington Post reports, mainly using small, unarmed planes "equipped with hidden sensors that can record full-motion video, track infrared heat patterns, and vacuum up radio and cellphone signals"—part of a "shadow war" against al-Qaida and other militants.
Approximately a dozen secret U.S. air bases have been established there in the last five years, according to the paper, which "pieced together descriptions of the surveillance network by examining references to it in unclassified military reports, U.S. government contracting documents and diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy group."
One of them is in "Ouagadougou, the flat, sunbaked capital of Burkina Faso." But the planes often "refuel on isolated airstrips favored by African bush pilots, extending their effective flight range by thousands of miles."
The spy program is overseen by U.S. Special Operations but relies on help from private military contractors and African troops, the Post said. And while it's not technically part of the White House's controversial drone program—which killed Abu Yahya al-Libi, al-Qaida's No. 2, in a drone strike in Pakistan earlier this month—the U.S. military does use a few unmanned spy planes there, too.
"We don't have remotely piloted aircraft in many places other than East Africa, but we could," a senior U.S. military official told the paper. "If there was a need to do so and those assets were available, I'm certain we could get the access and the overflight [permission] that is necessary to do that."
Most, though, "take off the old-fashioned way—with pilots in the cockpit." Why not drones? Conventional aircraft "are cheaper to operate and far less likely to draw attention because they are so similar to the planes used throughout Africa."
Kenya Muslim riots expose political, economic rifts
Is Kenya a CIA gateway to taking Somalia and Uganda?
Sep 2, 2012 The assassination of a Muslim cleric in Kenya's port of Mombasa and deadly riots that followed have exposed deep social, political and sectarian divides that could unleash more violence ahead of a presidential election next year.
Unidentified gunmen sprayed bullets into the car of Aboud Rogo, killing a man accused by both the Kenyan government and the United States of helping al Qaeda-linked Islamist militants in Somalia.
Rogo's supporters fought running street battles with the security forces in the hours after his death, and sporadic violence continued over the following days. Churches were torched and two grenades were thrown at police vehicles. At least five people have been killed.
The government says the violence was organized by Kenya's "enemies" and blames Muslim radicals - including the slain cleric - for supporting al-Shabaab, the Islamists that Kenya's military has been battling since invading Somalia last year.
Muslims, who predominate in many neighborhoods of Kenya's second largest city, blame the authorities for the cleric's killing, and say it is part of a campaign against their community and faith.

Obama family raising money for sharia in Kenya
10/16/12 This would make for some great presidential townhall debate questions, except the media is in full protection mode. via Obama family busted in Shariah scheme.
Since his inauguration, President Obama’s family in Kenya has been on a mission to use the Obama name to transform Kenya from the nation’s current Christian majority to an Islamic majority that will spread Islamic law, or Shariah, through the country.
Arab researchers Walid and Theodore Shoebat have documented the claims in a special report that translates an explosive television interview never before seen in the West.
In the interview, Musa Ismail Obama, President Obama’s first cousin in Kenya, told the Arabic-language satellite TV network Al-Jazeera that the Saudi Arabian royal family has developed a strong relationship with the Obama family in their home village of Kogelo in Alego, Siaya District, West Kenya.
Musa took pains to explain the need to proselytize Islam in Kenya, which is in line with the desire of wealthy Saudis to transform Kenya into a majority Muslim country.
Walid Shoebat pointed out that an article in the Arabic-language newspaper Al-Arab acknowledged the importance of the Obama name to the efforts of the Kenya family to expand the position of Islam in the country. Shoebat noted the article describes President Obama as a Muslim, referring to “President Obama’s Islamic faith.”
The Obamas fundraising empire is so successful the excess students have had to be diverted from Saudi Arabia to nearby Doha in Qatar.
“When [the students] submit an application to Sarah Obama Benevolent Fund, they expect to get what they want, but we are flooded,” Musa explained in the Al Jazeera interview.
Learning of the flood of students sent to the Wahhabi universities in Saudi Arabia, the Al-Jazeera interviewer asked, “So you are opening an avenue in other universities?”
Musa said the excess students were sent to nearby Doha, after Musa visited and made the necessary arrangements.
Following up, the Al-Jazeera interviewer asked Musa, “Do all these scholarships involve studying Arabic and Shariah?”
Musa explained, “Some of those do not involve Shariah, like medicine or engineering.”
Al-Jazeera then asked what the majority of students were sent to Qatar to study.
“The majority of course is Shariah schools,” Musa explained, “because my connections in the institutions [in Qatar] is with Shariah schools”
Obama family Shariah scheme
October 11, 2012
Obama's family in Kenya has been using the Obama name to transform current Christian majority in Kenya to an Islamic majority that will
spread Islamic Shariah law there. Shariah demands Christians be killed.
Arab researcher Walid Shoebat have documented this.
The Saudi Arabia royal family has a strong relationship with Obama, being they put him in power in the whitehouse.
Shoebat describes Obama as a Muslim, which Obama himself did on an ABC interview.
After Obama was inaugurated, the Muslim side of the Obama family in Kenya went from rags to riches overnight.

Kenya policemen seriously injured in grenade attack
17 October 2012 Kenya has been hit by a series of attacks since sending troops to join the fight against al-Shabab
At least 10 Kenyan policemen have been seriously injured in a grenade attack.
The officers were searching a house in Coast state near Mombasa, where they found weapons including an AK-47 rifle and two grenades.
A police spokesperson said Somalia-based Islamists al-Shabab may have been behind the incident.
Kenya has been hit by a series of grenade and gun attacks since it sent troops into Somalia to help fight the al-Qaeda-linked group last year.
Aggrey Adoli, the head of police for Coast province, told reporters that three suspects were also killed in the exchange of fire following the attack.
Suspected al-Shabab supporters have carried out a number of attacks over the past year in the Coast region, a popular tourist destination.
Kenyan troops have been fighting against the group alongside their Somali counterparts under the banner of African Union forces since October 2011.
At the end of last month they took al-Shabab's last Somali stronghold, the strategic port city of Kismayu.
Uganda: Marburg Virus kills 5 Family Members
October 21, 2012 Marburg hemorrhagic fever is the same family as Ebola
Marburg hemorrhagic fever is a rare, severe type of hemorrhagic fever which affects both humans and non-human primates. Caused by a genetically unique zoonotic (that is, animal-borne) RNA virus of the filovirus family, its recognition led to the creation of this virus family.

Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe has reportedly confirmed that it is Marburg, prompting widespread containment measures now unfolding around the affected areas between Kabale and Kisoro.
Uganda gov't dispatches medical team to southwestern region over Marburg outbreak
Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's ministry of health on Friday dispatched a team of experts to the south western district of Kabale where an outbreak of the deadly Marburg hemorrhagic fever has been confirmed.
The ministry in a statement issued here said the team will support both the clinical and public health investigations, adding that the National Ebola Task-force has reactivated its rapid response committees to quickly act to any emergencies.
"The surveillance team has commenced the active tracing and listing of all possible contacts that were exposed to the suspects and confirmed cases," the statement said.
The ministry early on Friday confirmed the outbreak of the highly infectious viral hemorrhagic fever after laboratory tests of three samples turned positive.
From Ebola to Marburg: rare virus rocks Uganda
The deadly Marburg haemorrhagic fever in the southwestern Ugandan district of Kabale claimed a fifth life from the same family at the weekend.
Dr Patrick Tusiime, the Kabale district health officer, told The Observer that the fifth victim died on Saturday morning and was quickly buried by a team of health officials to avert the spread of the disease. The Uganda Virus Research Institute and the ministry of Health confirmed the outbreak of the Marburg virus in Rwabihondo village, Kitumba parish, Ndorwa West constituency, on Friday.
The victims include Boaz Turyahikayo, a lecturer at Uganda Christian University and his sister, Mildred Ansasiire, a primary school teacher.
“We have restricted family members from moving out to avoid spreading the disease,” Dr Tusiime explained, adding that the family members would be confined in their home from where they would be monitored for 9-10 days.
Marburg hemorrhagic fever is caused by a virus in the same family as Ebola.

UGANDA Marburg hemorrhagic fever outbreak continues
November 1, 2012 9 dead
As of the end of October, 18 cases and nine deaths have been reported as a result of Marburg hemorrhagic fever outbreak, according to WHO. The outbreak began in mid-October, and cases have been reported from five districts in southwestern Uganda, Kampala, Ibanda, Mbarara and Kabarole, with a case fatality rate of 50%. Blood samples from nine patients have been confirmed for Marburg virus at the Uganda Virus Research Institute. Currently, 13 patients have been admitted to the hospital, and their contacts are listed for daily follow-up. The latest confirmed case was admitted to an Ibanda district isolation ward on Oct. 26. The WHO and international partners, including the CDC, the Uganda Red Cross, African Field Epidemiology Network and Médecins-Sans-Frontières, are supporting the national authorities in outbreak investigation and response. The national task force has identified additional health care workers and epidemiologists to strengthen the teams in the field. Training of health workers on infection prevention and control, surveillance and clinical case management is ongoing, and the first shipment of personal protective equipment arrived recently. WHO and its partners have deployed additional staff to support the response teams. As the investigation into the outbreak continues, WHO and partners continue to support the national authorities as needed in the areas of coordination, infection prevention and control, surveillance, epidemiology, public information and social mobilization, anthropological analysis and logistics for outbreak response. Neighboring countries have been contacted to strengthen cross-border surveillance and preparedness to prevent cross border spread of the outbreak.

Kenyan economy likely to grow up to 6 pct in 2013: IMF
2/14/13 NAIROBI (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund expects the Kenyan economy to grow at least 5.5 to 6 pct this year from an estimated 4.5 to 5 percent in 2012, assuming elections in March go smoothly, a senior fund official said.
"Kenya has stayed the course of its economic reforms and this has worked quite well," Domenico Fanizza, who has been leading a mission to Kenya under the IMF's Extended Credit Facility, told a news conference on Thursday.
Kenya has forecast 5 percent plus growth this year.
Kenya's year-on-year inflation rate rose for the first time in thirteen months in January and analysts said it could rise further in the coming months on currency weakness and election-related spending. Inflation rose to 3.67 percent in January from 3.20 percent in December.
The rate of inflation in January was still well within the government's medium-term target of 5 percent, plus or minus two percentage points.
The central bank began cutting the country's high interest rates last July after inflation tumbled from a November 2011 peak of just under 20 percent. The policy lending rate now stands at 9.5 percent.
Violent Seismic Activity Tearing Africa in Two
January 2011 High-Speed Geology
The fissures began appearing years ago. But in recent months, seismic activity has accelerated in northeastern Africa as the continent breaks apart in slow motion. Researchers say that lava in the region is consistent with magma normally seen on the sea floor -- and that water will ultimately cover the desert.
Cynthia Ebinger, a geologist from the University of Rochester in New York, could hardly believe what the caller from the deserts of Ethiopia was saying. It was an employee at a mineralogy company -- and he reported that the famous Erta Ale volcano in northeastern Ethiopia was erupting. Ebinger, who has studied the volcano for years, was taken aback. The volcano's crater had always been filled with a bubbling soup of silver-black lava, but it had been decades since its last eruption.
The call came last November. And Ebinger immediately flew to Ethiopia with some fellow researchers. "The volcano was bubbling over; flaming-red lava was shooting up into the sky," Ebinger told SPIEGEL ONLINE.
The earth is in upheaval in northeastern Africa, and the region is changing quickly. The desert floor is quaking and splitting open, volcanoes are boiling over, and seawaters are encroaching upon the land. Africa, researchers are certain, is splitting apart at a rate rarely seen in geology.
The first fracture appeared millions of years ago, resulting in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The second fracture, stretching south from Ethiopia to Mozambique, is known as the Great Rift Valley, and it is lined with several volcanoes. Millions of years from now, it too will be filled with seawater.
Could Go Quickly
But in the Danakil Depression, in the northern part of the valley, the ocean could arrive much sooner. There, low, 25 meter (82 foot) hills are the only thing holding back the waters of the Red Sea. The land behind them has already dropped dozens of meters from previous levels and white salt deposits on the desert floor testify to past encroachments of the sea. But lava soon choked off its access.
For now, no one can really say when the sea will finally flood the desert. But when it does, it could go quickly. "The hills could sink in a matter of days," Tim Wright, a fellow at the University of Leeds' School of Earth and Environment, said at a recent conference hosted by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in San Francisco.
In the last five years, the geologic transformation of northeastern Africa has "accelerated dramatically," says Wright. Indeed, the process is going much faster than many had anticipated. In recent years, geologists had measured just a few millimeters of movement each year. "But now the earth is opening up by the meter," says Loraine Field, a scholar at the University of Bristol who also attended the conference.
Earth tremors cause deep fissures to form in the desert floor and the ground in East Africa is shattering like broken glass. Researchers in the Gulf of Tadjoura, which juts into Djibouti from the Gulf of Aden, have recently registered a barrage of seismic shocks. "The quakes are happening on the mid-ocean ridge," Ebinger reports.
Shifting Tectonic Plates
Lava gushes out of fissures in these underwater mountain ranges to constantly create new earth crust -- when it hardens, it becomes part of the sea floor. As the magma surges upward, it spreads the ocean floor on both sides, shifting tectonic plates and causing tremors.
In recent months, the quaking in the Gulf of Tadjoura has been getting closer and closer to the coastline. As Ebinger explains, the splitting of the ocean floor will gradually extend to dry land. This is already the case along some fault lines in the Ethiopian desert, creating a geological spectacle that can otherwise only be witnessed deep below the surface of the ocean.
Even the pattern of earthquakes supports the conclusion that the desert landscape is transforming into a deep seafloor, according to a recent article in the Journal of Geophysical Research published by Zhaohui Yang and Wang-Ping Chen, two geologists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The researchers have recorded several strong earthquakes at a shallow depth in northeastern Africa similar to ones that are otherwise only seen on mid-ocean ridges far out at sea.
In recent months, researchers have also recorded an up-tick in volcanic activity. Indeed, geologists have discovered volcanic eruptions near the earth's surface at 22 places in the Afar Triangle in northeastern Africa. Magma has caused fissures up to eight meters (26 feet) wide to open up in the ground, reports Derek Keir from the University of Leeds. While most of the magma remains beneath the surface, in places like Erta Ale it has made its way above ground.
An Ocean Without Water
Scientists have also noted that the kind of magma bubbling up in the region is the type otherwise only seen spewing forth from mid-ocean ridges deep below the water's surface. One of its signature characteristics is a low proportion of silicic acid. The magma coming out of Erta Ale has the same chemical composition as the kind that emerges from deep-sea volcanoes. The entire region increasingly resembles an ocean floor -- one without water.
The new burst in activity began in 2005, when a 60-kilometer-long fissure suddenly formed in the Afar Depression. Since then, roughly 3.5 cubic kilometers of magma have gushed forth, according to Tim Wright -- enough to cover the entire area of London to an average person's height.
From a geological perspective, the speed with which the magma is pushing forth is astonishing. It has been channeling its way through the rock below the earth's surface at speeds of up to 30 meters per minute, reports Eric Jacques from the Institute of Earth Physics of Paris. Satellite measurements attest to the consequences: In one 200-kilometer stretch welling up with magma, the ground looks like asphalt on a hot summer day. Magma is also pooling up under the Dabbahu Volcano in northern Ethiopia, Lorraine Field reported in San Francisco.
Continuing to Expand
The satellite data has also shown that a much larger area has been scarred by fissures than previously assumed, says Keir. Subterranean currents of magma are also causing ground temperatures to spike in eastern Egypt, a team of geologists from Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics recently reported in Seismological Research Letters. At the AGU conference, Columbia University's James Gaherty reported that magma eruptions have ripped a 17-kilometer gash into the desert floor in the northern part of Malawi and that the lateral pressure they have exerted has even lifted the surrounding earth up to 50 centimeters (20 inches) in places.
The most violent upsurge of magma in recent years, though, happened in an unexpected place. In May 2009, a subterranean volcano erupted in Saudi Arabia. A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 accompanied by tens of thousands of milder tremors forced 30,000 to seek shelter. Magma spewed out of the ground in an area about the size of Berlin and Hamburg combined, Sigurjon Jonsson from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology reported at the AGU meeting. The fact that the eruption took place almost 200 kilometers (124 miles) away from the fault line in North Africa "surprised all of us," says Cynthia Ebinger. And the world's largest geological construction site continues to expand. Loraine Field confirms that more and more magna is pushing its way to the earth's surface, adding that: "The magma chamber is reloading."
Oxford University's David Ferguson predicts a considerable increase in volcanic eruptions and earthquakes in the region over the next decade. They will, he says, "become of increasingly large magnitude."

Kenya mall attack: Somali terror group may include Americans
'Al Shabab is no longer a Somalia problem or a Somalia baby. It is now an international problem,' says one analyst in response to the Kenyan mall attack.
Even as gunfire from Nairobi's Westgate mall siege continued, Kenyan government officials say that nearly all hostages trapped since Saturday have been rescued from the shopping complex, hours after special forces undertook a final assault on Al Shabab militants.
“The number of hostages in the building is minimal if ... there are any left in the building,” said Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary in charge of Internal Security, Joseph Ole Lenku, adding that Kenyan forces were in control of all four floors. The official death toll is now 62, including several diplomats and relatives of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The attacks, claimed by Al Shabab, a Somalia-based Islamist radical group whose name means "the youth," began Saturday when cars of men carrying guns pulled up to the entrance of the Westgate, killing and taking hostages, and unleashing two days of mayhem and bloodshed that have shocked Kenya.
Kenyan forces, supported by FBI and special Israeli forces, battled the 10-15 militants for a third day Monday, amid dramatic explosions and smoke. More than 1,000 people were rescued during the attack, whose brutality has shocked the nation and attracted international condemnation.
The operation is widely being seen as both a payback to Kenya for driving Al Shabab out of urban centers in Somalia, and a publicity initiative to showcase the group's international character, even as its fortunes have been on the wane in its area of principal concern, which is Somalia proper.
In 2010, the group claimed responsibility for bombing a soccer stadium in Uganda, killing more than 70 people. Kenya said it was forced to send troops into Somalia in 2011 after the militants carried a series of attacks inside Kenya's borders. Kenya's 4,000 forces have since been integrated into an African Union mission in Somalia.
Al Shabab has suffered a series of defeats, largely at the hands of Kenyan troops or their local proxies, who have driven the militants out of a key stronghold, the port of Kismayo. But the new Somali government accuses Kenya of creating a new proxy state called Jubaland along the common border of the two states.
“Kenya has done a good job in Somalia. They had been neutral up until 2011. The longer they stay in Somalia, the more they will be seen as an occupying force,” says Abdiwahab Shiekh Abdisamad, a Nairobi-based expert on Horn of Africa issues.
On Monday, Al Shabab claimed via Twitter that three of the attackers were American-based, with two of them coming from Minnesota, whose Twin City area has one of the largest single Somali communities in the US, with more than 80,000 people.
The Minnesotans are said to be Ahmed Mohammed Isse of St. Paul and Abdifatah Osman Keenadiid of Minneapolis. Another attacker is Mustafe Noorudiin of Kansas. The militants also supposedly include members from Canada, Finland and the UK. Early eyewitness accounts of the militant by Kenyans suggest they are mostly of ethnic Somali descent.
The FBI is investigating the claims, according to several news sources, and bureau spokesmen in several parts of the United States, including Boston, said it was too early to confirm reports, after a Portland media outlet called to confirm whether one of the attackers was from Maine, as Shabab allegedly reported.
Still, “Al Shabab is no longer a Somalia problem or a Somalia baby. It is now an international problem,” says Mr. Abdisamad.
The Westgate mall is an upscale complex of cafés, shops, and food courts frequented by officials from foreign mission and the United Nations complex a couple miles away. In addition to Al Shabab's stated anger over Kenya's role in Somalia, commentators have noted that Westgate is partly Israeli-owned.
Al Shabab said through a Twitter post that it conducted the attack. Earlier reports and some survivors said the attackers included women. But Mr. Lenku said these were men who had dressed as women to camouflage themselves.
Al Shabab's Twitter account, started last winter, included the statement: “War is war! We promise Kenyans will pay the ultimate price like Ethiopians did in 1998, Americans did 1993… 4000 Kenyans barricading themselves behind our children and women. Our Mujahideen will wipe Kenya off map.”
Officials at the social media firm reportedly shut down the militant group's account on Sunday night.
According to Abdisamad, many of the fighters involved in the attack were not from Somalia, and the group's high-profile attack is being done to give it publicity needed in its own ranks and abroad.
“Al Shabab has a network of supporters from around the world,” he said. “But I think they are being defeated and they are now looking for relevance. What we are seeing are last kick of a dying horse.”
A report from the All Africa website cites clerics calling the attacks "criminal" and not "jihadi" and notes an Islamic conference on extremism held in Somalia last week where 126 religious leaders from Somalia condemned Al Shabab as lacking in Islamic "correctness," and the "wrong path," and urged Somalis not to join it.
Today The Daily Beast ran a piece from Jamie Dettmer offering that some counterterrorism experts are concerned that some ethnic Somalis from Minneapolis-St. Paul could have been in the attack, since others from the Somali community there have traveled to and been killed in the Horn of Africa. The Daily Beast included this reporting:
This year, Al-Shabab posted a 40-minute recruitment video, “Minnesota’s Martyrs: The Path to Paradise,” that follows three Americans from the Twin Cities as they go to training camps in Somalia and die for the jihadist cause. One of the young men urges others to follow, saying, “This is the real Disneyland. You need to come here and join us!” The narrator praises the trio as the “Minnesotan martyrs” whose “decisive moment” came when they were martyred in a jihad against foreign troops in Somalia.
One of the three featured was Troy Kastigar, a convert to Islam who was killed in Mogadishu in September 2009, about 10 months after arriving from Minnesota, according to the video. Three other Somali-Americans—Abdisalan Hussein Ali, Farah Mohamed Beledi, and Shirwa Ahmed—became Al-Shabab suicide bombers, dying in blasts in Mogadishu in recent years.

Westgate mall attack: how Kenya media exposed the army's botched response
2 November 2013 Kenyans should resist attempts to introduce legislation that would restrict press freedom.
Nairobi senator Mike Sonko is eccentric, slightly erratic and blessed with a popular touch and a political nous that belie his clownish persona.
Following the Westgate attacks, he bought 8 parachutes for him and his staff of 7 to glide out of their 25th-floor office at the Kenyatta Conference Centre and down to safety in the event of terrorists storming the building.
The siege at the mall and the cruelty of the attackers, who murdered pregnant women and children attending a cooking competition shocked people around the world.
But Kenyans must also take in the shocking revelations of official bungling on an epic, even criminal scale that characterised the response to the attack.
Kenya has a famously vibrant media sector. It has faced criticism in the past, but after Westgate it was at its finest. The Daily Nation, Kenya's best-selling newspaper, revealed that army special forces soldiers shot the commander of an elite police unit in a friendly-fire incident that prompted the Israeli-trained police squad to pull out of the rescue mission.
The most devastating news was video footage that showed soldiers helping themselves to expensive phones and other items at Westgate after they had shelled the terrorists' hideout.
(Was it really accidental? Or was this a false flag everyone wasnt in on? )
The Kenyan military now has a serious credibility problem following revelations that troops could not resist the temptation to line their pockets.
In rare move, Uganda leader publicly tests for HIV
KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Uganda's president tested for HIV in public on Friday to encourage millions of untested people to check their status, a critical step to stemming the spread of the virus in the East African country.
Public leaders rarely test for HIV in public in Uganda, despite recommendations from health workers that it would set a good example in a country that has seen HIV infection rates increasing. Uganda was once a global leader in efforts to fight AIDS.
Not all government officials at the Friday event in the capital, Kampala, joined the president in testing.
Ugandan officials have said they want to test 15 million people by the end of 2014. They acknowledge it will be hard to reach that target, the reason they want the president to be a "role model."
"Therefore, all Ugandans, test (for HIV). Find out your status and let the state and health workers manage you accordingly," said President Yoweri Museveni.
The HIV rate in Uganda stands at 7.3 percent, up from 6.4 percent in 2005, according to a 2011 survey by Uganda's Ministry of Health. Ugandan officials who presided over its reduction from 18 percent in 1992 to 6.4 percent in 2005 say they are confounded by the increase.
Ugandans health officials say more married couples are getting infected, in part because of what campaigners have dubbed a "sexual network" in which married Ugandans maintain secret lovers. One billboard in Kampala urges couples to "put your love to the test" by testing for HIV.
Museveni and his wife are "leading by example in a bid to roll back the HIV epidemic in Uganda," the Uganda AIDS Commission, the local body tasked with fighting AIDS, said, though the first lady did not attend the event where Museveni was tested.
Experts say HIV testing is critical to preventing new infections because those who know their status are less likely to engage in risky sexual behavior. But getting people to test for HIV has proved difficult in Uganda, where rampant stigma persists and where thousands get infected each year.
The rise in new infections is stretching the ability of Uganda's government and donors to provide HIV and AIDS treatment. More than 500,000 Ugandans need AIDS treatment, many accessing it through the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR.
If Ugandans reach their testing goal, at least 400,000 more people will likely be in need of AIDS treatment, according to Musa Bungudu, the Uganda coordinator for the United Nations' AIDS agency.
Uganda once earned a global reputation for successfully putting in place a policy called ABC: Abstain, be faithful, or use condoms. Students of a certain generation were shown videos of the devastating toll of AIDS on the human body, and then told to postpone the first act of intercourse. But critics of Uganda's policy to fight AIDS say the country recently has focused more on treatment rather than prevention.
Uganda's government now has added male circumcision to the plan to fight HIV and AIDS, in response to studies showing the procedure reduces the risk among African men of getting HIV in half.
Kenyans chase down and catch cheetahs
15 November 2013 Four villagers in north-east Kenya have chased down and captured two cheetahs which were killing their goats.
The owner of the goats told the BBC that the cheetahs had been picking off his animals one by one, day by day.
The men waited until the hottest part of the day before launching the chase over a distance of four miles (6.4km).
The cheetahs got so tired they could not run any more. The villagers captured them alive and handed them over to the Kenya Wildlife Service.
Pilot deliberately crashed Mozambique plane
22 December 2013 The pilot of a Mozambican airliner that crashed in Namibia deliberately brought the plane down, aviation experts in Mozambique believe.
Mozambican Airlines flight TM470 left the capital Maputo bound for Angola on 29 November, but crashed, killing all 33 people all board.
The Civil Aviation Institute said the pilot made a "deliberate series of manoeuvres" causing the crash.
The pilot's motives are unknown, and the investigation is continuing.
The plane went down in heavy rain in Namibia's Bwabwata National Park.
the pilot, Hermino dos Santos Fernandes, had a "clear intention" to crash.
Dos Santos Fernandes locked himself in the cockpit, and did not allow his co-pilot back inside until moments before the plane hit the ground, Mr Abreu said.
During these actions you can hear low and high-intensity alarm signals and repeated beating against the door with demands to come into the cockpit, he was quoted as saying by state news agency AIM.
The reasons which may have given rise to this behaviour are unknown.

May 16, 2014 One explosion was in a minibus and the second at the Gikomba market in the center of the Kenyan capital of Nairobi. The blasts which killed at least 13 people and injured 70 Friday were caused by grenades, according to the town’s police commander. Ugandan court invalidates anti-gay law
KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A Ugandan court on Friday invalidated an anti-gay bill signed into law earlier this year, saying the measure is illegal because it was passed during a parliamentary session that lacked a quorum.
The panel of five judges on the East African country's Constitutional Court said the speaker of parliament acted illegally when she allowed a vote on the measure despite at least three objections — including from the country's prime minister — over a lack of a quorum when the bill was passed on Dec. 20.
"The speaker was obliged to ensure that there was a quorum," the court said in its ruling. "We come to the conclusion that she acted illegally."
The ruling was made before a courtroom packed with Ugandans opposing or supporting the measure. Activists erupted in loud cheers after the court ruled the law is now "null and void."
The anti-gay measure provided for jail terms of up to life for those convicted of engaging in gay sex. It also allowed lengthy jail terms for those convicted of the offenses of "attempted homosexuality" as well as "promotion of homosexuality."
Frank Mugisha, a Ugandan gay leader, said the ruling Friday was a "step forward" for gay rights even though he was concerned about possible retaliation.
Ugandan lawyer Ladislaus Rwakafuuzi, an attorney for the activists, said the ruling "upholds the rule of law and constitutionalism in Uganda."
Lawyers and activists challenged the anti-gay law after it was enacted in February on the grounds that it was illegally passed and that it violated certain rights guaranteed in Uganda's constitution.
The court ruled Friday that the activists' entire petition had been disposed of since the law was illegally passed in the first place. This means there will be no further hearings about the activists' argument that the anti-gay measure discriminated against some Ugandans in violation of the country's constitution.
Nicholas Opiyo, a Ugandan lawyer who was among the petitioners, welcomed the ruling but said there is still a missed opportunity to debate the substance of the law. "The ideal situation would have been to deal with the other issues of the law, to sort out this thing once and for all," Opiyo said.
A colonial-era law that criminalizes sex acts "against the order of nature," still remains in effect in Uganda, allowing for the continued arrests of alleged homosexual offenders, Opiyo said.
Lawmakers will likely also try to reintroduce a new anti-gay measure, he said.
Kosiya Kasibayo, a state attorney, said a decision had not been made on whether to appeal the ruling in the Supreme Court, Uganda's highest court.
The anti-gay measure was enacted on Feb. 24 by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who said he wanted to deter Western groups from promoting homosexuality among African children.
Although the legislation has wide support in Uganda, it has been condemned in the West and rights groups have described it as draconian. The U.S., which wants the law repealed, has withheld or redirected funding to some Ugandan institutions accused of involvement in rights abuses.
The ruling Friday may also win the Ugandan delegation a softer landing in the U.S. next week as it heads to Washington for a gathering led by President Barack Obama.

The Greatest Hostage Rescue in History
Operation Entebbe was a successful counter-terrorist hostage-rescue mission carried out by commandos of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at Entebbe Airport in Uganda on 4 July 1976. On 27 June an Air France plane with 248 passengers was hijacked by PLO. The hijackers had the stated objective to free 40 Palestinian terrorists imprisoned in Israel in exchange for the hostages.
The Tel Aviv to Paris flight was diverted after a stopover in Athens via Benghazi to Entebbe, Uganda. The Ugandan government supported the hijackers, and dictator Idi Amin personally welcomed them. After moving all hostages from the aircraft to an airport building, the hijackers separated Jews from the larger group and forced them into a separate room.
The 148 non-Israeli hostages were released and flown out to Paris.

The founder discovered the true religion in the early 20th century, converting himself and sweeping many after him.
