CERN, Hadron, Higgs boson appear to be the same project.
In a way this is interesting.  I have heard a theory that GOD SANG creation into existence.  Lovely thought.

The LHC Sound
project aims to allow physicists at Cern in Geneva to ‘listen’ to the data in order to more easily identify the crucial ‘Higgs boson’ particle.
Finding the Higgs boson – also known as the God particle – is the primary aim of the LHC experiment because it will provide an insight into the nature of all matter.
It is hoped the subatomic particle will emerge from the 27km circular tunnel under the Swiss-French border where beams of proton particles are being smashed together.

LHC Sound, a collaboration of particle physicists, musicians and artists in London, has converted data expected from collisions into sounds in a process called sonification.
The data was provided by the LHC's Atlas experiment which includes a calorimeter measuring the energy from collisions.
The note and pitch of the sound varies with the amount of energy recorded.
LHC Sound is planning live performances of the data during the summer but early simulations of the particles can be heard here.

Dr Lily Asquith, one of the team, explained in a recent blog entry:
“Sound seems the perfect tool with which to represent the complexity of the data; our ears are superb at locating the source and location of sounds relative to one another,
we can hear a vast range of frequencies and distinguish timbres (different instruments) before they have even played a full cycle.


CERN Council approves the Laboratory's Medium Term Plan
Geneva, 17 September 2010

During an intense series of meetings, which concludes today, the CERN1 Council overwhelmingly approved the laboratory's revised Medium Term Plan for the period 2011 to 2015.
The plan was originally presented to Council at its June session, at which Council asked CERN management to introduce cost-saving measures.
In the revised plan, Member State contributions will be reduced by a total 135MCHF over the five-year period,
with measures to consolidate CERN’s social security systems bringing the total reduction to the programme to 343MCHF.
The plan protects the flagship LHC programme, achieving cost savings by slowing down the pace of other programmes. CERN management considers this a good result for the Laboratory given the current financial environment.

"The plan we presented to Council is firmly science-driven," said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. "It reduces spending on research and consolidation through careful and responsible adjustment of the pace originally foreseen in a way that does not compromise the future research programme unduly. The reductions will be painful, but in the current financial environment, they are fair."
Among the programmes to be affected is the upgrade to the LHC's beam intensity, which will allow the experiments to accumulate data at a faster rate. This will now proceed later than originally planned, with a new linear accelerator being connected in 2016 instead of 2015.

There will be no running of CERN's accelerators in 2012. The decision to not run the LHC in 2012 had already been taken in February for purely technical reasons. The whole CERN accelerator complex will now join the LHC in a year-long shutdown.

Looking further ahead, the plan allows for continuing R&D on the compact linear collider study, CLIC, and high-intensity proton sources, but at a slower pace than originally foreseen. Work on CLIC may provide technology for the development of a new machine to study in depth the discoveries made by the LHC, while high-intensity proton sources will allow CERN to play its part in global developments for neutrino physics.
"Council's decision is an important one for European science," said Council president Michel Spiro. “Although Council acknowledges that the cuts will be painful, we recognise the excellent performance of the LHC and its detectors, and consequently took decisions that minimise the disruption to CERN and its global user community. Council’s decision underlines Europe's commitment to basic research, and is testimony to the robustness of the CERN model of international collaboration in science. Council is grateful for the pragmatism, and the realism of the CERN management in proposing real cost savings in time of crisis."

the liquid explosive made of up, down and strange quarks, responsible of the ice-9 reactions that cause supernovas.
CERN affirms there is a 65-70% of chances of producing negative strangelets will provoke the ice-9 reaction
(name taken from Cat and Cradle’s book in which a physicist destroys the world throwing a new type of water that freezes the planet,
since an ice-9 reaction will condensate the planet in a 15 kilometers ultra-dense strange star).

Thus CERN has been lying and it is playing with all mankind a Quantum Russian Roulette game with 4 shots out of 6. 66% chances of extinction.
This will be even if we survive the biggest genocide of history, calculated multiplying probability and victims: 66% x 6.6 billions=4.4 billions, 1000 times the Holocaust.
The experiment will start in 45 days now. We might be living the last month of our existence as individuals and as a species.
Fall can be indeed the Fall of Man. And yet, the experiment is not stopped.

Particles from Hayabusa space probe could contain extraterrestrial life
October  2010  Scientists are said to have discovered minute particles that may contain extraterrestrial life from outside Earth.
An analysis conducted by electronic microscopes shows the particles containing characteristics that are different from dust or aluminium powder samples already collected.
The particles were believed to have originated from Earth, the Yomiuri newspaper and Kyodo News agency reported.

Officials from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) are expected to detail the find later on Wednesday. No further details were available.
Japan's space agency has already identified "minute particles" of what its scientists believed were asteroid dust collected by the probe.
Scientists hope the asteroid samples could help reveal secrets about the origins of the solar system.
The spacecraft returned to Earth in the Australian outback in June after a 3-billion-mile journey that took more than seven years.

Hayabusa, which means "falcon" in Japanese, was launched in 2003 and became the first probe to land on the surface of an asteroid and gather particles from the space rock.
After spending around 30 minutes on the asteroid it then made the long trip home again.
It failed to fire a projectile into the surface of the asteroid, to kick up dust that could then be collected, but Japanese scientists hope sufficient particles were kicked up when it touched down to be collected.
Despite numerous technical glitches – including a malfunctioning gyroscope and a fuel leak – experts are hopeful that Hayabusa has achieved its goals.
JAXA officials are conducting the lengthy examination of the Hayabusa's multilayer sample canister together with researchers from Nasa, the American space agency.

Scientists chasing the elusive particle known as the Higgs boson -- thought to be the origin of mass -- expressed disappointment when a U.S. lab turned up zip.
Scientists with the Tevatron particle accelerator at Fermilab in Batavia, Ill., near Chicago, released the results of a months-long effort to confirm the existence of the so-called "God particle," Fox News reported Friday.

"We do not see the signal," Dmitri Denisov, staff scientist at Fermilab, told the news network. "If it existed, we would see it. But when we look at our data, we basically see nothing."
"At this point I'd say the chances are 50-50 for the Higgs to exist at all," Denisov said.

The results - submitted Friday to the science journal Physical Review Letters - represent a setback for scientists who have been following the quest for the particle.
Contacted by Fox News in Geneva, Switzerland, a spokesman for European Organization for Nuclear Research -- which operates the Large Hadron Collider atom smasher -- said it was too soon for the lab to release any analysis, but something could be released in a few weeks.

"Still too early to get excited, I'm afraid," spokesman James Gilies said. "I think this story will reach a conclusion at the main summer conferences this year -- end of July. By then, the LHC [Large Hadron Collider] experiments will have analyzed enough data to be able to say something."

CERN Could be About to Start Researching LENR Following Recent Colloquium

Settle in, CERN the multinational research group based in Europe had a colloquium on Low Energy Nuclear Reactions last Thursday.  There was no big news, but there is interesting news out of Japan.  The file downloads are a treasure trove of useful information.
To start is the 40-page PDF presentation by Yogendra Srivastava from the University of Perugia.  The file is a set of the slides shown during the presentation and is complete enough to get a good feel for the narrative.  This is the first complete enough and extensive enough presentation to put real confidence into the Widom Preperata – Larsen theory(s).  The theory(s) may well turn out to be the facts, and if the connections Srivastava uses turn out to be accurate metaphors, the chance to inform the public is looking up and could very well prompt some public support.
Srivastava gets the technology overview going by page 9 and over the following ten pages covers the most likely and experimentally validated energy inputs.  From electricity and magnetic to elastic piezoelectric, the prevailing influence of a theoretical view from Widom the evidence is compelling that with a good enough kit many experimenters can get in on the progress.

Earthquakes, Strangelets and Black Holes

The first hints that the LHC is seriously damaging life on Earth will come from an increase on earthquake and volcano activity.  This  is due to the fact that the LHC is creating a powerful gravito-magnetic field, a ‘ring’ of charged, massive particles that can interact with the magnetic fields of the magma and Earth’s center.
Disturbances on the Earth’s magnetic field by the magnets of the LHC and specially the charged positive c-speed flow of protons can come through 3 different processes:

The possibility that the 27 kilometers continuous ring of charged protons can interact with self-similar charged flows in the magma or earth’s center, creating a powerful electro-magnetic effect, displacing magma and causing earthquakes and volcano activity. It is a fact that the first day that the charged, proton ring was created in 2008 it caused 4 significant Earthquakes, the first one in Iran, seconds after it was powered up.
The proton, charged ring could act as a new pole of a magnetic field with Earth’s inner fields.

- The creation of strange liquid, already produced in the first experiments, (Kaons at the LHC, hyperons at RHIC) could also provoke explosions in the magma. If stable, it will leak in increasing quantities to the center of the Earth. Some of it will remain in the center, forming the seed of a strangelet. Some will accrete and/or explode in the mantle, in highly energetic, tiny bombs.

- The creation of gravitational waves. The LHC is a 27 Kilometer ring of positive charged massive particles, turning at c -speed. This is essentially equivalent to the ‘singularity’ of a Kerr black hole -  a rotating c-speed charged ring of mass. Since a Kerr singularity can produce transversal gravitational waves;  the LHC might produce perpendicular  gravitational waves that will sink straight towards the center of the Earth (in a similar process a rotating , charged coil is used to produce electromagnetic waves). If so those Gravitational waves, which are undetectable will affect magnetic fields, provoking earthquake waves and increase volcano activity.

Each time the machine increases its speed and ‘luminosity’ (mass), as CERN powers up the LHC, we should observe an increase of earthquakes and collateral deaths, till the 2 possible ‘doomsday events’ happen:

This is as big as the, well, big bang theory: Scientists working at the world's largest atom smasher say they have enough evidence of the long-sought-after Higgs boson.
To the layman, the Higgs boson is the "God particle" and a key puzzle piece in the scientific explanation of the origin of the universe. Physicists around the globe—and perhaps elsewhere, given the size of the universe—have invested billions of dollars in research and have been hunting for the Higgs boson for decades.
Researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (or CERN) are expected to announce Wednesday that they have proof of its existence, reports The Associated Press.
The Higgs boson appeared 13.7 billion years ago in the chaos of the Big Bang and turned the flying debris into galaxies, stars and planets.

which appears to be the boson imagined and named half a century ago by theoretical physicist Peter Higgs.
"We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature," CERN director general Rolf Heuer told a gathering of scientists and the world's media near Geneva.
"The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics,
which will pin down the new particle's properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe."
Two independent studies of data produced by smashing proton particles together at CERN's Large Hadron Collider
produced a convergent near-certainty on the existence of the new particle. It is unclear whether it is exactly the boson Higgs described.

8/14/12 - CERN, the European physics lab responsible for discovering the Higgs boson just last month, has scored another major achievement in the realm of physics. No, scientists there haven't discovered any freaky new particles — they're just doing some pretty cool things with existing particles. Or should we say hot things: CERN scientists have created a "quark-gluon plasma" that clocks in at a balmy 5.5 trillion degrees.

Researchers believe that the mass of sub-atomic particles they created approximates the state of the universe immediately after the Big Bang. The ingredients for the mix were quite simple: two lead atoms, smashed.

When you're dealing with temperatures as high as these, collecting a precise measurement can be difficult. Scientists are only now working on the calculations to determine the exact quantity of heat present, but they're confident that the result will be greater than the previous high temperature of 4 trillion degrees.

Atom Smasher Creates New Kind of Matter

Collisions between particles inside the Large Hadron Collider atom smasher have created what looks like a new form of matter.

The new kind of matter is called color-glass condensate, and is a liquidlike wave of gluons, which are elementary particles related to the strong force that sticks quarks together inside protons and neutrons (hence they are like "glue").

Scientists didn't expect this kind of matter wouldresult from the typeof particle collisions going on at the Large Hadron Collider at the time. However, it may explain some odd behavior seen inside the machine, which is a giant loop where particles race around underneath Switzerland and France.

When scientists sped up protons (one of the building blocks of atoms) and lead ions (lead atoms, which contain 82 protons each, stripped of their electrons), and crashed them into each other, the resulting explosions liquefied those particles and gave rise to new particles in their wake. Dec 2012 - Here at Categorists, we are very much concerned with that which the brighter minds of this world do to occupy themselves.  Each of us is majoring in, or have majored in sciences in college (Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, and last but not least, Political Science) and a project that I have personally kept close watch over is CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC).  This year, I have spent a great deal of time studying one of the building blocks of the physical world, quantum mechanics, only to find that there are numerous unexplained phenomenon. Apparently, a number of these answers are in the LHC.

Here is a quick synopsis of what CERN is and what the LHC does.  CERN stands for Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire, which translates to European Organization for Nuclear Research.  It’s an international organization that leads the world in laboratory particle physics research.  It is also the proud owner of the most badass particle accelerator to date: the Large Hadron Collider.  It is 17 miles long and cost 7.5 billion Euros to construct. One of its main purposes is to discover the Higgs-Boson particle, which is pretty much the final missing link to the standard model of particle physics.  Aside from that, it is theoretically capable of forming particles of infinite density and chain reaction properties (Strange Matter).  To this day, the Higgs-Boson is still theoretical and the LHC has faced many experiments and complications since it’s induction in 2008.   A large number of people believe that the experiments done at CERN could have catastrophic side effects, such as creating a black hole, here on Earth.

This year, CERN is beginning another set of experiments in hopes to getting that much closer to completing the Standard Model. Scientists at CERN have announced test dates for the rest of the year, as well as some curious dates can be found in the upcoming schedule.  Starting Monday, December 17, 2012 and going through Friday, December 21, 2012, CERN will be launching and running a series of collisions, which are predicted to break records in high voltage collisions already set by the LHC.  With these experiments, the scientists are hoping to create atomic reactions that would provide further information about anti-matter, and the big bang.

The test set for the week of December 17-21, 2012 is the final test before the LHC will shutdown operations for upgrades and will resume operation in 2014, assuming something doesn’t go wrong, in the minds of some of the scientists, terribly right, which causes the end of the world.  I guess we will just have to see what happens.  Let us know what you think, is CERN guilty of a self-fulfilling prophecy of destruction here?

- Scientists are still sorting out the details of last year's discovery of the Higgs boson particle, but add up the numbers and it's not looking good for the future of the universe, scientists said Monday.

"If you use all the physics that we know now and you do what you think is a straightforward calculation, it's bad news," Joseph Lykken, a theoretical physicist with the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, told reporters.
Lykeen spoke before presenting his research at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Boston.

The Unparticle May Lurk in Earth's Mantle

It's a good time to be a particle physicist. The long-sought Higgs boson particle seems finally to have been found at an accelerator in Geneva, and scientists are now hot on the trail of another tiny piece of the universe, this one tied to a new fundamental force of nature.

An experiment using the Earth itself as a source of electrons has narrowed down the search for a new force-bearing particle, placing tighter limits on how big the force it carries can be.

As an added bonus, if the new particle is real, it will shed light on processes and structures inside Earth, say study researchers from Amherst College and the University of Texas at Austin. The experimental results appear in the Feb. 22 issue of the journal Science.

The new force of nature carries what is called long-range spin-spin interaction, said lead study author Larry Hunter, a physicist at Amherst. Short-range spin-spin interactions happen all the time: Magnets stick to the fridge because the electrons in the magnet and those in the fridge's steel exterior are all spinning around in the same direction. 'God particle': Confirmation is 'achingly close'

WASHINGTON (AP) — Physicists in Italy said Wednesday they are achingly close to concluding that what they found last year was the Higgs boson, the elusive "God particle." They need to eliminate one last remote possibility that it's something else.

The long theorized subatomic particle would explain why matter has mass and has been called a missing cornerstone of physics.

With new analyses, scientists are closer to being certain they found the crucial Higgs boson. But they want to be 99.9 percent positive, said Pauline Gagnon, a physicist with the European Center for Nuclear Research.

Last July scientists with the world's largest atom smasher, the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border, announced finding a particle they described as Higgs-like, but wouldn't say it was conclusively the particle. Now thousands of checks show them even closer.

"It looks more and more like a Higgs boson," said Gagnon after an update presented Wednesday at a conference in the Italian Alps.

Gagnon compared finding the Higgs to identifying a specific person. This looks, talks, and sings like a Higgs, but scientists want to make sure it dances like the Higgs before they shout "Eureka."

She said there is only one last thing the particle they found could also be: a graviton. That's another subatomic particle associated with gravitational fields, not mass.

By checking the spin of the particle, scientists will be able to tell if it is a Higgs boson, which is far more likely, or a graviton. If it has no internal spin, it's the Higgs boson; if it has a lot of spin it's a graviton.

Wednesday's presentation was by one team of researchers and another team will present more findings next week.

Physicist Sean Carroll of the California Institute of Technology, who isn't involved in the research, said scientists are just being careful, covering all bases.

Without the Higgs boson to explain why electrons and matter have mass, Carroll said, "there would be no atoms, there would be no chemistry, there would be no life, so that's kind of important."
Physicists claim they have found a Higgs boson

The long-sought subatomic particle, also known as the "God particle," was considered a missing cornerstone of physics.

GENEVA — The search is all but over for a subatomic particle that is a crucial building block of the universe. Physicists announced Thursday they believe they have discovered the subatomic particle predicted nearly a half-century ago, which will go a long way toward explaining what gives electrons and all matter in the universe size and shape.

The elusive particle, called a Higgs boson, was predicted in 1964 to help fill in our understanding of the creation of the universe, which many theorize occurred in a massive explosion known as the Big Bang. The particle was named for Peter Higgs, one of the physicists who proposed its existence, but it later became popularly known as the "God particle." The discovery would be a strong contender for the Nobel Prize. Last July, scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, announced finding a particle they described as Higgs-like, but they stopped short of saying conclusively that it was the same particle or was some version of it.

Scientists have now finished going through the entire set of data. "The preliminary results with the full 2012 data set are magnificent and to me it is clear that we are dealing with a Higgs boson, though we still have a long way to go to know what kind of Higgs boson it is," said Joe Incandela, a physicist who heads one of the two main teams at CERN, each involving several thousand scientists.

Whether or not it is a Higgs boson is demonstrated by how it interacts with other particles and its quantum properties, CERN said in the statement. After checking, scientists said the data "strongly indicates that it is a Higgs boson." The results were announced in a statement by the Geneva-based CERN and released at a physics conference in the Italian Alps.

CERN's atom smasher, the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider that lies beneath the Swiss-French border, has been creating high-energy collisions of protons to investigate how the universe came to be the way it is. The particle's existence helps confirm the theory that objects gain their size and shape when particles interact in an energy field with a key particle, the Higgs boson. The more they attract, so the theory goes, the bigger their mass will be.

Higgs Boson Physicists Snag Nobel Prize

The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to two physicists who predicted the existence of the elusive Higgs boson particle, which is thought to explain why other particles have mass, the committee announced today (Oct. 8 ).

Early forecasts had suggested the Nobel in Physics would go to Peter Higgs, of the United Kingdom, and François Englert, of Belgium, two of the scientists who predicted the existence of the Higgs boson nearly 50 years ago. And indeed after a short delay, the committee awarded the prize jointly to Higgs and Englert "for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider," according to a statement on the Nobel Prize website. Two teams of scientists at the world's largest atom smasher, CERN's Large Hadron Collider, announced last year they had discovered a new particle that was likely the Higgs boson. The particle's identity was then confirmed earlier this year.

The Higgs boson was the last undiscovered piece of the reigning theory of particle physics called the Standard Model. And Englert and Higgs independently published research on the process by which particles get their mass, called the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism. They proposed the existence of the so-called Higgs field, an energy field that pervades space and is thought to imbue particles with mass, along with the theory of particle masses. Englert carried out his research with now-deceased Robert Brout; the Nobel Prize committee's rules dictate the science prizes can't be awarded posthumously.

Scientists create anti-atom beam — but use it for good evil, not evil good

Creating an antimatter beam sounds like something only a mad scientist would do, but there's nothing mad about the beam of antihydrogen atoms that scientists generated for the first time at Europe's CERN research center.

The researchers behind the technical achievement, revealed Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications, say the beam could help them shed new light on deep mysteries: Why do we see so much more matter than antimatter in the universe around us? For that matter, why is there a universe at all?

Theoretically, equal amounts of matter and antimatter should have been created in the Big Bang that gave rise to the cosmos as we know it. But as any "Star Trek" fan knows, matter and antimatter annihilate each other in a flash of energy when they interact. Thus, physicists suspect there must have been some subtle difference that allowed matter to dominate the universe.

Previous particle-smashing experiments have provided a smattering of clues as to the difference, but physicists would really like to address the mystery by studying actual anti-atoms. The problem is that it's hard to keep the atoms in existence long enough to make fine-scale measurements.

Actually, antimatter applications have been around for a long time: Hospitals routinely make use of antielectrons, or positrons, to take internal snapshots of our bodies with PET scanners. And researchers are looking into using beams of antiprotons to treat cancer.

But it's only been in the last three years or so that physicists have been able to combine antiprotons and positrons into whole atoms of antihydrogen and hold them inside a specially designed magnetic trap at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator facility on the Swiss-French border. Even then, it's hard to analyze that antihydrogen because the magnetic field that corrals the anti-atoms also interferes with measurements.

In 2012, scientists from CERN's ALPHA collaboration announced that they finally managed to make the first spectroscopic measurements of anti-atoms inside their trap. Now scientists from a different collaboration at CERN, known as ASACUSA, say their apparatus has created a beam of antihydrogen atoms that can be measured more precisely outside the magnetic trap where they were created. At least 80 of the anti-atoms were detected, 2.7 meters (9 feet) downstream of the production region.

ASACUSA's apparatus makes use of devices with names that would warm the heart of a mad scientist: a superconducting anti-Helmholtz coil, multiple ring electrodes, a microwave cavity and a beam-focusing spin-selector. The result is that energetic anti-atoms can be guided to a region with a weak magnetic field.

"Antihydrogen atoms having no charge, it was a big challenge to transport them from their trap," ASACUSA team leader Yasunori Yamazaki, a researcher from Japan's RIKEN research center, said in a CERN news release. "Our results are very promising for high-precision studies of antihydrogen atoms, particularly the hyperfine structure, one of the two best-known spectroscopic properties of hydrogen. Its measurement in antihydrogen will allow the most sensitive test of matter-antimatter symmetry."

Yamazaki said his team will resume its experiments this summer with a setup that should produce higher-energy beams of antihydrogen atoms for study. Just wait until the mad scientists get wind of that.

Astrophysicist Neil de Grasse Tyson has also sounded the alarm in a hypothetical manner by telling anyone who might want to 'blow up a planet' how to do this CERN's attempt to do so by attempting to 'recreate' the big bang within a man made structure that has frightened Stephen Hawking so much? Do they know that they know that they know what they're doing?

“Ask yourself: how much energy is keeping it together?” Neil deGrasse Tyson told co-host Eugene Mirman on his Star Talk radio show. “Then you put more than that amount of energy into the object. It will explode.”

“In the movie Star Wars, we see the Death Star blow up the planet Alderaan,” Mirman said, reading the question. “Setting aside the question of how [such] a thing would be possible, what would happen to our solar system if the Empire blew up, say, Mars?”

First, deGrasse Tyson said, any Imperial sympathizer looking to make that happen would have to calculate the planet’s binding energy, in order to determine how much energy it would take to overcome the gravitational forces binding the planet together.

“Now you have a device that can pump that energy into your planet and have that planet absorb the energy, rather than have the energy come out the other side, it will completely destroy the planet to smithereens, entirely,” he explained. “So, that’s how one would go about it.”

March 23, 2015 – GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The staggeringly complex LHC ‘atom smasher’ at the CERN centre in Geneva, Switzerland, will be fired up to its highest energy levels ever in a bid to detect – or even create – miniature black holes.

It is even possible that gravity from our own universe may ‘leak’ into this parallel universe, scientists at the LHC say.

The experiment is sure to inflame alarmist critics of the LHC, many of whom initially warned the high energy particle collider would spell the end of our universe with the creation a black hole of its own.

But so far Geneva remains intact and comfortably outside the event horizon.

Indeed the LHC has been spectacularly successful. First scientists proved the existence of the elusive Higgs boson ‘God particle’ – a key building block of the universe – and it is seemingly well on the way to nailing ‘dark matter’ – a previously undetectable theoretical possibility that is now thought to make up the majority of matter in the universe.

But next week’s experiment is considered to be a game changer.

The collider’s power has been doubled now, and it will have many times more power than any other comparable facility in the world, and with that power comes many other unknown potentials. Scientists at CERN believe that next week’s experiment in search of the highly illusive Higgs boson, aka the ‘God Particle’ - could be a game changer.

Mir Faizal, one of the three-strong team of physicists behind the experiment, said: “Just as many parallel sheets of paper, which are two dimensional objects [breadth and length] can exist in a third dimension [height], parallel universes can also exist in higher dimensions.

“We predict that gravity can leak into extra dimensions, and if it does, then miniature black holes can be produced at the LHC.

“Normally, when people think of the multiverse, they think of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, where every possibility is actualised.

“This cannot be tested and so it is philosophy and not science.

“This is not what we mean by parallel universes. What we mean is real universes in extra dimensions.

“As gravity can flow out of our universe into the extra dimensions, such a model can be tested by the detection of mini black holes at the LHC.“We have calculated the energy at which we expect to detect these mini black holes in ‘gravity’s rainbow’ [a new scientific theory].

“If we do detect mini black holes at this energy, then we will know that both gravity’s rainbow and extra dimensions are correct.”

When the LHC is fired up the energy is measured in Tera electron volts – a TeV is 1,000,000,000,000, or one trillion, electron Volts

So far, the LHC has searched for mini black holes at energy levels below 5.3 TeV.

But the latest study says this is too low.

Instead, the model predicts that black holes may form at energy levels of at least 9.5 TeV in six dimensions and 11.9 TeV in 10 dimensions. – Express.

LHC Restarts High-Energy Quest for Exotic Physics

It’s official: After a long 27 month hiatus for upgrades and a 2 month restart, the world’s largest particle accelerator is back in the particle collision business.

As of 10:40 a.m. CET (5:40 a.m. ET), the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was running at record-breaking energies and collecting science data. Physicists now expect the particle collider to run non-stop for the next 3 years. We are in a new era of high-energy particle physics where, for the first time, we don’t exactly know what we’ll find.

“With the LHC back in the collision-production mode, we celebrate the end of two months of beam commissioning,” said CERN Director of Accelerators and Technology Frédérick Bordry in a press release. “It is a great accomplishment and a rewarding moment for all of the teams involved in the work performed during the long shutdown of the LHC, in the powering tests and in the beam commissioning process. All these people have dedicated so much of their time to making this happen.”

Today, LHC engineers and scientists announced they had “stable beams” in the LHC’s 27 kilometer (17 mile) long ring of supercooled electromagnets — meaning the protons that are injected into the experiment are suitable for the numerous detectors linked with the LHC can begin taking science data. Now that stability has been achieved, more protons will be pumped around the accelerator until the LHC has the ability to produce up to 1 billion particle collisions per second.

The prime mission of the LHC during Run 1 (that started in 2008) was to detect and characterize the “missing piece” of the Standard Model, the Higgs boson. This particle, which mediates the Higgs field that is thought to permeate the entire universe, endows all matter with mass. But to detect the Higgs, never before seen particle energies were required. Its historic discovery was announced in July 2012, resulting in the Nobel Prize for Physics being awarded to the physicists who first theorized the Higgs mechanism in the 1960′s.

Now, the power of the LHC has been ramped-up to 13 TeV, almost double the energy that produced the Higgs boson discovery.

“The first 3-year run of the LHC, which culminated with a major discovery in July 2012, was only the start of our journey. It is time for new physics!” said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. “We have seen the first data beginning to flow. Let’s see what they will reveal to us about how our universe works.”

We are truly at the leading edge of science discovery where, over the coming 3 years, our view on the universe could completely change. Although physicists are pinning their hopes on the LHC to produce elusive dark matter particles, an answer to why there is more matter than antimatter in the universe and maybe even provide hints of supersymmetry, they also hope that something entirely unexpected pops out of the data. Should this happen, the data recorded by the LHC’s four main refurbished experiments — ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb — and 3 smaller experiments — TOTEM, LHCf and MoEDAL — could take decades to understand.

“The collisions we are seeing today indicate that the work we have done in the past two years to prepare and improve our detector has been successful and marks the beginning of a new era of exploration of the secrets of nature,” said CMS spokesperson Tiziano Camporesi. “We can hardly express our excitement within the collaboration: this is especially true for the youngest colleagues.”

“Proton-proton collisions will provide essential reference data for the run with heavy-ion beams foreseen for the end of the year, in which the LHC will provide both higher energy and luminosity as compared to run 1,” added ALICE spokesperson Paolo Giubellino. “In addition, we plan to extend the exploration of the intriguing signals that have emerged from Run 1.”

In short, hold onto your hats; over the next 3 years the LHC is going to produce physics in a higher energy regime than ever before, giving humankind a very privileged glimpse into the conditions of the Big Bang, nearly 14 billion years ago, when the first primordial particles condensed from energy to matter. It’s a particle physics archaeology dig of sorts, who knows what we’ll find.

Although predicted for decades, pentaquarks have proved surprisingly difficult to discover, and some physicists were beginning to suspect that an unknown law of nature forbids their production.
