7.7 magnitude quake hits Canada's British Columbia
October 27, 2012 (Reuters)
A powerful earthquake with a 7.7 magnitude hit Canada's Pacific coast province of British Columbia late Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported But there were no immediate reports of damage.
The quake was centered 123 miles south-southwest of Prince Rupert at a depth of 6.2 miles, the USGS said.
Earthquakes Canada said it detected a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in the Haida Gwaii region, placing it 43 miles west-southwest of Queen Charlotte City.
"It was felt across much of north-central B.C., including Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Quesnel, and Houston. There have been no reports of damage at this time," the agency said in a statement on its website.
The quake was not felt in the larger cities of Victoria and Vancouver in the south, a resident in each city told Reuters.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no destructive tsunami was expected from the quake but the West Coast-Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for coastal sections of British Columbia and Alaska.

The October 28th, 2012 (October 27 at the location of the epicenter) M 7.7 earthquake south of Masset, Canada, occurred as a result of oblique-thrust faulting near the plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates. At the location of this event, the Pacific plate moves approximately north-northwest with respect to the North America plate at a rate of approximately 50 mm/yr.
This earthquake is likely associated with relative motion across the Queen Charlotte fault system offshore of British Columbia, Canada. Studies of tectonics in this region suggest plate motions are taken up by strike slip faulting parallel to the plate boundary, accompanied by lesser amounts of thrust motion to accommodate the oblique nature of the plate motion vector between the two plates with respect to the orientation of the main plate boundary fault structure. This oblique component of plate motion may involve either underthrusting of the western edge of the Pacific Plate beneath North America, or be taken up on crustal faults within the North America plate. The October 28th earthquake is consistent with either scenario.

British Columbia Hit by a 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake
October 28, 2012 A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the west coast of British Columbia on Saturday about 8 p.m. local time.
The earthquake produced at least four tsunami waves that reached Hawaii several hours later, prompting many to seek higher ground.
The earthquake was located about 395 miles to the south-southeast of Juneau. The epicenter was at a focal depth of 10.9 miles, in the Queen Charlotte Islands.

Second major quake in British Columbia
October 30, 2012 VANCOUVER, British Columbia - A second major earthquake in three days struck the remote Pacific coast area of British Columbia with a magnitude of 6.2, geologists said.
The U.S. Geological survey said the quake happened Tuesday at 7:29 p.m. about 140 miles southwest of Prince Rupert, or 400 miles north of Vancouver.
It began about 7 miles below the surface, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said.
There were no reports of injuries or damages in the sparsely populated, rugged area and no tsunami warning was issued, the report said.
B.C. earthquake causing concern in Washington state
November 1, 2012 SEATTLE – At the Seismology Lab at the University of Washington, there is concern that the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred on the British Columbia coast over the weekend could affect Washington.
“Earthquakes trigger more earthquakes," said Washington State seismologist John Vidale, who has long studied how different fault zones in Southern California affect each other, and is looking at the potential for the same effects here.
“We need to watch the whole region with extra care,” said Vidale.
The earthquake caused virtually no damage to the sparsely settled group of islands known as Haida Gwaii, formerly named the Queen Charlottes. The quake did cause a small tsunami in Hawaii, but it was the sirens and the warnings that attracted the most attention.
But scientists who study these things say even though there were no collapsed buildings or boats washed inland, make no mistake, a magnitude 7.7 is a big earthquake, considered one of the most significant along the northwest coast in 60 years.
The quake was widely felt in British Columbia, and showed up on instruments in Washington.
Scientists also looked to see if the quake affected volcanos in Washington, and will remain on alert for at least several more weeks. So far, everything is quiet.
The problem, says Vidale, is that the West Coast, from Alaska to northern California, is under tremendous geologic pressure as it’s forced up against the basin that forms the Pacific Ocean.
Release the pressure in a major way along one fault, and it can then add to the pressure on another fault. As of early Monday afternoon, more than 130 aftershocks were recorded, including one more than 100 miles south of the quake’s epicenter, thought to be on the Cascadia Subduction zone.
The subduction zone threatens a much larger quake of approximately a magnitude 9 from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to Cape Mendicino California. The Haida Gwaii quake is not located along a subduction zone.
It's only a matter of time before the "big one" hits here(whether on the West Coast or the New Madrid fault).
6.3 quake Vancouver B.C. Canada
November 07, 2012 at 06:01:51 PM at epicenter
A 6.3-magnitude earthquake occurred off Vancouver Island Wednesday night. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the quake occurred about 182 kilometres southwest of Port Hardy, B.C. around 9 p.m. ET. There were no immediate reports of any damage. No tsunami warnings have been issued. A number of tsunami warnings were issued when a 7.7-magnitude quake struck off B.C.’s coast on Oct. 27, but all were later downgraded. At that time, the coastal area from the north tip of Vancouver Island to Cape Decision, Alaska was in potential danger. The quake was felt across north-central B.C. and some low-lying communities were evacuated as a precaution. –CTV
