A strong 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey, killing 57 people and knocking down
houses in several villages. Minarets of mosques fell - GOOD! This quake is just north of Iraq.
It was followed by over 30 aftershocks, the strongest measuring 5.5. The government said around 100 people were
injured in the quake, which occurred at 4:32 a.m. and caught many people in their sleep.
The village of Okcular is totally flattened. Occular relates to the eye, and Turkey has been in the eye of a self-created storm.
One Okcular resident was woken by the jolt. The temblor also knocked down barns, killing farm animals.
Turkey's Red Crescent organization sent tents and blankets to the region.
Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies on top of the North Anatolian fault.
In 1999, two powerful earthquakes struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.
