Larger Magnitude Quakes Trend Up
January 17, 2010 Holly Deyo
Over the last nearly four decades, the number of larger magnitude earthquake events has increased.
To be objective in this count, we use only higher magnitude quakes. Factoring in seismic events less than 6.0 calls into question data reliability.
Additional monitors installed as well as more sensitive equipment used could account for a greater number of earthquakes recorded.
However, the same can't be said of bigger events. Mag. 6 and greater are considered 'significant' because they are felt over too wide an area,
can inflict too much damage to conceal, and would be picked up by weaker seismometers.
Let's look at 2010 so far.
Using USGS statistics, they show the annual average of Richter 6.0 and greater quakes is 152. We've already racked up 9 events in the first two weeks this year.
If this trend continued, we would see 234 significant shakes and the seismic events plotted below would literally be off the chart.
For Mag. 7 quakes, we're off to a ripper start with TWO events in the first 12 days of 2010. On average, only 17 Richter 7's strike annually.
First the Solomon Islands were hit with a 7.1 on Jan. 4. Then just eights days later a 7.0 devastated Haiti.
Either Earth is flushing out seismic tension early, or it's going to be a busy year.
It will be interesting to see if quake activity kicks up in California after the "unrelenting rain" forecast for next week.
Not only does massive moisture promote landslides, it's also known to "lubricate' earthquake faults and add weight on underlying rock.

Extraordinary Number of US Quakes Still Climbing

The shaking hasn't stopped after a 7.2 earthquake rattled the U.S. and Mexico Easter Sunday. Yesterday around 2 a.m. local time, a respectable 4.5 quake rattled San Diego, which was followed by more than a dozen Richter 3's in the same area.
The most events I can ever recall for the U.S. was 1,482 on May 3, 2008. Normally the USGS registers around 700-800 events in America that show on the US maps. This includes all quakes occurring in Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico. There's a lot of real estate where quakes can shake.
Maps start to look interesting when they hit 1,100 shakes. Aftershocks from the Easter quake have rocketed this tally way beyond anything we've experienced in recent years. U.S. quakes are approaching the 4,000 ground breaking benchmark.
When you click the map on the right, you can read the number of quake events both for the Cal-Nevada area as well as the U.S. total. Over 3,700 quakes have hit the U.S in the last week. Of those, these areas account for 161 shakes: Puerto Rico 37, Hawaii 7, and Alaska 117. Another 285 are scattered throughout Washington, Yellowstone/Montana, Utah and in a "smiley face" across New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri. That leaves the vast majority over 3,270 pummeling California. That is mighty!
Because so many earthquakes have occurred atop each other, it's hard to get a good grasp of just how many have struck since the jaw-rattling 7.2. Clicking the top map brings up a much larger version showing Mexico and southern California.
Quakes are concentrated right on the border and extend southeast to the Baja Peninsula and north to the Salton Sea. The whole area is positively inflamed with quake activity.
The small inset maps only tracks Mag. 1+ quakes for a week before they fall off. It's unfortunate that the larger "green" map plots events in gray since they're harder to see. However, the more you study the map, you'll be surprised how many "stars" your eyes pick up.
The May 4th major event is designated in red and looks like it happened after the rest. This quake had to be marked in again since it was buried in aftershocks and impossible to see locate.
Below, a Google Earth map has been included, which ties into the USGS database. Even looking at this map, it's impossible for the eye to distinguish over 3,500 individual quakes. This further reinforces that certain areas are getting hammered as quake after quake hits the same spots. Looking at the Earthquake List for Map California Nevada, you can see various locations popping up time and again.
One other thing to consider when looking at the Google map is the line in red. This marks a plate boundary which are always busy with quake activity. The North American Plate boundary ties into the San Andreas Fault starting just off-shore of northern California by Point Arena and snakes south before running its course on the east side of the Salton Sea just above Mexico. Both of these factors a major fault and a tectonic plate boundary place massive stress on western California.
The interesting thing to note on this map is the distinct march of quakes northward from the main shake. The greatest number of temblors isn't concentrated right at the heart of the 7.2 quake, but clustered on the border extending into both countries. Hopefully this is as far as they travel and leave San Diego and Los Angeles alone.

Earthquakes Are Increasing It's Not Your Imagination
July 26, 2010 By Holly Deyo
It's not your imagination. More earthquakes than usual have struck so far in 2010 at least this early in the year. Because these events have clustered together in the first seven months, it has magnified the data. Whether this increased trend maintains throughout the year is the big question.
Something unique occurred July 23rd, just three days ago. Three massive earthquakes 7.3, 7.6 and 7.4 struck the Philippines in rapid succession, like seismic gunfire. Numerous other quakes ranging from magnitude 4.4 to 6.5 then hit the same area.
The good news which is probably why this hasn't been reported on at length is that these quakes occurred deeply and just off-shore. Had they erupted near the surface instead of 380 miles deep, we could have seen large tsunamis especially with three events ripping so closely together. All struck within 67 short minutes.
Friday night Art Bell filled in for George Noory on Coast To Coast AM late night talk radio. Bell now makes his primary residence in a Manila highrise and stated he barely felt them.
For those who watch for antipodal (opposite side of the globe) events, these Philippine quakes would place the antipodal location in South America around central Brazil.
Shaking Big, Shaking Early
This is how worldwide earthquakes stack up to date. Not only has a significant amount of quakes occurred, but extraordinary numbers of people have perished in them.
In less than 7 months, yearly averages are already filling up. The largest shaker category Richter 8.0-9.9 has already doubled. Richter 7's are closing in on 100%. Magnitude 6's and 5's are following suit. The number of smaller events is likely attributable to many aftershocks.
Well, the SF Giants just won the World Series tonight here in North Texas, so they won't be going back to SF to play out the series(so much for all the talk how "the big one" would happen in one of the games there, including myself).
However, IMHO, this is one pretty big distraction for the Bay Area, as everyone there is hooting and hollering over their team winning the big one for the first time since 1954. Not trying to predict anything will happen, but don't be surprised in the coming weeks if their little HAARP project pulls the big one right under everyone's noses.

Just a heads up: I just saw that there was a 5.6 Earthquake in Dominican Republic today--Saturday, November 13, 2010! That may cause some jitters for Haiti as well!
