Freighter strikes Dutch ferry
October  22,  2010
Freighter strikes Dutch passenger ferry in a canal near Amsterdam.  The freight ship ran over the ferry. Several passengers are in the water.
Emergency services are trying to pull victims out of the water.
Cargo ship hits small passenger ferry near Amsterdam
A freight ship has hit a small passenger ferry in a canal near Amsterdam, Dutch police say.

They say the ferry's skipper is missing after the incident 10km (six miles) south of Amsterdam.
Reports in Dutch media suggested that some passengers might have been thrown into the water.
The so-called foot ferry - which can carry about 15 people - capsized and is floating upside down. Divers are searching for possible victims.

A helicopter has also been deployed to search the canal with a thermal imager.
So far no-one has been pulled from the water after the collision at about 0700 local time (0500 GMT).

A Dutch police spokeswoman told the BBC that the skipper - believed to be the only person on board the ferry during the incident - was still missing some three hours after the collision.
"We know that the first hour is crucial to rescue someone from the water, so of course we continue looking, but the chances that he is still alive are small, if he (is) in the water," spokeswoman Carine Porgengen said.

Police are also questioning the captain of the freight vessel, which is moored near the scene.
Traffic on the canal has been halted, and a police investigation has been launched.
The canal connects Amsterdam to the Rhine River - a major European shipping artery.

Chemical plant blaze at Moerdijk sparks Dutch alert
January 5, 2011
Southern areas of the Netherlands are on the top state of alert after a blaze at a chemical plant near Rotterdam sent out a thick plume of smoke.
The cloud from the fire at Moerdijk was floating north and had reached the city of Dordrecht, Dutch media said.

Some 400,000 litres of carcinogenic material are stored at the Chemie-Pack plant, De Telegraaf says.
There were no reports of casualties and officials said it was unclear if toxic fumes had been released.

The flames were said to be up to 40m (131ft) high and there were reports of repeated, loud explosions.
Residents in Dordrecht were being warned to keep windows and doors shut.

Sarah Raymond, a BBC News website reader who lives in Dordrecht, said people in the area were frightened as they were unsure about any potential risks to their health.
"It is quite scary. The sky is thick with black smoke and we still don't know if it is toxic or not.

"There is a very unpleasant, chemical smell in the air. I could see the chemical site from my window at work this afternoon across the water and I only live two miles from there.
"But we have not been given any information from the authorities and there is no number to call to find out more. It is frightening."

The Dutch government set up a co-ordination centre for emergency services and southern areas of the province of South Holland were placed on their highest state of alert.
Chemie-Pack, which is about 40km (25 miles) south of the port of Rotterdam, processes and packs products for the chemical industry, the company says on its website.

All 50 Chemie-Pack staff were safe, according to local officials.
A Shell refinery in the Moerdijk industrial zone was not affected by the fire, a spokesman told Reuters news agency.

Prince Johan Friso of the Netherlands remained in critical condition Sunday, two days after he was buried by an avalanche in the Austrian resort of Lech.
“The health condition of his royal majesty Prince Friso remains unchanged,” at the intensive care unit of the Innsbruck University Hospital, the Royal Dutch House said in a statement.
“He is stable, but not out of danger.” The statement added that a prognosis would most likely “not be given before the end of this week.”

How Dutch legalizing of prostitution, drugs, & euthanasia is working out
February 2013
The Netherlands, that once-Calvinist land, has gone farther than just about any other country in legalizing “victimless crimes,” such as prostitution, drug use, and euthanasia.  Now that country is facing the unintended consequences, including an upsurge in organized crime, social squalor, and a  deluge of sex tourists, drug tourists, and death tourists (who only buy a one-way ticket).

From Julie Bindel,  Why even Amsterdam doesn’t want legal brothels » The Spectator:
In 2000 the Dutch government decided to make it even easier for pimps, traffickers and punters by legalising the already massive and highly visible brothel trade. Their logic was as simple as it was deceptive: to make things safer for everyone. Make it a job like any other. Once the women were liberated from the underworld, the crooks, drug dealers and people traffickers would drift away.

Twelve years on, and we can now see the results of this experiment. Rather than afford better protection for the women, it has simply increased the market. Rather than confine the brothels to a discrete (and avoidable) part of the city, the sex industry has spilt out all over Amsterdam — including on-street. Rather than be given rights in the ‘workplace’, the prostitutes have found the pimps are as brutal as ever. The government-funded union set up to protect them has been shunned by the vast majority of prostitutes, who remain too scared to complain.

Pimps, under legalisation, have been reclassified as managers and businessmen. Abuse suffered by the women is now called an ‘occupational hazard’, like a stone dropped on a builder’s toe. Sex tourism has grown faster in Amsterdam than the regular type of tourism: as the city became the brothel of Europe, women have been imported by traffickers from Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia to meet the demand. In other words, the pimps remained but became legit — violence was still prevalent but part of the job, and trafficking increased. Support for the women to leave prostitution became almost nonexistent. The innate murkiness of the job has not been washed away by legal benediction.

4,188 Dutch killed by euthanasia
Sept. 24, 2013
The number of Dutch people killed by medical euthanasia has more than doubled in the last 10 years.
Voluntary euthanasia or physician assisted suicide, where a doctor is present while a patient kills themselves, usually by drinking a strong barbiturate potion, has been legal in the Netherlands since 2002.
Euthanasia carried out by doctors is legal in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Waters Turn Blood Red In Netherlands
Nov 2013
-  Waters have turned red in the Netherlands as shared in this brand new video and news report below. Is this once again a sign of prophecy as shared in the 2nd video below? Though scientists say it is most likely bacteria, our two videographers in separate videos disagree.

Waters Turning Red in Nootdorp – Blue Heron – The Netherlands. This canal in South Holland turned blood red overnight and is a mystery to local authorities. PHOTO’S – http://www.daviddilling.com/fotogalle… The local water department (the Hoogheemraadschap in Dutch) has take samples and is quickly trying to determine what this is. The blue heron (reiger in Dutch) did not seem to mind the waters being red though and was actually calmer then ever when I was filming!

Appears to be a bacteria that should be harmless, but they still warn to stay away from the area until tests are complete

Amsterdam and Schiphol paralyzed by power outage
March 27, 2015
Hospitals, trains, trams and the metro have all been affected by a power outage Friday in Amsterdam and the surrounding area. The electricity network operator, Tennet, said the outage was caused by a grid "overload.” There are traffic jams across the capital as a result of traffic lights turning off. Llarge parts of the province of North Holland, including the nearby broadcasting centre of Hilversum, have been affected. All flights were cancelled at Schiphol international airport and diverted to regional airports.

Power returning to Amsterdam after outage, but transport disrupted
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Lights were coming back on in the Amsterdam region after a power outage on Friday morning that lasted over two hours and caused blackouts across the city, including at its airport, public transport, hospitals and its financial district.

Major delays were expected at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport as a result of the outage, which briefly caused all flights to be suspended, with incoming flights diverted to nearby regional airports until power was restored.
Trains would also be severely delayed all day following the power cut, passenger train operator NS said.
